Neecheewam Inc. is looking for a Community Mental Health Specialist that has the capacity to live and work by the values and philosophies of the Agency and contribute to the overall success of the organization. This position reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for providing support to individuals and groups.
The Mental Health Specialist will assume a leadership role in assessment, treatment planning, staff education, crisis management, and documentation. The Community Mental Health Specialist` demonstrates a commitment to holistic practice that focuses on trauma-informed care and increasing competencies

Responsibilities/ Duties:
Administrative
· Maintain and update documentation and client files as required (i.e. assessments, case notes, incident reports, care plans, etc.)
· Collect and report statistical data as required for evaluation and reporting purposes
· Attend meetings as required
Assessment
· Complete initial and ongoing assessments/learning and listening tools
· Assess residents’ needs, situations, and strengths to determine goals
· Develop plans to improve residents’ well-being
· Use a wide range of assessment/learning and listening tools to engage residents
· Monitor residents’ goals and outcomes through ongoing assessment and documentation of progress
Treatment and Planning
· In collaboration with clinical team develop youth care plans that incorporate recommendations, observations and feedback from youth, staff, and their supports
· Provide feedback in collaboration with multidisciplinary team around program referrals, intakes, participant dynamics, discharges, and follow-up plans
· Attend resident specific meetings with clinical team and outside collaterals as required (i.e. intake, discharge, transitional planning, etc.)
· Attend team meetings and case consults to ensure information is shared within team
· Participate in treatment planning with other team members as required
· Engage residents to take an active role in their own healing
Clinical
· Initiates and provides a variety of healing tools (“therapies”)
· Use evidence-based, strengths-based, trauma, resilience and culturally informed holistic, youth and family-centered practices
· Provide individual and group therapy as required
· Provide ongoing case management and support to current and past residents
· Work directly with youth and families, provide mentoring, guidance, and support (mentally, physically, emotionally, and spiritually)
· Build trusting relationships with participants and staff in a non-judgmental and non-threatening way
· Engage participants to take an active role in their own healing
· Work alongside residents to help identify areas of interest, strengths, and needs
· Work alongside participants to identify and work towards goals (SMART goals)
· Complete weekly check-ins with residents to update progress
· Work alongside residents to develop coping strategies and safety plans
· Facilitate groups for past and present participants (combination of therapeutic and recreational activities)
· Be available on call in emergency situations and respond to crisis situations as required
Leadership and Education
· Provide consultation and clinical oversight to staff regarding specific therapeutic services
· Provide guidance and direction to staff to ensure all aspects of treatment and planning are child-centered and trauma-informed
· Provide ongoing education to staff around assessment tools and clinical practices
· Participate in mental health program planning and development within the team
· Promote and contribute to a nurturing, safe, therapeutic environment direct involvement with participants and staff
· Initiate, direct, and/or coordinate programming and activities in collaboration with multidisciplinary clinical team
· Promote awareness around program and service model through community presentations and activities
· Develop and maintain up-to-date knowledge on mental health and addictions supports/services throughout the Province of Manitoba, along with the development of close working relationships with these resources and service providers
· Deliver education as determined by program priorities around mental health, addictions, coping skills, healthy relationships, life skills, etc. (i.e. therapeutic groups, staff education, and individual counselling)
· Ability to liaise with community agencies regarding issues relevant to client needs and identify and develop partnerships in the community
· Promotes positive working relationships with various systems and collaterals including government and non organizations
· Support community engagement activities
· Provide follow-up and transitional services to past participants (required to travel within city limits and rural Manitoba)
Training and Development Delivery
Design and facilitate interactive, evidence-based training sessions for program management staff.
Develop curriculum and training materials aligned with clinical best practices, organizational goals, and licensing requirements.
Deliver training across various formats including in-person, virtual, and hybrid sessions.
Establishes and implements an annual training plan for professional development to maintain evidence-informed clinical skills.
Maintain detailed records of training attendance and evaluations.
Partner with leadership, HR Manager, and collaterals to assess training needs.
Other Functions
· Maintain open communication lines with program managers, staff, cultural team, human resource management to establish close working relationships
· Follow procedures and routines related to health and safety of staff and residents in conjunction with Neecheewam Workplace Health and Safety Advisory group/committee
· Maintains knowledge and understanding of current Mental Health legislation and Privacy legislation
· Continually upgrade skills and expertise relative to the job task and to the field
· Available to work flexible hours to respond to crisis as required
· Performance of other duties at the request of the Executive Director, the Board of Directors, and collateral agencies as requested
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
· Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in a Social Science, plus a minimum of 5 years of supervised experience in a counselling environment OR
· Preferred Education of Master’s Level Degree in a Social Science, plus a minimum of 4 years of supervised experience in a counselling environment OR
· A combination of education in the social sciences (such as psychology, social work, or a related field) and a minimum of 20 years of extensive practical counselling experience would be taken into consideration.
· Additional training and/or experience in any/all the following would be considered an asset: Dialectal Behavioral Therapy (DBT). Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Addictions, EMDR, Group therapy, Family Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
· Knowledge and experience working with people with complex trauma and cooccurring mental health and addictions issues
· Strong counselling skills and experience working with high-risk or vulnerable populations
· Strong working knowledge of harm reduction principals and legislation related to youth, addictions, and mental health
· Knowledge and experience around working with sexually exploited youth, including common vulnerabilities, resources, and legislation around child sexual exploitation
· Ability to work flexibly, including some “out of hours” work
· Knowledge of the Personal Health Information Act, The Mental Health Act, The Child and Family Services Act, and other relevant legislation
