Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital

Holland Bloorview offers the opportunity to make a difference, impacting lives and challenging the staff with in an atmosphere that is defined by dynamic people doing remarkable work on a daily basis. 
  One of the hospital-wide projects was to streamline all processes from initial referral to first appointment and through all levels of therapy to discharge. LEAN is a customer-centric methodology used to continuously improve any process through the elimination of waste in everything you do; it is based on the ideas of “Continuous Incremental Improvement” and “Respect for People.” As you can imagine this was a lengthy and challenging project. I was impressed with the detailed, solution-oriented participation of all levels involved.
 There was a variety to my daily responsibilities that kept me interested and valued by my colleagues and clients. I find this atmosphere very motivating. The trust from direct management to complete a task independently or within a team effort is very satisfying. 
  I would always recommend employment at HBKRH to anyone interested in making a difference in the lives of others and thereby improving your own character and career goals.

Most of my time was spent working directly with the kids, all under 3 yrs old. Them coming to the playroom was meant to be a break from the hospital rooms and appointments offices, so the room was filled with bright colours, and it was very important that we kept everything laid back and as fun as possible. It was never only myself in the room, there was always a supervisor and one or two other volunteers, so we typically worked one-on-one with the kids, which allowed us to give them all of our attention and make sure they were safe when playing with the toys. The most difficult parts of the job were that, because all of the kids were so young and we only saw them when they came to the playroom, if something happened and they got upset it took quite a bit of time to calm them down, and it would usually start a chain reaction of fussing or crying from the other kids. My personal favourite part though was the gratification that comes from both the kids themselves, seeing them having fun and smiling and knowing that this gives them a break, and letting the parents have worry-free breaks from their kids. All in all it was a very fun and rewarding experience and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

The best part of the day was definitely the clients and their families and the feeling that you had made a difference in someone's life. Front line staff are extremely dedicated and knowledgeable -- they stay because of their dedication in spite of ridiculous and backwards management style. Upper management in particular needs to give their collective heads a shake. They would like to see this organization run like an assembly-line factory without realizing that these are people that we are dealing with, not products. There are many practices that are not client-centred at all and which are intended to push as many people through as possible without consideration for the quality of work. In the last year that I was there I saw many staff quit in frustration or who were fired for not toeing the party line. Abysmal HR department that does nothing to support staff. Salary is not in line with other hospitals. Extremely poor morale -- I left in part because I couldn't stand to listen to all the complaining about the toxic work environment. To call this one of GTA's "top" employers is a joke.

This is a small day care located at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital. Most of the work colleagues are hard working individuals who have worked here for a longer period of time, in order to ensure financial stability. Despite of that, Kindercircle Day Care is a hostile and toxic work environment for a certain reason which I cannot specify furthermore. However, given the following information I hope you can puzzle this certain justification. Your mental health and well-being is more worthy than this place and you do not want to jeopardize it here otherwise. Calling in sick, requesting time off and vocation is a hassle NO MATTER what the circumstance is, period. Your voice and competence as a working individual is always insufficient; meaning what you say or do with confidence means absolutely NOTHING. Working with children in general is already an exhausting job as it is. Honour my advice and experience at your own glory hands because being in an environment like this is NOT WORTH anyone’s time and more importantly energy. Please take your time and seek elsewhere where you will be truthfully appreciated and valued as an employee. All the best! 

I learned about working in HR.  I come from a retail and Customer service background.  I was able to show what I can do in an office environment and contribute in a positive and productive way.  
The people in the office are friendly, full of energy, and hard workers to make sure the help Holland Bloorview a great experience for everyone who works, volunteers, and make everyone feel like family.  
Security is a high priority as it is a hospital, which means staff, volunteer, and client safety is important.  
Staff Parking is inconvenient to get to.  The walk from the parking lot to the hospital is a nice walk.  Getting to the staff parking lot is inconvenient as you have to go through a residential area to get to it and the majority of the streets have no turning signs to reduce the amount of non residential traffic.  If you ask for a FOB, you can bypass the no turning signs, but you still have a nice walk.

Working at the Bloorview research institute (BRI) was a very negative and toxic time in my life. The scientist I worked for was a micromanager, lacked trust in their staff, had control issues, and treated her staff very poorly (yelling, aggressive emails, hostility). Even after multiple complaints to higher management and HR, very little was done to support the staff. HR and the BRI knew this person caused many issues, and created a hostile work environment, but did nothing to fix the problem. We had no choice but to leave the organization. The only thing I enjoyed about Bloorview was the people I met from other labs who became close friends of mine. Bloorview could be an okay place to work if you have a good scientist, but if you have any issues, do not expect to be supported. Also the growth is very limited, no job stability (all contract jobs), and pay is not great.

-preparation of pre-meeting documents, and distribution to all attendees of post-meeting/following minutes and supplemental documents
-frequent calendar management for multiple managers
-This was a transitional role for 5 weeks only: although a short employment period, I enjoyed the experience (Agency placement)
-Senior management provided support to all registered Massage Therapists to advance their education (obtaining their Masters Degree in Physiotherapy)
-very positive environment for all children and young adults who required special physiotherapy care, including Autism, and other specialized care.

I thoroughly enjoyed working here with every staff member. Everyone was friendly, encouraging, supportive and really really helpful. I felt like this was a big family. 

I learned a lot working here. I had a change of perspective on many things in life. The management was friendly, understanding and amazing. The workplace culture was one of acceptance, regardless of where you come from or who you are.

I enjoyed interacting with some of the doctors and also some of the children there. They also have celebrations for every form of festival, from Pride, to Caribbana, the list goes on. Lots of free food too during the festivals!

As a dental hygiene student, I had the chance to shadow and assist in the dental department of Holland-Bloorview. We provided dental services with children with mental and/or physical disabilities as well as adults that worked in the hospital. A typical day at the clinic included a huddle in the morning, providing scheduled appointments, observing surgeries, and retrieving patient paper files. The hardest part of the job was to provide services to the patients without causing any harm, as some would have violent or aggressive movements. The most enjoyable part of the job was being to help in any way to improve the oral health of the patients.

You are not working at Holland Bloorview but a small daycare within it.. This is a small daycare that takes care of mainly the children of the employees of Holland Bloorview. 

The work culture here is toxic and it is evident that the staff here lack empathy and have lost the care in childcare. 

Caring for young children is a hard enough job already and it's even harder when you don't have support from your colleagues. You won't get teamwork at this place but criticism and back stabbing.

I am not surprised that this godforsaken place is once again hiring staff again.
