What is the best part of working at the company?
The sweet, loving, and caring residents!! Its like having a bunch of grandparents under one roof!! They were the reason I woke up happy and excited to get to work!! 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The managers and other employees show and prove everyday that they are only there for the paycheck! They arent there for the wellbeing and care of the seniors/residents. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is VERY toxic. You basically get in trouble for EVERY little thing that involves making the seniors lives better. I got fired for it. Every single resident in that building LOVED me and I love/care for each of them just as much. Well.....the supervisors and other staff couldnt handle that. They gave me problems everyday everytime i went above and beyond for any of the residents! 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Get there and walk in to all my favourite smiling faces sitting there waving and greeting me as i walk in. I take 5 min to make sure i say hello and acknowledge each of them before i head to staff room to put my belongings away. Depending on what department i work that day, i either head to kitchen or janitors room to prep for my duties after dinner service. By 4:15pm im taking orders in dining room and serving by 4:30. Dining area is cleared by 4:50 and we prepare for second dinner service starting at 5:15. After dinner, I either clean  dining room or start  my cleaning duties on each level.  I make time to check in on residents who either a) missed dinner service or b)not well. I finish up my requirements by 11pm

Working as an Activity and Wellness Coordinator with GEF has been an extremely  rewarding experience. I am grateful to have a leadership team that truly supports their staff. In fact, I believe that I have been well-supported since day one. Although supervisors aren't onsite daily with you, they provide clear onboarding, regular check-ins, and plenty of opportunities for learning, development, and professional growth. Additionally, the Activity and Wellness Coordinator position allows you to express creativity when it comes to program planning and implementation, which is highly rewarding. One of the most enjoyable parts of the job is the collaboration with team members and the shared passion that GEF staff have for seniors. Work-life balance is highly respected and GEF provides fantastic benefits. If you are looking for a company that invests in its people, then GEF is a great choice! 

I was hired in 2021 to be an equipment operator as well as delivery driver to sites and general maintenance. I asked in my interview if there was room to move up. In 2023 I was offered a trade which is gladly accepted. I have been successful and supported in this role. I feel like management wants me to succeed and they are very happy to help. As for my co workers I have nothing but respect and admiration for them. They have been pillars in my journey with this company. 

All the negative reviews people leave on her are directly related to the effort they put into their job. Bad apples will not succeed in this business. Zero to no effort will result in a bad time here. You need to put in the work to enjoy your time. If you want to slack and not work this job isn’t for you. 
I have actively told friends and family about open positions to apply for. I am not leaving this job, it is exactly what one would hope for in a company.

I’ve appreciated how much emphasis is placed on quality of life, not only for the seniors who live here but also for employees through teamwork, training, and opportunities for growth.

Tons of micromanaging in between departments and sites. Constant changes to workflow and work demands, If you disagree or question anything you are immediately written up and giving warning letters. 

The only good thing that comes out of this is working with seniors, but the life enrichment team does not put the needs of the seniors first. Even though this is a non-profit, they are definitely in it for profit. 

Completely sad and disgraceful management team at Central office. The CEO does not care about the benefits of the seniors and I would even go as far as to tell people not to put your family member into these buildings.

A day in Administration is never predictable so no day is ever boring. In my experience, our team is constantly learning and growing together with an excellent variety of Learning and Development opportunites offered. Our residents are well cared for by a large team of people that bring many different skills and services to the site. Residents and Staff have a large and creative variety of activites to participate in. The Food Services staff and Chef go above and beyond to create wonderful meals and events for both staff and residents. It is definitely stressful at times but I feel well supported by my Managers, Central Office and coworkers. I would recommend working at GEF. 

I love the work that I do, and the management team is amazing in supporting me to get my job done. The work life balance they encourage is fantastic, and they clearly have my wellbeing in mind. All of the team members across departments are all so great, always helping when they can and have been so kind and welcoming to the team! Though there can be challenges when working with seniors, the residents are a well of knowledge and conversations, and my managers are always there to support when I feel overwhelmed. 

It was an absolutely awful experience. The management in Activities are relentless bullies - they constantly chose favorites, and tried to pit employees against each other. If you questioned anything, you were written up. There was no autonomy, and the micromanagement was incessant. It often felt like they didn't care at all about the well-being of the residents. The turnover rate for this position for the past year or so is hovering around 75%, so I know it wasn't just me who felt this way. Don't walk. Run.

Your experience working here will vary from site to site (some sites are better than others), but overall GEF is a good company to work for, especially if you're getting out of the restaurant industry. It's not perfect, but it's open to criticism and improving its practices. Albeit slowly.

Pro's: Stable work/plenty of hours (caveat: overtime is being restricted, and some sites are short staffed for a reason), decent pay, flexible schedule, and free food.

Con's: Incompetent leadership (some Chef's have no idea what they're doing).

GEF Seniors Housing is a great place to work. Your coworkers become more like family, this leads to a fun and energetic work environment. While pay is a bit lower than industry standards due to being a nonprofit, the residents more than make up for this. After all they are the real reason why we do what we do! If you are thinking about joining GEF, do so! It is a great place to work and the people we work with as well as for are wonderful as well!
