Duties
- Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including vital signs, physical examinations, and medical history documentation using electronic health record (EHR) systems such as Epic or Cerner.
- Administer medications and injections accurately following prescribed protocols, including IV infusions and medication management for pain, sedation, or other therapeutic needs.
- Assist with complex procedures such as catheterizations, wound suturing, tube feeding, and sterile specimen collection while maintaining aseptic technique.
- Monitor patients’ responses to treatments like ventilator management, oxygen therapy, or cardiac catheterization procedures; escalate concerns promptly.
- Collaborate with physicians and specialists in acute care environments such as ICU, emergency room, or Level I Trauma Center to coordinate patient care plans.
- Document all patient interactions thoroughly in compliance with HIPAA regulations and medical documentation standards like ICD-10/ICD-9 coding.
- Support discharge planning and case management efforts to ensure smooth transitions between inpatient, outpatient, home care, or long-term care settings.
Skills
- Proven experience working in diverse healthcare environments including hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospice care, or outpatient clinics.
- Strong knowledge of physiology, anatomy, medical terminology, and diagnostic evaluation techniques.
- Skilled in patient assessment techniques such as vital signs measurement, physical examinations, venipuncture (blood draws), and IV insertion.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems like Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth or eClinicalWorks for accurate medical documentation and record keeping.
- Expertise in medication administration including injections and IV infusion therapy; capable of managing acute pain and complex medication regimens.
- Experience with specialized care areas such as dementia/memory care (Alzheimer’s), pediatric (neonatal ventilator), behavioral health, infectious disease management or trauma centers.
- Ability to work effectively with individuals with disabilities or developmental challenges; experience in home & community care is a plus.
- Knowledge of infection control protocols and sterile processing techniques to maintain a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Excellent communication skills for triage assessments in urgent care or emergency medicine settings; capable of working under pressure in fast-paced environments like the ER or ICU.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required; additional certifications such as ACLS or PALS are advantageous for advanced practice settings.
