Lighthouse Supported Living

Worked at The Lighthouse for a few years. It’s a very rewarding place to work. It has its challenges too, but the managers and staff care about clients and are always trying to improve. 

Salary isn’t the highest as it’s a non-profit, but most people don’t work there for the money, you work there because you care. They’ve expanded a lot in recent years, with more programs on-site, and have been trying to improve processes too. 

It was a great place to work, and I’d recommend it to anyone.

I learned to be flexible and take one day at a time. I learned to collaborate with others and support colleagues. 
I learned some of the limitations of the type of work that we do 
I no longer am employed there 
The most enjoyable part was daily feeling part of something bigger than oneself and giving back to the community

The management and staff are awesome. 👏

The environment is fast paced. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment and culture is friendly. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
The day is very good. I  always look forward to working with the people at the lighthouse.

The company was good to work with then change in management has left staff in a position where abuse is 100% acceptable. It's not just about the stress of the clients but management does a tremendous amount of micro management now. It's become an environment where staff safety is only secondary, and if you become someone that can't be controlled they get rid of you for doing your job. This can be said for frontline support positions.

I landed in Canada from Scotland Jan 2019 and started at the Lighthouse Feb 2019 and didn’t look back, was welcomed by everyone and had the best work experience a new comer to Canada 🇨🇦 could hope for. I highly recommend everyone has an experience of working with the most vulnerable in society, it’s a very humbling experience. 

- Being present for the clients if they need someone to speak to.  I learned a lot from the manager I work under as he is very well educated.  The hardest part of my job is when we have to evict someone from the program for non compliance.  The most enjoyable part of my job is when I see a client move out into independence and they come back to share there success with me.

Facing with diverse situations everyday and trying to solve them as much as you can. Supporting residents with their daily life activities. Helping them achieve their goals in life. If we are able to help them move away from drug related issues that is a plus for us and will celebrate that

Excellent staff relationships. Lots of opportunity to work within different parts of the building, never "siloed". Take the time to understand social issues in Saskatoon and the prevalence of substance use and poverty in the downtown area.

The Lighthouse recently expanded and I'm just not a fit anymore. Learned a lot. The co workers were great, but the hardest part was watching everyone pass me after I put in the most time there. I feel like I was used.

Used to love working there but it went downhill. No longer care about the clients like they used to. Fast-paced, stressful, lots of burnout. A lot of staff and managers do the best they can, but not supported by board of directors.
