FRONTIER SCHOOL DIVISION

A unique school environment with many, many challenges for incoming teachers. Most students live at the school in crude dorms, a situation which is, in my opinion, the source of many of the problems teachers face at the school. Administration is bolstered by the fact that the division HQ is on the campus, but there is only so much a small group of people can do. Residence staff are inadequately trained (again -- my opinion).

School culture is one of extremely low expectations, so new and ambitious teachers are welcomed but then quickly drained.

One of the biggest problems I faced in my time at FCI was the lack of socialization between teachers. It was a long and lonely year. There didn't seem to even be much professional collaboration, even amongst teachers of the same subject. As a new teacher, I needed help and received virutally none, despite having a complete staff of highly-paid, subject-specific "consultants" in the Division offices.

The subsidized housing in a nice perk, but the houses themselves are basic and completely unfurnished.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Working with the students, giving them motivation to be everything they can be, encouraging them to go after thier dreams.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Seeing smiles on the students face, showes me that I'm doing right by the students.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Keeping the indigenous culture in schools.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Work from 9am-3:30pm working & teaching students.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The opportunities I gained and the knowledge I acquired.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The lack of clarity. I was slightly confused when working without being shown what to do

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Everyone was welcoming and very kind

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
We would start cleaning at 8:00 am, waxing the floors and scrubbing the walls. Then lunch at 12:00 and a coffee break at 3:00. Day would typically end around 5:00-5:30.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The few people who are a pleasure to work alongside

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The leadership and the lack of buy-in from schools. The attendance rate in the division is abysmal 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Toxic, masculinity! The old adage that its an ‘old boys club’ couldnt be more true at Frontier SD.

Local politics over shadows curriculum goals and working environment.   It's about who you know, and as a result, students suffer academically.

Did have a great principal at the conclusion of my employment; they created a positive culture, but other admin. were sub competent. 

Pay a lot of money for poorly operated teacher association !

Frontier was a great place to work. Being in a newly posted position it allowed me to acquaint myself with the northern regional school division. Lots was learned here.

I worked with adult students ranging in age from 18-25, some were parents and the life issues they faced were different from regular high school.  The rewards of this job was seeing these young adults successfully complete the provincial standard high school diploma

Frontier had provided me with great learning tools to use in my future. School staff at a school i was at were absolutely the most amazing people I ever met and the most supportive people ever.

Frontier has a lot of local voice - which is great. Just learn the local message and it works out. 

I enjoyed working with Oscar Blackburn School, there were great staff and students. I've gained almost three years experience working with great students, and the most enjoyable part I believe was building friendships with your students.

I worked with great people.  The ones that were not in my "team" were a pleasure to work with.  It wasn't that it was competitive it was disorganized, too many cooks in the kitchen, which made it hard to stay on the right track.
