Old Yale Brewing

This is the first job I’ve had where everyone is good friends, and I mean front of house and back of house, which can be rare in the restaurant industry. The work environment is so fun and everyone is incredibly encouraging. I feel like I’m being set up for success with my team and that there is room to grow as well. Even when there is a more difficult shift I never leave work upset because the team is so supportive. If there is ever an issue it is resolved quickly, as communication is always encouraged. Hard work never goes unnoticed by management and other staff members, as we can give shoutouts on our board in the staff room or the group chat!
Every other Tuesday there is an optional beer tasting class in the morning. This helps the staff better understand the beer making process, the differences between beers and about what’s new on our taps! 
There is always something cool going on whether it be trivia, live music, sports events etc. 
We even had a mental health week where we had a couple activities everyday, that were optional, that showed different ways to help/improve your mental health. I participated in the yoga and cooking class but there were a handful of other cool activities too! 
Around the holidays we had a movie night at a local theatre and now we’re about to start our soft ball season!! There is truly always something fun happening for the staff to take part in. 
Any cons to do with the job aren’t specific to OYB and are more about the restaurant/serving industry, like being cut earlier than expected or January being slow.  

OYB was a mediocre job. Most of the staff were lovely people, but there was unnecessary problems between staff due to competitive service and competitive tipping. The overall vibes of the establishment were contradicting, and it is felt amongst staff and customers. The teamwork mindset didn't really show because of the competition between staff, even though they framed it as a priority. There was unnecessary complaining and competition which sometimes ruined an otherwise fine job. Everybody was working really hard so it was disappointing to see the competitive atmosphere. Definitely more of a focus on the restaurant and food priority then the beer and beverages. The managers worked really hard to smoothen out the kinks of a new facility and overall the management is listening and willing to converse with staff and patrons on what is working and what isn't. Overall not the worst job, and definitely have had some fun shifts. Lots of fun people and everyone works hard, just wish the tipping system helped motivate the team to work together and not against each other. 

Long days with below industry standard pay. No commission, minimal bonus structure only, so no reprieve there, either. The people who work at the brewery are nice, but their upper management team who really runs the business over at the parent company don't care about the people at all and will let anyone go if they think for even a second it would enhance profits by a nickel. They've been through 3 sales reps in about a year and even fired the company founder/original brew master, so they're loyal to no one.

All in all, a good place to gain some craft beer experience, but don't expect to stick around long.

The position I had left zero room for advancement despite being entry level, my department was constantly an after thought and I was constantly being treated poorly by the general manager. You're expected to do work beyond your pay grade and when you aren't, you're doing nothing. I was expected to run a department as someone who had been there for a few months because management of the department changed hands and the general manager had no care to take the time to learn how to run it. The best part of the job is the other employees, but if you're working alone then there isn't that much if a good part to it. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
The fellow colleagues. Really the only good thing is the ppl that work along side you.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Upper management has no problems being a high turnover big mega corporate business. If you have any op io  that dosent align with the gm your hooped.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Dont ever expect any sort of career advancement. The agm mya gets her fam and friends promoted without experience or being fit for the roles. Managment is super lazy and receives a large tip out with little to no help ever.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
 Nepatisim, harrd work no team to help with usual duties like a busser host .manager etc.  Do you  need a manager, good luck finding one.

I love my job here. The staff is amazing, managers are kind. Everyone is genuinely really good friends and I love it. There's always fun events planned, like weekly trivia. I've  never been upset after a shift no matter how hard it was just because of how supportive everyone is. My only complaints is over 2 things. Sometimes scheduling seems a little unfair or inconsistent. And many people feel as if the way tipouts are sorted are unfair, and tips never seem to make sense. Between person to person one could make way more than you when you've worked the same shifts. 
Though in my opinion these 2 things are more on the minor side and isn't a make or break. I absolutely adore my job here.

Old Yale Brewing is the place that makes me feel lucky to go into work every day. I've found a lot of like-minded individuals who are so genuine, caring, supportive, amazing and driven. These folks are dedicated and extremely passionate about what they do within their community. 

There's a lot of opportunity for career advancement if you put your mind to it and work hard. Management understands the true definition of a balanced work-lifestyle and encourages it all the time. 

Good place to work a couple shifts a week, but if you are looking for full time go somewhere else. Management is disorganized and dishonest about amounts of shifts and reasons behind them. If you enjoy the high school clique type culture, there is no shortage of that here. Management picks who to support and who not to, so beware of that when you get hired. I don't think the issues with management is an intentional thing on the individual persons part, it's just a bi-product of the "we're all close friends" culture they promote.

Good front-line staff, terrible leadership, and a culture that trickles down from the top. 

-Was accused of stealing. 
-Passed up for an interview because I was a male.
-Other departments would actively talk behind the front of house staff's back. (other would then engage as well)
-Owner and operator virtually a ghost in his own business.
-Owners don't tip
-Office staff would order lunch ahead of lines of customers and also not tip.
-An extremely unaware group of owners/operators 

Find a different place to work.

They pride themselves on caring for your mental health, yet the treatment you see staff receive from management tells a different story. This place has gone severely downhill since they fired half of their employees for no reason and are now stuck with a terrible work environment they can’t get out of. It’s really too bad because I had a lot of great times there and made a lot of really good friends but I don’t know anyone who would want to be a part of something with that type of work environment.
