Gladstone House

To work as a room attendant can be quite frustrating even if you have experience. 

There is only 1 linen closet, is not organized in any way, the porters are the one in charge of the linen closet but nobody organizes anything. The excuse is that is a very small closet. 

The linens are all white, is very hard to distinct them from sizes, mostly because they are not properly set in the linen closet, a lot are not the right size or have some stain mostly from the laundry room. Porters just take the linen and leave in the laundry bags inside the closet. So one has to go start opening bag to bag, move them heavy bags until you find whatever you are looking for.  

The porters do not help much. Because there is only 1 linen closet for 2 floors, when extra linen is needed the porters are in charge to help bring whatever is needed for the RA. However most of the time they will say they already pass the 3rd floor so now they brought the linen up to the closet. Or they will say the things are in the closet. Either case is usually the RA whom has to go up to get the things. 

The rooms are quite easy to clean, and the hotel has a good vibe to it. However something so simple, like having an organized linen closet, maybe have the porters organize the carts for the RA for when they arrive in the morning, and properly answer to the request the RA has. 

Its a nice workplace, working hours are good, rooms are very easy to clean. but to be RA can be very draining, and frustrating, but not even from the job, but mostly just the way things are organized.

At the Gladstone I was the night-time manager/ wrangler. I oversaw the the whole venue, hotel, galleries and often coordinated 2 or 3 events and the same time. A typical day started with checking the event schedule and seeing what set-up was going to be required for each room. From there I would coordinate with the bar, floor and kitchen staff and get the ball rolling on what we had to do. Often we would be catering a wedding, a corporate event and an art opening, all at the same time. That would be in addition to whatever regular business we were doing in the cafe and the hotel above. My role, once everything was going, was to 'float' and pick up any slack and make sure staff and clientele had everything they needed. I learned that with the right planning, execution and a solid team and business could juggle a lot of events and pretty much accomplish anything.

The upper management was great, calm, intelligent, experienced and open-minded. Pretty much the ideal. Co-workers were a great bunch, artists, musicians, actors, comedians. You couldn't have had a more interesting group of people to work with. The hardest part of the job was with so much going on the hours could be pretty long. The best part of the job was working with such a smart, funny group of people. It made everything flow.

The Gladstone has a great team of people, which is the reason many people start here.

Many people in management are friends with the owner, causing non-efficient hires and favoritism even after employee complaints.

Chance for advancement within the company, great benefits...eventually...after chasing down HR.

Be prepared to take on everything. Whatever is in your job description including other job descriptions. Work/life balance is fine for entry level jobs. It's obvious management is overworked. Some management works barely any hours, maybe an 8 hour day if it's a long day for them, while others are working 12-14 hours 6 days a week. HR is terrible, most management doesn't know anything about working front line. Not all. Most.

My coworkers were great but unfortunately, I had a terrible experience with management.  Middle management was clearly underqualified and overworked and taking it out on workers.  It was like a revolving door with many different managers during my time there.  No policy/procedure/system in place for anything, including health and safety.  At the start, there were lots of shifts but now there aren't.  The healthcare benefits were good.  I wouldn't recommend working here.  It's portrayed as a 2SLGBTQ+ safe space but it clearly isn't anymore.  The other reviews on this page are for a different organization in Vancouver so I would disregard them.

The job was great, clientele even better. Management and Owner were amazing people to work for, but mostly with. 

A typical day at work was to check guests, in and out of the hotel, ensuring a great experience for them. The hardest part of the job was the over night hours which unfortunately led to leaving the job.

The most enjoyable part of the job was the community that the Gladstone Hotel hosted on a daily basis. It is very inviting to those who want to return, but also to those who want to visit for the first time.

Overall, a short but amazing experience.

There's a great open door policy between management and staff but since it's a smaller hotel folks applying should be prepared to take on anything and/or everything. Work-life balance is fine for entry level jobs but it's obvious management is overworked by the amount of turnover and recent vote to unionize.

A day at work can sometimes be hectic.
However I've learned to manage stress and prioritize effectively.
There has been a lot of management changes over the past 4 years so therefore not a strong leadership environment.
This tended to bond the workers to carry on operations and forged good friendships.
The hardest part of the job for me is dealing with abusive customers.
The most enjoyable is making a guest feel comfortable.

I loved the creative and collaborative environment of Gladstone. Because the hotel was run by a creative personality type, things could get chaotic and at times very reactionary. There wasn't a lot of career advancement long term but I was very happy with the growth opportunities over the few years I was there. Definitely a great place to get your feet wet and engage with different personalities.

Mini  private art institution /hotel is an interesting  and challenging place to work .Ever revolving staff in hospitality  departments make  improving and progressing difficult. Old building has expected  issues  and owners/management slow to react
