Plant Growth Technician - Tech 2 (AESES)

35 Hours/week (Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm)
Salary:
$20.56 to $29.44 per hour ($37,419.20 to $53,580.80 per annum)

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:
- Successful completion of high school plus two years of directly-related experience is required.
- Some post-secondary education or programs relating to Botany, Plant Science, and/or Horticulture or greenhouse operations is preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrated effectiveness in two years directly-related experience in greenhouse/growth-chamber or horticultural operations.
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to communicate effectively in written, email and oral form with faculty members, students and staff is required.
- Demonstrated understanding of social media formats is required.
- Ability to provide leadership and guidance to volunteers is required.
- Demonstrated aptitude for mechanical repairs and general equipment maintenance is required.
- Proven organizational and scheduling skills required.
- Basic skills in computer use and operation for product searches required.
- Timely correspondence by e-mail and effective document processing using Microsoft Office is required.
- Ability to successfully grow, cultivate, and maintain a wide variety of plant life, and to competently use related equipment is required.
- Ability to learn to employ new equipment as needed is required.
- Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certified or willing to obtain certification in integrated pest management (IPM) protocols.
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 15 kg with ease.
Plant Care
- Prepares, grows, nurtures and maintains a wide variety of plants as required for teaching and research purposes
- Ensures the quality of the plants that are grown in the facilities are in accordance with the specifications of the end user
- Maintains a schedule for watering, fertilizing, and pruning using growth chambers and cultivating facilities
- Applies integrated pest management (IPM) protocols to plant care
Teaching Preparation
- Schedules and produces material to ensure availability for courses taught in Biological Sciences
- Coordinates with Biology Technicians, the services required for delivery of laboratories in BIOL 1020, 1030, 2240, 2242, 3400, 3452 and 3550 and other courses.
Facility and Equipment Maintenance
- Cleans facilities on a regular basis, maintaining a tidy and organized work space.
- Cleans and conducts regular maintenance on facility equipment to maintain continuous operation.
- Advises supervisor if equipment is being used improperly or if external users are not maintaining their assigned work areas.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
Communication and Facility Use Organization
- Updates Greenhouse information using various media formats
- Organizes and monitors volunteers and public use of the facility as needed
- Trains volunteers in tasks related to greenhouses and plants
