Raise is hiring an Instrumentation Control System Engineer for Our Client, a Canadian multinational energy transportation company with a focus on the transportation, distribution, and generation of energy. This position is a one (1)-year contract located in Edmonton, Alberta. We are actively seeking talented professionals like you to drive these crucial initiatives forward.

Description

The Instrumentation Control System Engineer will provide design, implementation and support services for process control, networking, and data communication systems used in Liquids Pipeline system. Provide input for defining and implementing strategies regarding system operations

Role Accountabilities:

At a high level the role will involve provision of process controls services on liquids pipelines mainly in support of projects and operations.
Design, implement, administer and maintain process control, networking, and data communication systems required for the liquids pipeline system. This includes configuration, programing, and commissioning of control system PLCs and HMIs as required.
Directly manage or assist with the implementation of capital projects related to process control or data communication systems.
Provide technical support for the ongoing operation of installed systems in the areas of process control and data communication system technologies. This includes recommending solutions to operational issues and resolving problem reports.
Supply engineering services to project managers for capital projects with process control or data communication related components.
Provide on-call support for process control, networking, and data communication systems used in operations.
Participate in failure analyses and investigations related to the process control and related systems used in operations.
Participate in the development of new process control and automation standards, specifications, practices, and procedures, or updating of existing. Development of these documents will frequently require coordination with a variety of internal stakeholders including Canadian engineering and operating groups, and our counterpart control systems experts within PCSLD.
Support the ongoing maintenance of the control system asset and program inventories
Identify opportunities for further enhancements to the company control system through on-going R&D, control system commissioning support and lessons learned analyses.
Lead or assist with capital budget submissions directed at maintaining and advancing process control and data communication systems and enhancing the Department’s services related to these areas. This includes preparing cost estimates, execution strategies and business case justifications for the submissions.
Represent the department on selected internal technical and review committees.
Establish working relationships with a cross-section of stakeholders within the company, equipment manufacturers, vendors, and services providers.

Contacts (Working Relationships):

Project teams including but not limited to Project Managers, Project Engineers, Design Consultants, Commissioning Coordinators – provision of controls technical guidance and services in support of projects.
Operations personnel including but not limited to Control Center Operations, Regional Operations, Regional Maintenance – provision of controls technical guidance and services in support of projects, operations, and strategic endeavors.
Other technical teams including but not limited to Instrumentation, US Controls Team, Operations Engineering, Measurement, IT, SCADA, Leak Detection, Standards – provision of controls technical guidance and services in support of projects, operations, and strategic endeavors.
External shipper contacts – provision of shipper signal data.
Integration Consultants – provision of technical guidance and quality assurance for applications and services

Qualifications:

Completion of an Engineering Degree or Technology Diploma related to Process Control, Chemical, Electrical, or Computer Engineering, from an accredited university or college.
Working level of knowledge and understanding of PLC hardware, PLC programming and related programmable devices in general.
Possess a basic understanding of communications systems and an appreciation for the responsibilities in the other technology areas commonly applied in pipeline operations.
Ability to consistently solve technical problems as they arise and make decisions on how a problem’s solution will impact the immediate problem and the system as a whole.
Proven ability to regularly shift between planned and unplanned activities, while remaining effective despite the resulting disruptive effects.
Proven capability to prioritize and manage multiple assignments and meet established deadlines while managing stakeholder expectations.
Ability to effectively interact with peers, internal stakeholders, vendors and service providers.
Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form. This includes the ability to effectively interact with peers, internal stakeholders and equipment vendors. Strong written communications abilities, including good spelling and grammar are essential for this position.

Preferred Qualifications:

4 or more years progressive control systems engineering experience.
Proficiency in control system related practices, standards, specifications, and codes.
A substantial level of experience with the Schneider Modicon PLC platform.
Familiarity with other PLC platforms, such as Pockwell, would be a differentiating qualification for the applicant.
Working knowledge and understanding of HMI hardware, HMI programming. AVEVA Edge, Wonderware, Proface, & PanelView preferred.
Fundamental knowledge of the oil and gas industry with a preference to pipeline experience.
Fundamental knowledge of related areas such as power, control elements, instrumentation, pipeline hydraulics, IT, Networks, OT Cybersecurity and SCADA.

Additional Information:

Hold a valid driver’s license
Eligible to hold a valid passport and ability to travel to the USA
Travel to regional offices, equipment installations or construction sites across the Liquids Pipeline system facilities in Canada, with the occasional requirement to travel to the U.S. (Up to 20% of the time)
Participate in Operations support on call rotation to provide support of local control systems. This includes approximately 1 week of 24/7 on call support every 8 weeks. The actual frequency of on call rotation is a function of the on-call schedule and the number of people participating in the group.
Occasional work-generated disruptions to off-the-job personal activities. This includes extended working hours and after-hours troubleshooting calls from field staff or commissioning resources requiring technical assistance. These can occur on weekends or during night-time hours. (Approximately twice per month)
