Postmedia is Canada's largest news media chain, and also perhaps the one least interested in serving its stated purpose of informing the public through high-quality journalism. In recent years, it has bought dozens of local news publications, shut many of them down, downsized many others, and centralized editorial control over most. Some major Canadian markets (Calgary and Edmonton, Vancouver, Ottawa) now only have Postmedia daily newspapers, and many of those now share their newsrooms. Content is largely shared network-wide with fewer and fewer exceptions. Local and/or investigative reporting is next to nonexistent and upper management has frequently interfered with editorial boards in the service of endorsing Conservative politicians during elections.

On a personal level, there's very little care for career advancement. Top execs are largely disinterested in the concerns of the rank-and-file, few of whom are either rewarded for good work or called out for the opposite. Few opportunities for advancement or salary negotiation exist. When I was there, a merit increase program was eventually taken over by upper management and divvied out without any input from managers.

All the while, there was ongoing anxiety about the company's future. Each quarterly report was worse than the previous one, except when the losses were offset by "savings" (layoffs). Morale was low for years, breeding an employee culture that was at once fatalistic and cynical, while still trying to maintain enough passion and pride to continue to produce good work (which many still did).

A typical day at work at Postmedia, would include getting to work on time, reviewing my daily responsibilities and what the workload would be like and managing my day around it. I learned many things while working at Postmedia but the most important would be multitasking, at the Computer Operator position it was extremely important to multitask as the workload was sometimes really light and sometimes really heavy with multiple important tasks going at the same time. Management was most often easy to deal with as it was family first culture, and employees were treated with dignity and respect.  Workplace culture at Postmedia was great, everybody helped each other and treated everyone as a family member.  The hardest part of the job was when we would have emergencies that would threaten the morning papers going out, but it was also the most rewarding when you would work through failing systems and meet deadlines. The most enjoyable part of the job was the people I worked with as they became family too me, it was definitely hard to say good-bye after so many years.

I would go in greeting some of the guys already at their desk and sit in mine. I would start by readings emails of what it is they want in their paper for that day. Local sports scores would also be emailed to me throughout the night. I would then find the page numbers i would be working on and open them in Indesign. I would load styles, and start transfering information over from a wire server we use. As the night goes on, i would be updating scores, putting in box scores and other various stuff. We are lucky enough to be able to watch a game as well, with tv's hanging off the wall. in the sports department, there is usually about 8 of us. All great guys. Always a fun atmosphere to be their, sometimes even on a bad day, i'd rather be at work

What is the best part of working at the company?
Managed my own schedule and routes, as long as papers were delivered by 7:00am, papers arrived on time and undamaged that's what mattered.


What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Waiting for our bulk delivery,  especially if there was a problem with the printing process. Weather was also a huge issue during the winter as I did alot of very rural areas, unloved or washed out roads.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
I worked alone I my car, so I didn't have contact with anyone else. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I picked up my paper bundles at midnight from the main delivery truck  then sorted my papers, read my statistics sheet and went out to deliver.

Local managers responsible for tasks and areas outside the purview of their job descriptions, yet compensation did not reflect the effort required, especially considering the amount of multitasking and problem-solving expected on a daily basis. Support was minimal, and it often felt like departments were working in silos, leading to inefficiencies and duplicated efforts.
Morale was generally low, and high turnover made it difficult to build momentum or implement long-term improvements. Overall, Postmedia is more focused on cutting costs than building a strong, motivated team. Would not recommend for anyone looking for a stable, supportive, or growth-oriented work environment.

unfair treatment — avoid this place

Worked here part-time and got targeted by a power-tripping supervisor who clearly didn’t like me from day one. No proper training, no professionalism — just attitude and blame games. After getting sent home early without a reason, they stopped scheduling me and completely ghosted me. No warning, no respect, nothing.

If you’re not one of their favorites, they’ll treat you like you’re disposable. Management doesn’t bother checking facts — they just let people with ego issues run the place. I had another full-time job, so I didn’t care, but this kind of place doesn’t deserve hardworking people. Stay away unless you enjoy getting disrespected.

I loved the different projects and endless creativity I had to use each day. 

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The industry is struggling, not much work anymore and before this it was so busy, you had to be fast. It could be very stressful with such fast turn arounds and deadlines. 

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Pretty good. The pay was not great though. And no raises for over a decade.

lots of different projects, design, all day, every day, for years.

My Job there was to help my Tech manager and Project manager. I was writing code using ASP.NET , C#, XML and XSLT, testing web pages, researching about new languages Where as with my project manager I attended daily and weekly meeting, conference calls, writing report and metrics reports. I handled service tickets with my project manager and maintaining the record of the status of ongoing, finished projects as well as upcoming project

What is the best part of working at the company?
You are independent. Go pick up your packages and deliver them. You meet a lot of great people along the way.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
When the map pins in the wrong location and you are new to the area.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
Usual great. Always fast responses from your team members.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Up early, pick up packages and deliver them. The rest of the day is yours to do whatever you want.

Continual layoffs, increased workloads, no wage increases and very poor staff moral. Postmedia has managed to acquire over 90% of the English Canadian media titles and is systematically trying to run them on singular platforms from content to staffing to management as they continually decrease their investment into all divisions. This is causing a very negative work environment and the business itself is eroding quickly.
