Compensation: $53,000 -$55,000 annual salary. 15 days paid holiday during the annual year-end closure. Health Benefits Package.
Hours of work: Permanent, full-time. 40 hours per week. May include some holidays, evenings and weekends. Flexible remote work option available.
The Cranbrook Archives, Museum and Society (CAMAL) operates the Cranbrook History Centre,Fort Steele Heritage Town under contract to the Province of BC, and advocates for heritage and culture in the East Kootenay Region.
Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Programs and Education to lead our educational initiatives and drive the strategic vision of our organization. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in education management, with a focus on business development, process improvement, and project management. This role requires exceptional leadership skills and passion for sharing stories and building relationships. The Director will be responsible for researching, developing, and promoting school programming and life-long learning programs and events for the Cranbrook History Centre, Fort Steele Heritage Town and the East Kootenay community.
The Director is part of the growing Executive Team who oversees the internal controls of the Society. This position assists in the development and monitoring of multi-year strategic plans, annual business plans and budgets in collaboration with the staff at each site and the Executive Team.
Position Duties and Responsibilities
- Implement a variety of learning strategies to engage diverse audiences at a meaningful level.
- Develop (and deliver as necessary) school and public programmes – general, curriculum-based, outreach, children/youth, adult/senior, special events, tours, both on and off-site.
- Develop performance evaluations for all program and event activities. Regularly evaluate and report on performance to ensure goals and objectives are being achieved.
- Assist with developing marketing materials and public communication strategies as related to programs and events.
- Oversee program bookings and scheduling.
- Manage operating budget as related to program, event, and education activities.
- In collaboration with site supervisors, train and manage staff, contractors, and volunteers to deliver programming and events, including seasonal part-time staff. This includes writing and managing wage subsidy applications as needed.
- Build events mandate and structure in collaboration with site supervisors.
Knowledge and Experience
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in a relevant field AND/OR a combination of education and experience in developing and managing public programming.
- An understanding of Indigenous relations in this region; additionally, familiarity with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the relevant Calls to Action for Museums is an asset. This knowledge can be through education, lived or worked experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years experience in program development and delivery, ideally in a non-profit/museum setting. Knowledge of virtual programming an asset.
- Knowledge of the BC Curriculum and historical inquiry.
- Experience activating the Principles of Interpretation an asset.
- Experience with event management an asset.
Abilities and Skills
- Experience working with children and understanding of learner diversity.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills marked by professionalism, teamwork, and courtesy.
- Advanced computer skills, in particular knowledge of Microsoft 365, Jotform and WordPress.
- A leader with proven supervisory and leadership skills.
- Experience with grant writing, management, and reporting.
- Ability to work independently without day-to-day supervision while still collaborating in a small team environment.
- Ability to interact and communicate with large groups of people from a variety of backgrounds and educational levels and explain concepts to a variety of audiences.
- Ability to work to a budget, ideally additional experience in developing budgets for programs.
