BACKGROUND:
SCO is a growing and dynamic regional First Nation organization that represents 33 Anishinaabe and Dakota Nations and more than 92,000 citizens in what is now southern Manitoba. Established in 1999 by the Chiefs, SCO is mandated as an independent organization to protect, preserve, promote, and enhance First Nation peoples’ inherent rights, languages, customs, and traditions through the application and implementation of the spirit and intent of the Treaty-making process.
OVERVIEW:
Reporting to the Mental Health and Wellness Program Lead, the MCRT Members work to support southern First Nation citizens and communities by focusing on crisis intervention and mental health and addiction navigation while benefiting from southern Knowledge Keepers, Elders, and culturally appropriate mental health and wellness service providers. As qualified, trauma informed professionals, they will be trained for rapid response and case coordination services to ensure clients have after care plans and ongoing support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Crisis intervention, triage services, and increased capacity for emergency responses to crises
· Community-specific trauma-informed mental health supports to community crisis events, addressing complex and evolving challenges
· Mental Health First Aid screening and assessment to match individuals in crisis to the appropriate level of treatment and support
· Individual client assessments such as suicide assessment and safety plan, self-esteem and depression scale and mental health status
· Short term one-on-one counselling and referrals to therapy/counselling resources
· Drug and alcohol addiction support triaging using a harm reduction approach
· Grief and loss support
· Domestic and family violence support and triaging
· Post-suicide response/aftercare
· Referrals to traditional and clinical support services
· Alternative services including referrals to traditional ceremonies and land-based teachings
· Safe talk and sharing circles
· Prevention training/Facilitation
· Relaying all necessary information to MHW Program Lead and MCRT Case Navigator
· Critical incident stress debriefing, case management, and completion of case notes and reports
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
· A degree in a mental health related field and regulated profession such as counselling, social work, therapy, psychology, or psychiatric nursing. Training in Mental Health First Aid for First Nations is an asset
· Two (2) years of experience providing crisis mental health services
· Experience working with southern First Nations and Tribal Councils and their health teams
· Good knowledge of Federal, Provincial and First Nation health care systems including First Nation and Inuit Health Branch, Nursing Stations, and Telehealth technology
· Knowledge of Personal Health Information Act and ability to maintain confidentiality when developing and handling sensitive information
· Team player with a “families first” approach who can work productively and collaboratively with a variety of people within complex systems
· Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to write clear, concise documents and reports with a high degree of accuracy and for a variety of audiences
· Ability to manage competing deadlines, work independently, and handle confidential or sensitive information appropriately and in an organized fashion
· Proficiency in the use of computers and MS Office Suite (Forms, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
· Ability to speak Anishinaabe or Dakota languages is considered an asset
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
· Must provide a current and satisfactory criminal record check with vulnerable sector search, and current and clear Child and Adult Abuse Registry checks
· Must have a valid class 5 MB driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle as travel will be required
· Must have flexibility for occasional evening, weekend, or overnight meetings or support
· Must be available for on-call outside standard office hours on a rotational basis
· If the employee is a member of a registered profession, they must be a member in good standing with their regulatory body
WAGE RANGE: $60,000 - $75,000 Annually
