DURHAM CHILDRENS AID SOCIETY

I have always enjoyed working with the Public.  I arrive prior to the beginning of my shifts in order to organize for the day.   I work well as a team member and get along with all.    
The hardest part of my job, for me personally, is when a parent has to say goodbye to a child, when that child is being adopted.If the visit is fully supervised, I am required to be in attendance when this takes place.  
The best part of my job is the teaching aspect especially for the young parents,with  babies. I also work well with Adults who may have some Developmental Delays which affect their ability to parent.
I also enjoy working with extended family members of the children in care.These people are often in need of support as well.

The workload is beyond bearable and the supervisors only care that your work is done. At 49 cents a kil for reimbursement for gas,  you are pretty much paying to drive to your clients homes and some can be hours away. Management and staff have been seen many times, fooling around or being intimate in the parking lot or behind a locked door. Staff suddenly moving up the ladder quicker than those more qualified, demonstrates the incestuous relations and inappropriate abuse of power and inequality. Witnessing workers being mean and yelling at their clients and getting away with it, was my last straw. 

Management should be more inclined to those with social service backgrounds, not accounting.  During the last 4-5 years of employment there, the organization was run by an accountant who had little to no reference, or seeming inclination, to get to know staff.  He was rarely seen, other than at mandatory meetings.  He, in essence, is a numbers guy.  He is very good at his job, but apparently had little to no people skills.  The moral of the staff dropped excessively under his management.  He is retiring Sept 2024.  I hope Durham CAS chooses a more balanced candidate next time.

This agency must meet Ministry standards and KPI's so expect a dedicated and committed employee.  In turn they provide you with support, time for work/life balance conflicts, and a positive work environment. 

Great culture, variety and great management.  Made life long friends and felt good about the work you were doing in the community to help families.  Good vacation and sick days.  Team building activities.  Your input mattered.  Able to recommend better processes.  Open communication with management and coworkers.

The Durham Children's Aid Society provides a service like no other. A service that ensures that children and family are safe and living in an environment that is conducive to the developmental well being of both the children and their families. 

Overall, it was an honor and privilege to serve such a progressive organization.

I worked very hard in this job and I loved the kids I worked with.  But my supervisor was not supportive and was too busy with her own second job to support me and give me the help that I needed.  The managers are all stressed out and the leadership team is in another world where they think everything is wonderful.  Its not.

Very nice employees. Clean workspace. Good management. I learned a lot in my time there while working with the IT department The most enjoyable part of the job in my opinion is making the employees happy whether it be fixing an issue with their phone, laptop, tablet, etc.

I learned a great deal during my experience here, mostly about myself. I learned many of my strengths, weaknesses and habits. I worked with a great team including supportive co-workers and a brilliant and helpful supervisor.

thoroughly enjoyed my time spent working with the diverse culture of kids and staff from the different group homes and the kids one on one.
enjoyed beoing able to take the kids to different outings they may not have been able to attend otherwise.
