Never have I experienced such rude and unhelpful staff. Even at my high school part-time job at McDonalds I received better training then at Lutherwood. The training is insufficient, and when asking a more experienced worker for help they are very unapproachable and extremely rude. The management and senior workers all gossip about each other, and it's just a negative work environment. The senior staff seems to pick on the younger girls who don't involve themselves in the gossip. There are a few lovely kitchen staff that only work rarely, but the majority of the staff that works on a regular basis are the extremely rude ones. I was once yelled at infront of residents for not doing something that I was never trained to do, I didn't give attitude or anything I just simply didn't know it was a procedure. Some residents require to have nurses take them back to their room but being a new staff member that hasn't been suficently trained I did not know that nor did I know that some residents need a certain type of juice Immediately when they come down to have with their meds which I would haven known if I was properly trained. The experienced servers go back in the kitchen and eat their meals once their sections are done but never help out the new servers that are struggling to finish their sections. It's just not a place that I would suggest working at, It's not a positive enviornment and the workers seem to forget that their job is to serve the residents, that's the main goal.

work in retirement-LVP and cant say I'm impressed. middle management is mostly good, but the problems are at the top. been here a while and you really started to see some bad changes the past two-ish years basically. there have been some really weird decisions made from the top, some people were let go in middle management that kinda changed everything, leading to even more people leaving. 'culture' is shot and that's only been more clear in the pandemic. the egos of our 'top leaders' have ruined the place. I like my coworkers, and theres some decent/average pay. typical day is pretty chaotic, but we somehow get the job done for the residents. agree with one of the other reviews about people walking on egg shells, especially around the top brass. it gets pretty frustrating when theyre always talking about the lutherwood culture etc when it's clear it doesnt make its way to retirement. people want to leave but are stuck here with the vacation they give, would be hard to start over. plenty of work politics and when they get rid of really good mgmt and replace with meh kinda takes the whole point out of it doesnt it? if you're just starting, I would avoid until there are changes at the top.

Have worked at Lutherwood (Retirement-Luther Village on the Park) for quite a number of years. It was a pretty great place to work, up until the last 2-3 years. New Top Management came in and changed everything...mostly the culture. This used to be a place that you felt great to work at and felt supported as a worker - now, it's the opposite. People walk on egg shells. Be careful if you work here - don't get on top management's bad side, or you will be gone, there are numerous examples of this. Point blank. Also be prepared to work short across all departments and have zero management presence until they appear to tell you what you're doing wrong even though they don't know any of the details of what's actually going on. Don't worry though, they will bring in outside food every 6 months which is supposed to make everything much better. The positives: decent pay, plenty of vacation time, the residents can be great, and benefits. Just keep in mind: what they want is people that keep their head down, shut their mouths and work mindlessly, ignoring the glaring gaps and lack of culture. Just be careful - be careful, that's my advice. 

How would I describe a typical day? Chaotic, disorganized, often scheduled short or mistakes made. Management? Some managers try hard and you see them - kitchen manager for sure, others you never see them and the directors - you see them get coffee sometimes? Culture: suppressed? Had a meeting once where we were asked how our anonymous bad feedback on culture made us feel? A director ran that one. People aren't going to be open, because they're scared. Been here four years, so many people have 'disappeared' - no explanation, but we know. Hardest part of the job is just dealing with the politics/culture. Best part: my coworkers, and the residents. Can't see myself being here long. 

I would encourage you to carefully consider your decision before moving forward. While the opportunity might seem appealing, it’s important to be mindful of the work environment. The Program Manager has a reputation for showing favoritism and, unfortunately, has been known to treat some team members differently, in ways that have raised concerns about potential bias. Given her unconventional path into management—from hospitality to this role without a formal social work background—there have been challenges in how leadership is exercised. I just want you to be aware so you can make the best decision for your career.


Youth worker in a youth shelter for the Waterloo region. Completed intakes, medication intakes and discharges at appropriate times. Facilitated appropriate programs based on client strengths and needs. Kept in contact with third party individuals to create an approach plan to reach client and family goals for discharge meetings. Offered 1:1 couselling sessions with client and families. Provided support to staff members,clients and family members when needed. Completed all necessary paperwork needed at time of intake and discharge.

The typical day at work is I would say you are your own boss.you feel responsible for your job and action on your duty. I learned a very good customer service, good work habit ,managing priorities in a responsible manner. workers are heard via their supervisor's voice. It  is a place where the diversity counts and makes substantial effect because of equal right.the hardest part of the job is time management when an expected happens while on duty. the most enjoyable part is when the team members do the shift exchange and sharing each others experience and sharing ideas.

What is the best part of working at the company?
The team work. I had the best team and an understanding supervisor.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The clients and helping them manage their habits that create mental health problems.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The environment was condusive.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I no longer work there. But a typical day was morning meeting then off to the field.

A typical WFH day would consist of quickly logging into the company server, followed by praying to the wifi gods that I won't get kicked off the server.  Emails are always No. 1- no matter what - and you're always accepting of projects for "Growth".  Even though you struggle with your core workload.  I loved my team until Covid hit and WFH was strictly implemented.  Now it's a place of survival - look out for yourself.

Best part of working at Lutherwood is the people. Work feels meaningful, and the agency overall does prioritize a healthy work environment. However, management can feel very passive and not helpful in addressing workplace issues that arise. It's great to feel "heard" and valued, but less so when no solutions are offered. Low salary and no career development.
