FreshBooks has grown so much. I have seen it as a true start up and it has been a rollercoaster ride of changes. All intentions are good of course.  

Typical day in the office is good. Open concept, dog friendly space, friendly people and a lot of work and meetings that lunches and breaks are sometimes missed (my own fault). Productivity in office is lower for those that work best quietly on their own. Noise cancelling headphones helps. 

Workplace culture is pretty good. Lots of fun perks like nap rooms, ping pong table, massage chairs, free breakfast items like cereals and dogs everywhere! But what good are all the perks if you are under utilized, over worked and not appreciated. 
 
I am lucky to have a great manager but company wide management still need ongoing learning and coaching to help make better decisions that can really impact those around them. Most people leave because of management. Some managers have selfish intentions and a disregard for people's feelings and special situations. They make up their own rules without any HR approval (lack of company wide policies allow them to take advantage of this kind of power).These individuals do not match the company culture but with 300-400 employees, its easy to miss them. More company wide policies need to be put in place to prevent these managers from mistreating employees. Continued management training from various sources and not from same place.

Hardest part of the job is that working from home/remote in some departments are frown upon and not allowed. No exceptions. The salary is too low and not comparable to the cost of living in Toronto making it difficult to settle down, buy a home and raise a family near the office. Many young growing families are forced to buy homes outside of the city. Taking Go train and UP to office is way more expensive than driving. Driving hours in.traffic into office and back home is unhealthy. Either allow staff to work from home 2-3 times a week, allow shifts outside of high traffic times (7am-3pm) or increase salary to compensate for Go train and UP expenses. 

Best part of my job is that I have a bunch of really really good close friends in the office that will always be life long friends to me. 

FreshBooks is the ideal place for just out of school students. Overall, I like working at FreshBooks. Like with any workplace, there is always a few needs improve areas but I consider myself blessed to have a job at FreshBooks regardless because based on feedback and experience, I believe FreshBooks will find a way to grow and improve for all the right reasons.

FreshBooks is a god place to work if you're getting started in your specialized role, but it is not sustainable. Regardless of how they position themselves and their culture, the workplace is toxic. The company claims honesty as a value, yet the culture creates an environment where employees are pit against each other and compete in unhealthy ways. Gossip and shaming is extremely prevalent with senior leaders, and management/senior leaders are exclusive in the information they share with their teams. Crabs in a bucket mentality. 

FreshBooks promotes perks and lifestyle benefits as a way to create a work-life balance. However, ping pong tables and free beer aren't a solution when you're over-worked and burnt out. 

The company promotes diversity and inclusivity yet their methods encourage tokenism by asking POC's to stand up. 

Good place to get started and get experience, and a great place to coast if you're a leader. If you're looking for advancement in between I wouldn't recommend.

Next to zero career progression. No performance management system. No real way to know who is doing well and who isn't.
A good portion of employees already suffering from stunted growth syndrome. A lot are there because it's convenient.
All in all, it serves a good case study of when you grow a company in an unstructured way. 
You have people who have been there a while looking for new opportunities and then you have a whole bucket load of new management hired. The resulting tension is glazed over with the usual kumbaya-culture- every love everybody non sense.

FreshBooks is a forward thinking technology company with some great people both managing it and working in different departments.  The customers really love the solution but more so the organization and the people within FreshBooks are super nice and competent.  

The management is filled with people who know what they are doing and are very approachable.  

The office space is quite different - the building used to be a puck factory.  It may not be for everyone because it is really an open space but you get to meet most of the people from the company and if you ever need a quite spot, there are plenty to be found.

Great place that has plenty of opportunities for people who want to advance their careers. Managers are fair and approachable and understand that sometimes days are just not ok. Mental health days aren't looked down upon so don't be afraid to take them. The only downside is caseload is a bit unrealistically high at times especially in Support which is almost chronically understaffed. Often felt like I couldn't get things done the way I wanted unless I stayed late which isn't encouraged (good work/life balance). Overall though great job that pays a fair wage and includes full benefits

FreshBooks has a great culture that encourages both personal & professional development in a collaborative, friendly environment. The company is experiencing a lot of growth which means there is opportunity to try new and challenging things. People are VERY passionate especially the Customer Support team which is world-class from a service perspective.

I really love this company and what they stand for. I think that as it scaled in size, the more they lost the culture. It started feeling more like a big corporation where everyone was a number and your voice wasn’t being heard. When the cofounder stepped down from the CEO position the company made bad decisions and the work didn’t feel meaningful or impactful. 

I’m still pulling for FreshBooks and I hope to see them succeed. 

The original owners are nice people to work with but the current "leadership" team is fueled by their egos. In the past 2 years, there has been such a high turnover of talented people, especially on the marketing team. 

Was a great place to work. Co-founders were the nicest people ever! Very intelligent, successful yet humble, kind, caring and fun. Very approachable.

Company treats employees really well. A few bad hires affected the culture or work environment however most of the team was stellar.

They have been in a downward spiral before COVID but like to blame the Coronavirus for everything.  Executive Team is dysfunctional.  HR has no authority. Sales is an old boys club. Call Center may as well be a factory setting. Marketing got rid of it's Executive and is a mess.
