A typical day started out at 730 each morning, prepped Breakfast for the resident and got their medication ready to be administered. at 800am i would wake the resident up. After breakfast the resident would walk to school and would return at noon for lunch. at 1130 before the resident would arrive I would prepare a healthy lunch for them and then after 1230 i would send the resident back to school. 
At 3:00pm The resident would come home from school and have a healthy snack. I would often organize after school outtings for the resident to the museum, bowling, go carting, paint balling or the mall this way I could ensure positive development and I could keep him out of trouble. We would often have dinner while out on our adventures and usually return home by 9:00. At 1100 I would administer the bed time medication and start the journal of the day. and by 1200 I was usually on my way to bed. I learned patience, sensitivity, good listening skills and how to organize and plan daily events and maintain and manage schedules. I also learned how to manage finances for the resident and how to teach him to manage his own finances over time. I didn't have any coworkers while doing this. The hardest part of this job was the long busy days and the consistent lack of down time. the most enjoyable part of this job was the feeling I got knowing I was helping to make a positive difference in my residents life.

Everyone was very helpful in providing information and helping me learn the ropes.  My previous work experience proved invaluable to some of the staff I worked with and I was able to help or teach them some of the knowledge I have. i.e using MSOffice programs, fixing photocopiers and printer jams, organizing files, office supplies, and storage room and reception duties.

The hardest part of the job was working in a very dusty environment and lifting very heavy boxes especially getting them on and off shelves while on a ladder.  The most enjoyable part of the job was the help I received from some of the staff with things that were awkward to move or lift.  My manager was really great to work with and she let me have complete control of my project and how I wanted to proceed.  She gave me great encouragement and even offered to give me a reference with no hesitation.

The only downside was that bureaucracy impedes allot of the processes and slows down efficiency and the adaptation of new technology.  Having worked in the private sector and in Government one can see the whole picture on both sides and how these two sectors could learn and assist each other.

Every department has a completely different culture, and, like any job, your boss will dictate the quality of your work experience. You may love the way one department works, and hate your life working in another. Unfortunately, there is very little way to find out in advance if you'll be empowered and trusted, or micromanaged.

Opportunities for internal advancement are basically non-existent so you will find yourself hopping from one department to another when you are looking to move up. This is very common and you'll find most people stay in roles for about 2 years before jumping to the next opportunity.

The hiring process is brutal, especially for analysts. You will not find the job you are looking for, you must apply to a general PM2 or PM3 pool which only opens up maybe once per year. If you have an area of expertise you are looking to pursue, good luck, you will have no way of knowing if there are any openings that suit your experience and you will not be able to apply for them directly.

Working outside all summer and fall with work truck and personal vehicles to sit in for ac wasn’t healthy! To go during massive heat wave always made a person sick getting in and out of an air-conditioned vehicle that you don’t even feel anymore cause the sun is so hot into that heat makes a person really sick! The one station is borderline cell service some days you can’t even get LTE booster hasn’t worked in years! For a seasonal job, you get lots of faulty equipment and you can’t just tow it back-and-forth being not close to Winnipeg! 

Working in the government is not for everyone they are 20 years behind everyone else in terms of technology and efficiency, and there is a big disconnect between top management and lower level workers. Also, there is a lot of discrimination if you are a person of color. 

I would also say that this is not a fun place to work if you are a young person / recent graduate. If you really want to succeed in your career and learn something new, you should not work in the government. Maybe when you are 40 year old with wife and kids, it will make sense to have a government job with the job security and benefits it has.

Just my 2 cents. 

The management that I've had the opportunity to work with has been accommodating and understanding, there are opportunities for growth and advancement within the workplace, and varied responsibilities that can prevent monotony. 

Unfortunately the work hours are quite regimented (8:30-4:30, Mon-Fri) with no opportunity to accrue overtime or create a flexible schedule. Additionally, if you are employed in a casual position there are little to no benefits available to you and no opportunity to accrue vacation or sick leave outside of banking extra work hours prior to taking time off.

Government position.  Management supportive (in my experience) within scope of authority.  Good people to work with.  Very fast-paced environment, high pressure.   Accuracy, ability to think on your feet, ability to follow direction and legislation/policy are essential.  Can be incredibly stressful, and a good home/work balance is required.

I worked as a Youth Engagement Leader for the Government of Manitoba. As someone with their B.A. in a related field I was only paid $1 over minimum wage. They were very stingy about mileage and I had to use my vehicle for work without being reimbursed because of this. The hours of work were good. However, I was consistently harassed by members of the public and was not provided with a satisfactory work station with safety or privacy barriers of any kind. The management was impossible to reach as they were all located in Winnipeg (I was not) and was not helpful at all with these issues.

There are 17 departments and associated agencies in the government so there is no typical day.  However, the government is guided by respectful workplace and diversity policies that work to ensure employees can come to work each day and feel productive.  There is a strong team environment and willingness to collaborate between programs and departments. Management is typically willing to give growth project to employees
