A typical day at work commenced with: checked my e-mails and responded to the most urgent ones. Reviewed and commented on proposals, working drawings and material sample boards submitted by shopping center prospective tenants. Ditto for existing tenant upgrades. Received telephone calls from various field sub-contractors and advised as necessary regarding the client's current projects. Processed submittals and ensured quick response to RFIs. Processed change orders. Extensive site visit of numerous ongoing tenant construction projects as necessary, to ensure compliance with safety, building code and regulations. Also monitored and evaluated sub-contractor performance to ensure compliance with landlords standards. Conducted post construction checklist. Attended owner/architect pre-bid, project and closeout meetings as necessary.

What i learned aside from the practical application of my technical education was, that any successful project is the result of amicable co-operation between competing interests. I successfully interracted with management, co-workers, negotiated with subcontractors, suppliers, and many individuals involved with various aspects of projects.

The fact that Cadillac Fairview was a very large company, there were many superiors and more experienced managers able and willing to answer any puzzling questions that might arise, hence most of the difficulties of the job were alleviated. Due to the size and excellent organizational culture, people hardly leave the company, hence upward mobility was little difficult for entry level personnels. However, the most enjoyable part of the job was the provision of very comfortable office space, given considerable latitude, support and tools needed to successfully carry out my duties.

A REAL REVIEW : 
Want a company that fired 125% more than they hire? 

A company more interested in  how they may look on social media, then following  our charter of rights & freedoms ... 

A company that requires you to render medical assistance for overdoses on property, without you being allowed to carry Naloxone (downtown Ottawa) 

A company with an HR Manager  that has little proper knowledge of the law & the Human Rights council .  

A company that’ll promote a sloppy, lying, insecure, brown nosing guard (we all know one) to supervisor with terrible interpersonal skills , who makes patrons (and tenants of stores) feel uncomfortable, with terrible rapport with most individuals they interact with on a daily ... 

Subordinates who dread his presence.. 

(Besides them, the other supervisor are incredible) 


A manager who seemingly does all they can, but according to the majority of the guards, should’ve been fired ten times over. 

A company who’ll pair you with negligent, overly agressive, unprofessional & unclean guards with chronically stained uniforms who will have no issue risking your immediate safety... 


5+ year old vests used by at lease 4 people, that will cause a rash leaving you with scars .

As for Ottawa’s Rideau Centre, run by Cadillac Fairview overall; it is an In House that run like a contract company ... 

RECOMMENDED: Apply at The Shaw Centre or The Hotel; they’re both co-joint yo the mall.

Benefits are great, pay is alright. 

Working for Cadillac Fairview for a long time, I've seen things go from an amazing working environment to completely abusive. At one point I attempted to bring it up the HR and got told that if it was so bad that I should just quit.

Multiple attempts to move up in the company both by myself and other colleagues who were  more than qualified, were passed over in favour of hiring from outside of the company. This led to many people becoming fed up and quality employees being forced to leave in order to advance their careers.

Many of the issues are specific to the site, and this isn't the place to air dirty laundry, but when brought forward to higher management and/or HR things were either ignored, swept under the rug, or I was told that I didn't know what I was talking about.

The department is constantly understaffed, morale at an all time low, & trying to promote any type of positive change is met with opposition and distain. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The security staff on the frontline tend to be hard working employees with good intentions.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Everything. You never get recognition for the work you put in. Management takes credit for the work their staff puts in.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
They treat their employees based on their “pay rank”. If you are at the lower level of the pay scale you are treated like you are less then. Your input is never received unless it will benefit them personally. They do not care about the safety of their security staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
You clock in, and then are expect to maintain the safety of the whole establishment but given minimum resources to actually handle the situations properly. Usually you are expected to split up large fights with only 2 or 3 security staff, leaving you outnumbered and in a vulnerable position.

The good - high salary, excellent bonus, company shutdown over the holidays, RRSP matching (you pay 6% and they will pay 9%!!), private cubicles, extremely quiet office, perks aplenty including free food 2 or three times a week (salmon filets and wild rice, not leftover pizza lol)

The bad - so many long time staff who have not been trained in doing anything else for decades that have become institutionalized into not wanting to rock the boat with new ideas.  IT department prefers to buy a solution rather than build one.  When it does build one, it must be developed quickly and matching the 15 year old technology of other in-house apps.   Mgmt is sold new systems by salesmen and then tells staff to make it fit with their other systems.

I've worked in this dynamic environment for 7 years now and I've grown so much as an individual and employee. I have advances my career and education within the Cadillac Fairview Corp. Ltd. by successfully completing my business Administration Certificate and currently completing my Human Resource Management certificate. I started as a part-time seasonal employee and am currently in the Senior Guest Services position. i couldn't ask for a between team of peers, co-workers and management alike. I love the constant interaction, but sometime language and cultural barriers can cause communication disconnect, finding alternative ways of communication and creating an unforgettable enjoyable experience is what we strive for and produce.

Cadillac Fairview is a great company that is spread out all over Canada. They know how to treat their employees and are constantly reviewing their benefit package to ensure they don't just meet industry standards, but go above & beyond.
  As well there are many employees who I have worked with who started at the bottom and have been working their way up over the years.
  In the service centre in Vancouver we had a fast paced environment as 3 of us took care of all tenant issues related to 13 properties. This included not only dispatching maintenance staff for immediate issues but also working with security and management for issues related to construction and safety issues. I loved the busyness, and the idea that while on the surface the job looked mundane you really never knew what would was going to happen on a day to day basis.

A typical day at work when I dealt with management they were quick to act as though the staff were incompetents and they had little reason to keep us. I felt bullied and berated and this also led to feelings of inadequacy amongst the staff towards each other. Every day I was at work I wondered if this would be the day they would fire me. Certainly an unpleasant experience. The only way to advance was to suck up to the company staff regardless of how much or how little work staff actually did, the pay was terrible. The best part of the job was the one time I stopped a shoplifter and helped old people back to their cars.

Most of my coworkers were absolutely great to work with. Management was completely hit or miss. Was usually given one answer, but when brought up work safety legislation or industry standards, answers changed. Probably trying to take advantage of people who don't educate themselves about work safety issues. Training said one thing, management said another.

CF recognize that people are the core of the company that its success rides on their ability to succeed, therefore it invests heavily in them.  There is a good working culture and the people are great with generally very supportive managers.  Amazing benefits.

Like any large corporation, some politics play out especially evident in the Head Office vs. Properties dynamic.  National level teams could do a better job at listening and taking feedback from the property teams.  

What also makes CF good can also make it difficult in that people love their jobs and therefore don't leave, making it difficult to advance (or for outsiders to get a foot into the company).
