MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- B.Sc. degree with courses in analytical chemistry, instrumentation required.
- An acceptable equivalent of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum three years directly related experience is required.
- Training and maintenance in operation and maintenance of specialized equipment, including amino acid analyzer, GC, LECO, and ICP is required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Demonstrated ability to conduct sample analysis, train staff and students and maintain lab budgets is required.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as organizational skills, are required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to interact with others in a harmonious and effective manner.
Supervision of Laboratory Users and Administration
- Supervise research personnel while using laboratory equipment in the nutrition lab and in the grinding room and assist with SOP/SWP workflow when needed.
- Coordinate use of equipment when multiple demands are made
- Oversee lab maintenance, ensuring a level of cleanliness as it is required in a laboratory environment
- Coordinate ordering, receipt and storage of lab supplies for the Nutrition Lab, working within provided budgets
- Request service of lab equipment in the nutrition laboratory (if unable to repair) following consultation and approval from the Department Head
- Compile charges for lab analysis on a fee-for-service basis and submit to the Department office staff for billing to individual PI’s.
- Examine internal lab fees annually and make recommendations to the Dept. Head regarding the need for fee increases.
- Coordinate onboarding activities regarding lab safety with the Dept. Admin Office.
- Make recommendations to the Department Head regarding major equipment purchases
Analytical Laboratory Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the amino acid analyzer, including preparation of standards, calibration, as well as calculation and organization of results in a spreadsheet
- Operate and maintain the LECO including calibration as well as organization of results in a spreadsheet
- Receive prepared samples and carry out volatile fatty acid and alkane analysis using gas chromatography. This includes calibration of equipment as well as organization of results in a spreadsheet.
- Operate and perform standard and complex maintenance of equipment in the nutrition laboratory including those used for gross energy, as well as fat and fiber analysis.
- Train students, PDF’s, visiting scientist and technicians to use equipment located in the nutrition lab and the grinding room.
- Miscellaneous lab duties including preparation of buffers, reagents, standards, etc., order gas and other supplies associated with the above-described analyses
- Respond to inquiries from students and staff regarding routine lab problems
Quality Control
- Implementation of standard GLP and quality control protocols for all pieces of equipment in the nutrition lab
- If results do not meet QC standards, determine if re-analysis, re-calibration or service is required.
- Ensure that all students are well versed in these QC requirements through their orientation/training and supervision upon arrival to the Department.
Lab Safety
- Conduct organized safety tours for new graduate and summers students, PDFs, technicians and faculty explaining safety requirements in the laboratory and building
- Ensure staff and students have completed the online WHMIS training through EHSO
- Oversees disposal of biohazardous waste containers by autoclaving and redirecting as is required
- Addresses safety concerns of faculty members, staff and students (e.g. biosecurity and biosafety measures in lab spaces, type of training needed to perform activities in and out of lab spaces at the department, etc.)
- Oversees first aid kit and safety station supplies in the nutrition lab.
- Conducts routine lab safety inspections and participate in annual safety inspections with EHSO
- Ensure personnel adhere to the most recent lab safety protocols and follow up to ensure compliance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Some evenings and weekends may be required.
