Health Sciences North Research Institute is more a vessel for upper management to promote themselves rather than to be about medical and health research for the people of Sudbury. Management will readily hire friends and promote them to high positions with little to no relevant credentials. There is a complete lack of support for the Scientists who perform the research and their staff, throwing the Scientists under the bus in order to save themselves and their irrelevant positions. Since its inception, HSNRI has systematically removed anyone who challenged the model for a more sustainable model, leaving the institute with bare-bone staffing which would make the institute barely pass as an actual place of research. Their multi-million dollar facility is a constant money drain, and rather than to admit they made a mistake, they continue fuelling what little money they have into the maintenance of the building, whose infrastructure continues to crumble despite the multi-million dollar renovations. All HSNRI employees work in fear of being fired or let go at any moment, leaving the atmosphere tense and drab. 

Truly a horribly mis-managed research institute.

A very fast paced, demanding but educational, diverse and gratifying environment . Nursing staff was amazing and wonderful bonds and respect was earned and given. We felt important and we were treated as such. We gained respect of our senior staff and the valuable asset we made to them. ALL of the patient needs were met and exceeded, there was no rush and proper care was given. Injuries/hazards,spread of illness,skin breakdowns, were reduced with close hands on monitoring of our patients in our care with more hands on deck. (Hospitals should employee PSW's to alleviate pressure off nursing staff, help in ADL's of patients, help decrease "return" trips to hospitals and to obtain patient goals of returning and preparedness once home. I believe with more PSW's on the specific units assisting with transitional care, ALC patients, post-operative patients,there is a decrease in preventable "issues" that commonly arise)

Healthcare is a money grab for doctors and bureaucrats, it’s that simple. If they really cared in healthcare they would be more accessible, smaller salaries and less perks for the big shots. More people did due to medical malpractice 20,000-30,000 estimated in Canada more than approx 220 firearm deaths and 3-4000 motor vehicle deaths per annum. Google it.
If managers , directors, board members and CEOs really cared they would take pay cuts, open their offices and boardrooms as extra hospital rooms, cut their bonuses and come in to cover shortages. Most of them have licences to practice but they don’t. Or won’t.
Front line staff and the public suffer, or worse.

I lasted under two weeks. Staff are not too kind to new people with years of experience. They "want you to succeed".  but think nothing of throwing you to the wolves with little training, and expect you to "hit the ground running". Bad attitudes and behavior are never reprimanded, but take your break at the wrong time and expect to be hauled into the office. There is a reason this place continues to hire for the same roles. It's not a healthy, nor happy work environment, and has very high turnover. This is the place where sociopaths thrive and the meek cry. You've been warned.


Too many managers, not enough staff. Always short staffed... I believe a good working environment starts from the top and unfortunately Medical Records at HSN was a negative environment to work in. I felt like a number, and that I didn't mean anything, especially for the work I put in. We always got told what we did wrong, and not even a thank you or good job for the work completed. Christmas time - nothing! Our managers are on the sunshine list making over 100k/year, and we can't even get a Merry Christmas? If I was to go back to HSN, it definitely wouldn't be in the medical records department!

I did all my critical care placements at HSN. I'm grateful to all the experience I had at that hospital. I get to see and learn what is really like to work in a hospital environment. On each floor, I get to practice the skills I've learned in class and use my critical thinking to make decisions independantly for the best of my patients. I had great teachers who were extremely strict and learned a lot about time management and responsibility. Overall I will never forget both the good and bad experience, because  they all helped me to become a better nurse.

Our hospital is very low staffed and barely have any beds available for our patients. Our unit is constantly working short staffed and management does not feel as though they need to do anything about it, even after continuously voicing our concerns every week. A lot of staff have left our unit. I absolutely love the health staff i work with and we try to stay positive however its becoming very difficult.

Salary and benefits are great.

Always short staffed so employees are chronically overworked.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Employees are just a number and patients represent the almighty dollar!!

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
There is always too much to do and nowhere near enough time to do it in.

Many pros and cons like any large, public organization. The Frontline staff really care about the people and are what really makes HSN a great place to work. Some great managers that want to see their employees succeed but no opportunity to move up if you are not bilingual. The workplace culture is not very good at times but that is because of a select few. Overall, it is a great place to work if you understand it’s publicly funded healthcare organization that is open 24/7.

Not a nice place to work, totalitarian,  high turnover, a lot of nonsense rules, cancel culture, best part of the job was getting fired for not getting vaccinated, keep looking because it is a very dehumanizing place to work.
