Job Title: Refrigeration B Operator/3rd Class Operating Engineer
Reports to: Chief Engineer
Environment: Freezer and Cooler
Salary: $42.25/hr
Job Type: Union role, Part-Time, 16 hours per week
Shifts: 6:30am -2:30pm, Saturdays and Sunday, opportunities to provide coverage for additional shifts and vacation relief.
Shifts: Anticipated vacancy - immediate hire. The current incumbent's retirement is imminent. The successful candidate must be hired as soon as possible to begin training.
Position Summary:
Safely operate ammonia refrigeration plants, monitor temperatures, pressures and conditions to ensure adequate refrigeration for product storage. Perform minor repairs in ammonia plant and facility. Monitor Life Safety systems.
Responsibilities:
The responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Safely operate ammonia plant as per TSSA regulations.
- Monitor Life safety systems.
- Responsible for attending preventative maintenance schedules for: air compressors and driers; ammonia compressors; refrigerant pumps; condensers; air units; evaporators; and fans.
- Check and inspect condensers, evaporators, and fans.
- Maintain water treatment levels to prevent corrosion to the wet side of equipment.
- Perform minor repairs.
- Check the rooftop HVAC units for proper heating or cooling as required. Replace HVAC rooftop filters and fresh air units. Clean HVAC unit condensers and ammonia condenser tanks.
- Monitor the operation of ammonia condensers and water softeners.
- Perform basic facility maintenance as directed by Chief Engineer.
- Perform basic PM routines for Ammonia plant and facility.
- Follow all relevant departmental policies, processes, standard operating procedures and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner.
Required Skills/Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years in an Ammonia Operator or Shift Engineer role, preferably within a warehouse environment.
- Working knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), WHMIS;
- Working knowledge of food plant regulatory standards (CFIA, etc.), GMP, HACCP, BRC, food safety, food quality, etc. is an asset.
- Basic electrical/mechanical skills for maintenance.
- Analytical, with problem-identification and problem-solving capabilities.
- Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Effective communication skills to deal with associates and or tenants.
Academic/Education Requirements:
- Certified Refrigeration B or A certificate or 3rd Class Operating Engineer
- Refrigeration Mechanic or Millwright certificate is an asset.
Work Environment:
Frequently exposed to cold conditions, loud noises. Lifting up to 25lbs. The warehouse temperature is +2 Celsius Cooler & -18 Celsius Freezer.
