Laurus Summer Camp

Awful place to work. Management was always disorganized, and there was often a shortage of counselors after management when on a firing spree. The shortage of staff resulted in inconsistent where I would sometimes show up to work at 8am and sometimes at 11am. The staff shortage also meant that counselors from different age groups were thrown around without prior notice. 

While management did encourage its staff to talk about problems it often fell on deaf ears. At the location I worked at there was also a gender bias where management would overlook male coworkers habits of being on their phones all days or not supervising the children. I often found male coworkers chatting with management while their female coworkers watched over the children, which was problamatic since there would only be around 4 counselors manageming groups of up to 30 kids and keeping in mind most of the counselors are teenagers. Female coworkers were often reprimanded for doing their jobs and i often found them crying from the sheer stress of having to do so much, some even quiting due to the unfair conditions. 

There was also always a shortage of supplies for some of the classes forcing counselors to improvise or change the activity all together. 

Overall I would not recommend working here the company expects too much of you and for such a low salary.

I enjoyed working at Laurus Summer Camp mostly because a lot of foreigners attended the camp. I was able to learn about new cultures and the co-workers were all very friendly and welcoming. The only downside is that they don't bring the kids on outings, it's a very repetitive schedule that bores my mind! The most that the kids did when I worked there was go to the field and play and then have animators spray them with water! I loved all their theme days, and smoothies at the end of the day and the way the camp really likes involving the kids in everything. It's a very good camp, I recommend and encourage all parents to let their child try a session with them if you don't mind your kid(s) not getting out and exploring what Montreal has to offer.

Working at Laurus Summer Camp has been an incredible experience, especially under new and supportive management. The positive changes have created a more organized and efficient environment, contributing to a fantastic atmosphere.

A typical day at work was animating and assessing the needs of the children in my care. We always had our coworkers to lean on, and the directors were very kind and a joy to talk to. Events were organized so we may bond and we became a family. I learnt many skills during my time as a camp counselor such as leadership skills, small animating tricks, patience etc. It was my first job and it was an amazing experience, even through the halfway mark of the summer when I felt drained of energy compared to the first day, I was always happy to see my amazing coworkers and the kids in my care.

Laurus is definitely a great learning curve for adolescents new to working summer jobs and it's a bonus if you enjoy being around kids and having fun with them. The pay is not worth it for just how much they make you do. Sounds easy on paper but it's harder than meets the eye. You'll lose all your energy quickly after a few weeks in there. Be careful which location you apply to because so many overhire then cut the hours of the counsellors there or fire them in short notice halfway through the summer. If you don't enjoy working with kids then find yourself another job. 

I loved my co-workers here. All of them were capable and good with kids. The expectations from a counselor are too much. Little to no activities are planned for campers, and most of the time counselors are expected to run overplayed games (like tag, bulldog). Management changes up positions/shifts on a whim, with no prior notification. The location I worked at was severely understaffed. They advertise a 5:1 camper to counselor ratio, but in reality, it goes up to 8:1 and even 10:1

This was the worst camp I've worked at. They promise you a lot of things and never actually do what they promised. On their website that you get career advancement opportunities. This is a huge lie. If you don't know someone on the management team, it is almost impossible to get a promotion. On the other hand, they expect their counsellors to come up with everything without any support. 

I have worked for Laurus day camp for 3 years. I have met some of my best friends through this job and have made countless memories at work. They have trust in their counsellors which allowed us to use our own ideas and really have as much fun as we could with the job. They also have great opportunities for promotions if you work hard, which is a great incentive to return year after year!

Our days were always really fun and exciting, each week we had a different theme which allowed our days to be quite different. We took the kids outside every day so we were able to enjoy the outdoors and getting lots of fresh air.
I felt extremely supported by my Regional Manager as well as the HR team. I would highly recommend working at Laurus.
