My typical day at the station (I do have the option to work from home, but it's frowned upon) - I get here around 8am and work till 5:30pm - 6pm. I try and take lunch, but I don't always get to.  I have been put in a room where there is little foot traffic, but I still hear a LOT of action going on in other parts of the building. Laughter. Visiting. Talking about work.  So, I put my earbuds in and try and concentrate on what I'm doing. I don't have any music in the earbuds, but it deadens the other sounds I'm hearing. I miss being around/ working side-by-side with other fellow staff members.  The best part of my day is when one of our newer staff members comes and visits me. She is ALWAYS cheerful and kind. There is another lady in this office who, when she does make it to my room, is ALWAYS encouraging... AND our C.O.O. is amazing! He ALWAYS acknowledges me and makes time for me.   During my breaks, I walk around the building chatting with people, asking them how they are doing... sharing a funny anecdote, and then getting back to work. I feel encouraged and feel I can make it to the end of the workday. The hardest part of my job is not getting along with my manager. I really try to please him, but feel I always mess up in some way and disappoint him.  What I've learned lately is that even though I feel invisible on a daily basis, I'm not. I am valuable to this company. The work I do is very important. I have also learned that I will never fit into the "boys club" around here, not that I have to, though being a part of some kind of team would be nice.  What I do appreciate about my manager - he is a hard worker. He expects the very best from everyone, which means he is also easy to disappoint. He is busy a lot, and not always available. When I do ask a question, I am often made feel stupid, and incompetent. I do know, he has a lot on his plate, a lot is being asked of him by our Executives, and he is VERY good at what he does. He KNOWS a lot about our business. I do hear him laugh, I hear him showing compassion to others, and he is kind to others. He has shown me grace, sometimes when I least expected it. He is doing a great job, from what I can tell. He is spoken highly of by our Executive Team. The most enjoyable part of my job is hearing from the public (those outside our office) that I've done a good job. Hearing laughter in the hallways. Feeling a self of accomplishment when I've completed the tasks I've been assigned and then complimented by those who gave me the task. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
Free event tickets and stuff, advance knowledge of the goings-on in town, and an elevator for the physically challenged.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Management and unrealistic expectations and lack of communication.  Lack of HR support/assistance for new employees.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment is quiet and surface level friendly. There is a veneer illusion of culture.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Arrive early and prepare another round of coffee because the morning show personalities already drank almost all the first round of coffee. Greet coworkers and get to work checking for missed commercials and try and fit in what's ready to match the contract, flag those that aren't ready, handle calls and mail and customers as they come, keep track of inventory and office needs and handle shopping/orders as necessary. Manage files and order tracking and delegation, communication between departments is your responsibility to monitor. Input sales orders to a variety of systems for tracking and production. Post obituaries and events as requested. Notify DQ of the birthday winner. Keep the kitchenette clean and stocked. Accomodate out of town guests. 
Manage auto fleet use, care, and maintenance. Manage petty cash. Manage auction from advertising to item management to client questions to prize distribution. Supervise casual employee. Holiday decor set up and take down.  More duties as requested.

Misrepresentation of employment offer. "Full-time" position but hired part-time with no change. They advertise full-time but offer the opposite.

Pay is surprisingly low, just above minimum wage. There is a culture of distrust among employees and gossiping that I never have before seen.

No win-win mentality within this corporation and local offices. The hardest part of the job was dealing with the negative/jaded employees.

Verbal abuse/bulling by senior staff. Management approacehed and aware yet did nothing.

They portray a much different image within the community but do not practice what they preach in house. Many within the area also stated they 'heard' it was not a good place to be.

Attitude of "Us and them" when it comes to full-time employees and part-time.

It's a large company in ways but still pretty grounded in its community roots. Broadcasting can be a stressful job, with an unwritten expectation of being available at any time/all the time. This is not a slight against the company, it's just the nature of the beast. Unfortunately, compensation, promotion, etc. might not correlate to the amount of quality work and growth that one contributes. However, it is a well-run company with lots of opportunity for experience and growth.

I feel that overall when looking at broadcasting companies GW is one of the better ones. Though salary may not be competitive for most, there is trade off in job stability and loyalty from management. While they do have high expectations they also are willing to work with people who are having a tough time. 

The great thing about the job was meeting and interviewing all the interesting local people I was privileged to talk to every day. I also worked with some very talented and lovely colleagues. I appreciated all the positive feedback I received from listeners when I was in the community.
The down side was while the expectations were very high, especially when it came to working long, unpaid hours, the pay was especially low. I would not recommend this organization to people with families or that want to have a life outside of work. Many areas of the workplace environment are toxic, depending on the supervising manager.

Their corporate structure makes it so that nobody in management is held accountable. If you tell your local boss about a request, he will ask the regional boss—then the regional boss has to ask the head boss. Nobody can ever give you a reason for anything, they always just point the finger up the chain of command. They will promise you things and not follow through. All the while, they demand more and more from you. Management can’t identify a valuable employee to save their lives. Nobody with serious journalistic chops is gonna stay here long-term, and they don’t care. They’ll just fill the position with a new person who’s willing to be taken advantage for a chance to work in media. This company needs corporate restructuring—they should try hiring management based on merit rather than years spent at the company.

Community is a big part of what we do with Golden West Radio and keeping our listeners updated on events, local sports, weather and so many other subjects. 
All departments, we work well together and it helps being on the same floor and communication with one another on upcoming morning show guests or contests and giveaways. 
Management is always an open door policy and very comfortable to work with.
Hardest part of the job is leaving it every day because I enjoy it so much but it's not a 9-5 job, you are always keeping an ear and eyes out for things happening around the community and on social media to share either right away of next day on air. 
Most enjoyable is the being able to share whats going on around our community with our listeners and also meeting them and event being apart of sharing new music from artist especially those that are local.

Radio is a fun gig. There are moments when you forget about the toxic environment and fully enjoy the community connection that comes with this job.

However, the pay is not good and the job comes with strange expectations. 
Yearly reviews are few and far between meaning raises are rarely handed out.

A seemingly endless ladder of management will get in the way of anything you try creatively and on-air personalities are told almost word for word what you should say on air. 

A company that preaches "hyperlocal" won't hire locals or pay the current staff enough to stick around resulting in a high turnover of good talent. 

Centers are run with a skeleton staff and still held to high expectations. 

Unprofessional, unorganized, abusive, and lack of communication don’t even being to sum up the culture here. Management is a disappointment. The Gender pay gap is very real in this company and favouritism is practiced by the management. Advancement is near impossible and job security is non- existent. The turn over rate in the Swift Current center alone should speak Volumes about this company overall. They claim to be a Christian company but I have never witnessed such un Christian like behaviour in my life. They do not practice what they preach in house. They will work you to the bone and it will never be enough. You will be unappreciated, undervalued, and belittled by your superiors. I would not recommend this work place to my worst enemy. DO NOT APPLY.
