Mountainside Animal Hospital + 24 Hour Emergency is looking to grow our talented Veterinary Assistant team!

Under new management and leadership with our amazing Medical Director, Dr. Harry Cozens, and inspiring Hospital Director, Robyn Luscombe, Mountainside Animal Hospital and 24 Hour Emergency is continuing to grow and change.

The Position: We are searching for a full-time experienced Veterinary Assistant who is up for the fast paced and exiting challenge of emergency work to join our team. The position schedule is on a rotational basis, including weekends and overnights meaning your job is always changing and you never know what will come through the door! Must have previous veterinary industry experience (completion of a certified VOA program is preferred).

POSITION SUMMARY

The Veterinary Assistant provides support to the Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians by assisting during exams, treatment, surgery and boarding of hospitalized patients. The incumbent helps with general patient care and treatment including animal restraint, monitoring patients, preparing for surgical procedures, performing routine in-house laboratory work, and general housekeeping. Communicates with and educates clients by providing basic information, prepares prescriptions as prescribed by Veterinarians and assists the Receptionists, as required.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Interacts directly with clients, ensuring that they have a positive experience and keeping them well informed of all aspects related to their pets by:

Demonstrating warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all communications with clients.
Assisting with admitting and discharging patients by checking them in/out using the hospital’s veterinary information management software (i.e., ezyVet).
Assisting Receptionist with booking patients and answering telephone/email, and covering for breaks, as required.
Greeting clients and patients and escorting them into the exam room, and obtaining basic information from the patient (e.g., weight, temperature, etc.).
Reviewing medical records and notes made by the admitting receptionist, and discussing any symptoms or problems being experienced, to discern the nature of the visit in order to advise the Veterinarian before exam.
Discussing medical status of their pets and providing accurate information concerning fees, hospital policies and procedures, etc.
Educating clients regarding preventative measures and vaccination requirements.
Escorting clients and patients to the front desk and giving medical records to the receptionist for client invoicing.
Ensuring that all procedures rendered during the visit are documented for proper billing.
Promoting the hospital’s products, programs and services and making suggestions/recommendations to clients about products appropriate for their pet’s condition.

II. Provides direct support to Registered Veterinary Technicians and Veterinarians by:

Restraining animals in a safe, efficient and compassionate manner during examinations and procedures, preparing any forms needed, or obtaining instruments and/or supplies.
Assisting Veterinarians with examinations and facilitating the flow of clients and patients through the out-patient clinic, following established policies and procedures.
Consulting with Veterinarians and Technicians on a daily basis to plan each day’s activities.
Keeping Veterinarians apprised of potential problems, discussions with clients, etc.
Obtaining laboratory samples from clients/patients and making sure that laboratory work is performed by another team member while the patient is still in the exam room.
Notifying Veterinarian when patients in the exam room are ready to be seen and advising on known information (e.g., nature of visit, preventative procedures due, etc.).
Performing routine medical tasks such as nail trims, ear cleaning, suture removal, weight checks, supervised bandage and splint application, injections as directed by the Veterinarian (e.g., intravenous, intramuscular, subcutaneous).
Taking, developing and maintains radiographs following proper safety procedures.
Preparing any medications (including creating labels and accurately dispensing drugs) or vaccines, as request by the Veterinarian.
Documenting controlled drug logs and following appropriate safety guidelines regarding hazardous materials, radiographs, controlled drugs, animal handling, etc.
Preparing specimens and performing basic in-house laboratory tests.
Monitoring hospitalized or Shelter animals and noting and reporting any changes in status to Technicians or Veterinarians.
Assisting with feeding, bathing, and exercising hospitalized or Shelter animals, as required.
Restocking and monitoring laboratory and general hospital supplies on an ongoing basis.
Assisting other team members, as requested.

III. Ensures the ongoing cleanliness and organization of the hospital by:

Cleaning, sanitizing, and straightening the exam rooms, treatment and lab areas, and public areas of the practice, as needed.
Cleaning up patients’ messes and other related cleaning tasks, as required.
Unpacking inventory deliveries and reconciling against packing slip and restock supplies. Re-stocking merchandise area, exam rooms and surgery suites.
Assists with laundry, dishes, food prep, and sanitization of cages, medical instruments and equipment, and other cleaning tasks.

IV. Ensures the ongoing safety of own self, other staff members and clients by:

Adhering to mandated workplace safety policies at all times.
Following strict protocols pertaining to the safe handling of companion animals as well as veterinary-related dangerous substances (e.g., chemicals, gases, solutions, biohazards, etc.).

V. Performs other duties as assigned
