As an EA in this district be prepared to be overworked & Underpaid.  Management hasn’t a clue about the job and there are far too few EA’s and behaviours in the classroom have increased.  This district constantly looks at ways to reduce hours so you end up with no meaningful work with student and are a glorified babysitter.   This district also requires training that they will make you take on a prime summer weekend without pay.  They used to offer opportunities during the school year but cut them.  They also don’t properly ensure that ALL EA’s have the proper credentials.  You could take the required certifications but be working alongside someone else who doesn’t.  They threaten you with job loss but in reality they don’t do anything.  This is both from the union and administration.
Choose elsewhere if you can!

I love working with kids, but this position will destroy you.  It's basically impossible to get a continuing position so you have to start over all the time.  They see you as a number not a person.  Teachers and principles treat you badly.  I have never felt so demoralized as I did working for them.  I thought it would be my career until retirement, but it took a terrible toll on me.  They kept cutting down on the number of positions in each school and increasing the number of kids you were to work with.  It's impossible to form a connection and work with the kids properly with the number of kids you are meant to work with.

I never knew how the mood of the student would be any given day so I really enjoyed the challenge of it all.

I learnt a lot about myself and how much I truly invested in each and every student, teacher, parent and co-worker.

The hardest part I felt of the job was having to leave at the end of the day.  It never seemed like there was enough time.

I think the most enjoyable part of the job was when all of a sudden a student understood something they had been struggling with or broke way past what their goals or expectations had been.

The students were wonderful and the faculty very supportive and helpful

Marking for senior language teachers

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Wonderful , and full of equally committed professionals. Great office staff.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Very hectic but fulfilling, as well as teaching senior French Immersion students, there was also the great pleasure of sponsoring groups such as Student and /or Grad Councils.

Anything to do with teaching in the district is great. Very progressive, helpful colleagues and supportive coordinators. Great opportunities for Professional Development, and supportive union environment on the whole. Cannot trust the HR department and their payroll office. Many mistakes made over the years, with a few exceptionally big ones. Very limited accountability on their end, with blame put on employees directly.

I love working with / supporting kids that was the best part of the job.  The management actively sets it up so you don't get continuing positions so you are constantly temporary and having to fight for positions.  They don't respect the work that EAs do and often the teachers were rude.  I was sad to leave, but couldn't stand constantly feeling disrespected and unsupported.  The district sees you as a number not a person who has a relationship with the kids.  

Direction was unclear.  Large projects would be assigned. When the project was completed it was dismissed. Department has tunnel vision on what schools should be doing to support all learners, but does not provide adequate support for teachers to rise to the level they are expected to. Instead of tangible solutions and recommendation, support and recommendation is based on theory. 

They treat new teachers like gum on the underside of the desk. They have zero focus on retention or supporting new teachers and often keep racist and bigoted teachers in positions over new staff due to seniority. The district itself could care less what your mental health or even physical health are like while working there and they will try to take any type of pay away from you as quickly as possible. Stay far away. 

I loved working with the Delta School District and would still be there if my family and I hadn’t moved to Alberta.  People were very caring and encouraging.  Director was empowering and staff in the finance department were always kind and helpful.  It was nice to work for a place that truly cares for what they do and how they do it.

Sole focus on core values of caring and respect has seriously compromised the districts needs for accountability and excellence.
The district complies with none of the core building blocks for operations yet holds managers accountable for the implications of conditions they are not permitted to change.
