Position Summary:
The Sewer and Water Construction Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive estimates for sewer, water, earthworks and other infrastructure projects. This role requires a thorough understanding of construction processes, materials, and industry standards. The ideal candidate will have strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with project teams to ensure successful project bids.
Key Responsibilities:
· Estimate Preparation: Develop detailed cost estimates for sewer and water construction, earthworks and road building (including concrete curb and flatworks) projects, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs. Ensure accuracy and completeness of all estimates.
· Scope Review: Analyze project plans, specifications, and other documentation to identify project requirements and scope of work. Conduct site visits as needed to assess project conditions and gather relevant information.
· Quantity Takeoff: Perform accurate quantity takeoffs of materials and labour required for each project. Utilize industry-standard software and tools to streamline the takeoff process.
· Pricing: Research and analyze current market prices for materials, labor, and equipment. Maintain a database of unit prices and cost information to support accurate and competitive estimates.
· Risk Assessment: Identify potential risks and challenges associated with each project. Develop strategies to mitigate risks and ensure that estimates account for all possible contingencies.
· Bid Coordination: Collaborate with operations manager, president, project managers, engineers, and other team members to develop comprehensive bid packages. Prepare and submit bids in a timely manner, ensuring compliance with client requirements and deadlines.
· Subcontractor Management: Solicit and evaluate bids from subcontractors and suppliers. Negotiate pricing and terms to ensure competitive and fair agreements.
· Client Interaction: Communicate effectively with bid and tender issuers and clients to clarify project requirements and address any questions or concerns. Present estimates and proposals to clients in a clear and professional manner.
· Project Handoff: Provide detailed handoff documentation to project managers and finance upon award of contracts. Ensure that all estimate information is accurately transferred to support project planning and execution.
· Project Management: As capacity allows, contribute to the project management of current work.
Requirements:
· Civil Engineering or Construction Management Degree or Diploma.
· 3 - 5 years of heavy civil construction estimating experience, preferably within the sewer and water infrastructure sector, with other earthworks, road construction and curb, sidewalk and asphalt experience an asset.
· Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and industry standards related to sewer and water projects.
· Proficiency in estimating software and tools, such as Bluebeam, HeavyBid, B2W or similar programs.
· Excellent analytical and mathematical skills, with a high level of attention to detail.
· Detail oriented, and able to multi-task under the pressure of deadlines.
· Able to conduct technical communications in English with internal and external parties, both written and verbal.
· A passion for construction.
· Effective time management and organizational skills.
· Proven ability to work independently and within a team environment.
· Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as needed.
· Must be legally eligible to work in Canada – no work permit sponsorship is available for this position.
