Afrocentric Parenting Journey Home Visitor

Position title

Parenting Journey Coordinator

Executive Director

Parenting Journey is a home visitation program that provides support for African

Nova Scotian families experiencing complex social, emotional, and familial

challenges that may impact overall family functioning, parent-child relationships

and the well-being and development of children and youth. The Parenting

Journey Home Visitor performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the

organization’s Parenting Journey program within the defined catchment area.

The Parenting Journey Home Visitor plans and facilitates both home-based and

community-based programs and services.

The Program recognizes that the well-being and development of children, youth

and their families are influenced by the varied systems of their environment and

the interrelationships between these systems.

The Program uses a holistic approach which addresses the interconnections

between child, parent, family, and community. The key areas of intervention of

the Program focus on the enhancement of promotive and protective factors and

the reduction of and / or mitigation of risk factors that impact children, youth,

and families. Programming addresses the following areas of focus:

Child & youth development, safety & well-being.

Family Support

Community connectedness, linkages, and referrals

Position summary

The Parenting Journey Coordinator is responsible for the implementation,

management, and evaluation of the organization’s Parenting Journey program

within the defined catchment area. The Community Home Visitor plans and

facilitates both home-based and community based programs and services. The

main focus of the work is the provision of a home visiting program for parents

with children and youth from ages 0-18 who identify as wanting such support.

Recognizing that families need community supports as well, staff offer a number

of programs within their respective communities. These programs may include

Parenting Programs, and/or other programs deemed to be suitable for

participants. Referrals to other available programs and services are a key part of

this program. The work also includes administrative duties relating to daily

operations of the organization as well as program promotion work. As a member

of a tri-county staff team the Parenting Journey Coordinator participates in

county and tri-county staff relationships, problem solving and on-going center

based facility management. He/she works within the guidelines, policies and

mission of the organization and will be accountable and responsible for specific

projects as assigned.

Duties and responsibilities

1. Community Home Visiting

Develops trusting relationships with families
Provides information about community resources and activities, early childhood development, adolescent development, child care options, parenting and other related topics
Helps parents to access required or desired resources within their communities
Encourages and supports parents to become more self sufficient
Accompanies families to medical and other appointments, as necessary
Promotes good problem solving skills and coping techniques within families
Responds to parenting questions and concerns
Helps families access appropriate prenatal and postnatal care
Assists families to create home environments that encourage healthy child development by planning and demonstrating interactive activities
Consults with the appropriate supervisor and in his/her absence the Executive Director regarding situations that require more intensive support

2. Programming and Program Related

Participates in implementing program activities such as parent; parent - child; and child/youth focused programs and services
Arranges for use of required facilities and spaces ensuring that set up is arranged and clean up occurs after program completion
Ensures that material and equipment required for successful programming has been requested or is available and ready for use
Incorporates and applies community development principles ensuring that participants or potential participants have a voice in program planning and implementation
Arranges for transportation and child care supports, as applicable
Prepares snack using safe food handling techniques
Participates in evaluation of programs/services

3. Program Promotion and Referral

Provides monthly program schedule to staff who are responsible for the preparation of county-based monthly calendar of events and activities
Responds to incoming referrals and makes appropriate outgoing referrals
Supports the inclusion of volunteers and student placements
Responsible for the implementation, management, supervision and evaluation of all activities related to their program
Responsible for the expansion of the programs forming partnerships where appropriate
Responsible for remaining up to date on trends and best practices for working with families

4. Professional Development

Participates in professional development opportunities as requested by self (with approval) or management
May attend community committee meetings, working group meetings or other community based meetings or consultations with the approval of the Executive Director

5. Administration

Ensuring that appropriate records and statistics are kept for all programs under their direction
Ensuring that proper and accurate financial records are kept for the Regional Financial Administrator
Acquiring necessary materials and equipment for all programs under their direction
Ongoing monitoring and reporting for the local account of their County
Managing program purchases within the budget for their program
Responsible for the spending and accounting for all petty cash within their control
Maintains and submits accurate records and statistics such as mileage, expense claims, program admission forms, and other documentation/databases as necessary.
Adheres and remains familiar with the policies and procedures and the occupational health and safety requirements of the organization
Submits fully completed monthly staff reports and bi-weekly time sheets
Answers and responds to telephone calls, as required
Manages own correspondence, including maintaining an appropriate filing system for own work related documents.
Shares in the upkeep of common office areas and ensures that own office area is maintained in an orderly and safe fashion

6. Evaluation

Ensures that program level evaluations are conducted on during the last session of each program or once annually for the ongoing play group type programs
Ensures that program level evaluations are collected and submitted as a regular attachment to their monthly staff reports
Works with the Executive Director and other Program Coordinators to meet the evaluation requirements of the organization and/or specific funding bodies

7. Community Development

Promote and ongoing fostering of good strong community partnerships in accordance to the policy of Kids First Association.
Promotion of programs to service providers and the community and act as
a liaison with social agencies as required/needed
Involvement on local committees as assigned by the Executive Director

8. Other

Promotion of Kids First
Adhering to the mandate, mission statement, policies, and procedures of
Kids First Association.
Promotion and adhering to the guiding principles of the Parenting Journey Program
Responsible for maintaining good working relationships and communication among all staff associated with the organization
Respecting the participants who use the centre and ongoing collaboration and consultation with the families to ensure Kids First is continuing to meet the needs of the community.

Qualifications

1. Education and Experience

· Post Secondary degree or diploma or demonstrated extensive experience

in working with families

· Previous experience working with or connecting with families and/or

young children

· Previous experience working with or connecting with families with young

adolescents

· Some knowledge of government and community-based programs and

services that relate to the intended population’s needs

· A willingness to become certified in safe food handling, WHMIS,

Emergency First Aid and Infant/Child CPR

2. Skills and Abilities

General Description

The Parenting Journey is a home visitation program that provides support for

families experiencing complex social, emotional and familial challenges.

Parenting Journey Home Visitors work collaboratively with families to build

meaningful helping relationships while collectively identifying strengths,

resources, challenges and priorities, using a holistic framework.

The Parenting Journey Home Visitor will provide support to families and their

children age 0 to 16 years in the following areas:

1. child/youth growth and development

2. parent-child relationships

3. parenting knowledge and skills

4. family life management

5. community connections and referrals

Specific duties include:

1. Working with families to determine families’ strengths, resources, areas

for development, priorities and needs.

2. Developing goals with families using a formal goal-setting process

3. Developing and implementing individualized family plans in a

collaborative manner with families that outline goals, strategies, roles and

responsibilities and timelines

4. Making referrals for families to other formal/informal supports and

services

5. Participating in regular, weekly supervision and informal debriefs

6. Participating in case conferencing that includes families and other service

providers

7. Participating in ongoing training and professional development
