I was a patient transporter. 
I found the job to be easy once you get to know the place. Great pay, Unionized "position". If you don't go into details you are protected and represented. The only difficult thing was dealing with others. Nurse are among those with the highest level of stress. They sometimes take it out on you. Patients and families are going through a hard time which they also take out on you. It's a matter of just taking everything with a grain of salt and knowing what your job entails. You are absolutely allowed to help, but when they are giving you attitude for no reason.. is it really your job? No, patients need to be ready upon arrival. If you treat people with respect they will help you.
If you do your job, you won't have to see the bosses. All they want is for you to do your job without causing ripples. They will absolutely defend you if anything goes wrong with other staff members, so long as you know what your job is. 
After 3 months of full availability, they are flexible with how much they'll call you to work. You just have to let recall know. 
You work in a team. Some calls require 2 people as it is a bed, if you are strong and don't appreciate your back, you can do it alone. As of recently, I know transport does calls to the morgue. Just not on the weekend. 
Like any other hospital job, you won't immediately get a position unless thats specifically what they are looking for. You will most likely only get replacement or extra shifts, which honestly would come out to a 30+ hours week. Salary is amazing, if you're not full time. HR isn't very helpful but the team has some pretty cool people that will give you the inside scoop. 
Don't look like you know where you're going when you're alone or else, I am NOT joking, you will get a crowd of 10+ people asking you where to go. Especially by the main entrances. You turn into an info station and can't get away. It might just be me because I look approachable? 
If you're able to take insults left and right, get told what your job is from people who don't know, be treated like you're new for 2 years and be smart enough to take advantage of your looks and youth... so basically any other customer service job only with college and university educated individuals... you'll be fine.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the opportunity to learn about different medical centres while working there. The lack of a union for administrative support staff is not a good thing. The time it takes for a recall employee to find a regular position can be quite long, and recall work does not provide for a stable income. Many staff are helpful, and you have to be efficient to work as a recall employee, and to adapt to the different personalities of your co-workers. Helping the patients and the administrative tasks are not the most difficult aspects of the job. Working with difficult colleagues sharing a work space was, and less competent ones also.  Recent overall restructuring and  cutbacks to funding by the Minister of Health does not make it easy to work in health care if you are expecting a regular non recall position within a short time framework.  It can be worthwhile from time to time, overall I would not recommend this position  for a person expectating a  rewarding administrative position if you do not have a skin as thick as a rhinocerus.

Worst place to work at if you want any kind of job advancement. They sell a zero tolerance to violence in the workplace however constant bullying and name calling in a malicious and angry way. It is like being in high school. Except in high school students that are aggressive and bad for classroom morale are suspended or expelled. The jgh wants only good publicity so the managers try the whole come on its not that bad, you dont have to overreact approach instead of doing what there job entails. Constantly sweeping things under the rug. Do not go work in any office in this hospital. The worst office is anything in the human resources department or the recall center. I have heard and seen what goes on and they should be ashamed.

P.S. The quebec top employer award is something companies buy to distract from how bad their institution is. Dont buy into their propaganda.

Exposure to a variety of practices and good standards. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The departmental management I was under had a very toxic and conservative environment that hindered growth and opportunities for new employees. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Only worked in one department and it was quite toxic. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Heavy assignments for new nurses and those who do not conform to unit politics, while old nurses or (day shift) assistant head nurse’s favorites get preferred assignments or easy ones. No acknowledgement of hard work; head nurse very weak in asserting boundaries and not acknowledging present issues despite being affected by them. Favouritism and bureaucracy directly observed on the floor and with daily workload.

The nurses, RT'S, doctors and professionals are well trained. Nurses are METICULOUS  and very skilled. High pressure to be organized, up to date and perform well. I have no complaints about the level of care provided by the team. Very clean and stellar unit with +++ teaching and certification courses provided. 

The only downside is a common one for nursing in Montreal, toxic work culture. Some colleagues may be highly judgemental and criticize you without cause. Sometimes because another nurse's way of work is different. Most often, the nurse making complaints is dissatisfied in her own life. The feeling of others in "cliques" and occasional "catty" behaviour can be highly uncomfortable. 

It is always recommended in any nursing job, to do your best, always be respectful and always have proof of what you do to avoid any drama or miscommunication. 

The hospital is under heavy budget cuts and it takes a toll on support staff. There are layoffs, forced early retirements, demotions and more. We can't even order letterheads for the Doctors anymore because they are too expensive. We cannot send mail to other doctors, fax only, to save on stamps. Pay is capped and there is nowhere to be promoted to when you are an administrative assistant, only nurses. Management comes from outside of the hospital and did not grow within. All of the clinics are overbooked, there are more patients than doctors and everyone ends up working through lunches and overtime even though we are not paid for the lunch hour and not allowed to clock overtime. Salaries are pre-determined and you can never receive a raise, only a few cents each year due to inflation.

I worked as a housekeeper years ago. 
Pros: Good Pay. Unionized. Two 30 to 45 minute breaks. Paid sick days. Honestly, not a hard job if anything this was the easiest job I had ever had in my life. 

Cons: Because it is unionized, it attracts ALOT of lazy people since they know they wont get fired. Alot of people doing the bare minimum or disappearing for an hour when it isnt break time. If you are a newbie, some coworkers will try to intimidate you into doing their job. Some coworkers tend to be rude and this job attracts very ghetto people. Some of them are just grumpy & have lost their spark & are not a joy to be around. I would too if I was cleaning poo my whole life. 

Overall, an easy job if you want to make fast money and save up, but I dont recommend staying in this department since it attracts questionable characters. 

They hire practically anyone who moves. It's a lot of team work and if youre stuck working with lazy people then you'll do more work. "Not my job" seems to be everyone's motto. People getting injured due to lack of training by the management and workers are blamed for their injuries. Most people who speak out about the working condition seems to get in trouble with the management and the HR. Some workers actually quit and decided to work in a minimum wage job than to continue working there. Lots of favouritism. If they like you and have a connection from the inside, you get dibs on replacement and permanent positions. Union is equally useless. They are inefficient and have previously worked in management before. Avoid. Unless very desperate.

Nice place to work. Salary is good.
The surgeons are kind and really listen to you, the specialists really get to know you and keep in touch and the nurses are kind, one even shared her orange with me as I almost passed out after a round of very long and brutal tests. Sometimes finding your pavilion can be a bit of a maze, but the signage does seem to be slowly improving. I got some blood work done here last week and I packed a book as I figured that I would be in there for hours. I walked in and before I even grabbed my number they took my hospital and health cards and sent me to the waiting area. I was in and out within 15 minutes during the middle of the day, incredible. I have been to some of the other hospitals and none of them come even close to the knowledge and care at the Jewish General.

Administrative place not well managed 
for the employees, difficult place to take your breaks too much work!!!  Fast past and easy to make mistakes.  Too many patients, not enough staff often.
Not enough PAB’S or BA’S….! 
The families are kings and the Staff is not important….!   Meaning, even if we are disrespected by families the hospital will always side with the families.  Not a safe environment…!  Can be verbally and physically abused! 
In some departments bullying is right of passage and nothing is done to prevent it! 


Positive points:  Great hospital to learn under mostly great doctors!  Very advance equipment & learning tools! Multicultural hospital and holistic approach taken with patients and their families.
