Working for the Faculty of Law

The Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta invites applications for up to three tenure-stream appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin July 1, 2025. The Faculty will also consider applications for appointment at a higher rank from established scholars who can bring a significant and ongoing research program to the Faculty.

The Faculty welcomes applications from exceptional scholars with diverse perspectives and backgrounds, but is especially interested in applicants whose academic interests focus on private law, particularly family law, commercial law, and securities law, as well as health law. Applicants who can contribute to the Law School's growing reputation in Indigenous Law are also encouraged to apply.

Founded in 1912 the Faculty of Law is the oldest law school in Western Canada. It is situated on the North Campus of the University of Alberta, centrally located in Alberta's capital city, a metropolitan center of 1.3 million people. Members of the Faculty of Law are recognized nationally and internationally as leading scholars and teachers, and lead by example in their service to the university, legal and civic communities. The Faculty enrolls approximately 525 JD students and operates a robust graduate program. The Faculty is committed to providing its students with a rich legal education, including diverse experiential learning opportunities, an outstanding mooting program, and an extensive compulsory and optional Indigenous law curriculum. The Faculty also has strong connections to the profession and a committed alumni community.

The Faculty of Law has strengths in a number of fields, including health law, environmental law, constitutional law, and community-led research in Indigenous Law revitalization, as well as a long tradition of interdisciplinary research. The Faculty is also home to five research groups that contribute research, ideas, innovation and policy expertise to important areas of public concern: the Health Law Institute, the Centre for Constitutional Studies, the Alberta Law Reform Institute, the Environmental Law Centre, and the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge, which upholds Indigenous Law and governance through community directed research and learning.

Contribute to the collegiality of the Faculty.

Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for excellence in scholarly research and teaching, and possess a substantial record of academic achievement.

A JD/LLB or equivalent and a doctorate in law or cognate discipline, completed or in progress is required. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in exceptional circumstances.

Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
