Management have a severe disconnect from front line staff. All employees are just numbers and are treated as such. Management tries to bully staff in similar ways they would inmates. 

Poor morale due to poor leadership skills from supervisors and senior management. 

Lots of gossip and can be a toxic work environment. 

Corrections has a high rate of PTSD. MB government recently had a study into mental health in corrections and how they treat staff. The government got a very bad report back. 

The MGEU is a weak union and does not properly represent correctional staff needs as the MGEU caters to other workers in the civil service. 

Stress and mental health issues are very common in this career and the support and training to prepare you for it is minimal. EAFP is provided but the quality of councilors are very poor. Most staff will not return to see councilors at EAFP due to poor experience. Staff ends up seeking help from a private counselor service or from the bottom of a alcohol bottle. 

Job security used to be good. But with the conservative government manipulating prison numbers with the courts giving out more promises to appears to dangerous offenders, probations not breaching inmates, etc... inmate numbers are low and the province has started closing units. No staff has been laid off as of yet but that's because they put you in the part time pool so you will be on call 24/7. 

You dont start out fulltime permanent but you are put in the part time pool on call 24/7 where you will sit by your phone for the next 7 years plus until a full time spot is available. 

Majority of corrections officers would leave the job instantly if they could find s close paying job. But they are trapped as you only require a GED to be a CO. Staff will start and be paid 26hr.... after 5 years goes up to 34hr. Staff get themselves trapped in the job by making large purchases that they have to pay off. Unfortunately you dont realize how toxic the work environment is for you until about 1 or 2 years... so then your stuck.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
For me, the most stressful part of the job occurs when priorities shift suddenly due to external factors, like a key team member leaving during a critical project. When this happens, I don't let the pressure dictate my emotions; instead, I immediately reassess and reprioritize. I sit down with the remaining team to redistribute tasks based on individual strengths and use project management tools to track new milestones. For example, in my present role, this approach allowed us to complete a high-priority audit two days early despite being short-staffed.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
We always emphasize team effort and regular communication which enables us to reappraise  procedures and make recommendations to IT to enhance the performance of the online interface with applicants 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
I start with morning huddle with the team, report on the productivity for the last day. After this, I check my mail and my in-progress applications and review them. I also reply the mails, ensuring that the applicants understand the short comings in their applications. This helps conclude and approve the applications in a timely manner

I was expected to be Impartial, do not impose personal judgment and expectation on family or care recipient. 
I was expected to Respect family lifestyle and choices regarding religious, cultural and nutritional preferences for client. 
I was expected to understand and put into practice CRS policies and procedures, and follow Workplace Health and Safety plan including the Working Alone plan

The ground level employees are more competent, hard working , professional and usually put more actual work than is compensated for.

Benefits are top notch.

While I have had good managers, i get the feeling the upper managment makes them leave their positions in disgust. Good managers leave after a couple years, and poor manangers stick around for a long time. One can use their own judgment as to the cause of this phenomenon. 
Management  and upper political "bosses" are degrading, rigid and will not help you or assist you in succeeding at your job. 

Red tape and micro-management , as well as favoritism and gossip are bad at this current time, where I was once employed. People come and go so it might not always be that way.

Mixed feelings as negative aspects outweighed postives, but loved other aspects of the job. I can only speak about my department and my time there

This is a great job if you are friends with, sleeping with, or related to management, otherwise you are bullied and treated as less than a number. You start part time on call and expect to stay that way for 7+ years, despite them telling you it will be 3 or so. Expect the worst shift rotations for possibly your entire career unless you are “in” with management. Seniority means nothing and the MGEU does not care about you, only padding their own wallets. Promotions mostly happen due to nepotism.
People get stuck here due to lack of any other education or transferable skills. It seems okay for the first couple of years. Mental health issues and addictions are rampant. 
Please consider any other career. 

A typical day at work involves being around the same team I've worked with for the most part for my 13 years in the organization.  We develop together.  There is a wonderful team spirit.  The hardest part of my job is telling people we can't try out their great ideas because (insert reason here, usually budget concerns).  The best part of my job is knowing as soon as I get up in the morning that I get to spend my day with a cheerful group of dedicated public servants.  Also, it's great to know I'll learn something new this day.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The ending of my marriage because of not being home enough, working out of town too much, 5 days per week.

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The work environment and culture are respectable. Top ranking management care about employees under them and make sure they get what they need to do the work in the best way possible.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
To start off each day, all vehicles are fuelled up and checked over from bumper-to-bumper. Supplies are gathered for the job at hand.

I enjoyed working with the Province of Manitoba for approximately 21 years.
I started as an Institutional Supervisor, worked my way up to a Behavioural Counsellor and then moved to the financial end of my department learning the financial program that the Province of Manitoba uses to this day. In the end was able to train new staff in the program.
I didn't find any of the jobs hard once I got used to it.
As an institutional supervisor I worked the night shift and then as a behavioural counsellor I worked the evening shift and once these programs were closed by the government I worked the dayshift.

Community better informed on mental health issues of OC’s.  Know occupation stress injuries and how to care for yourself prior to starting. This job doesnt provide adequate services for staff. It can be a good job if are willing to take initiative and expect nothing in return. You do it for you. SUO’s and above is pretty elite. Lots of back stabbing to climb ranks. Cherry picking is very common.  Organization pits staff against each other.  Part time on call work is the first indicator of what you’re in for.  Toxic workplace. 


Can be a fun place to work. For the most part the co-workers are easy to get a long with. As a security guard. Get to see the insides of a few historic buildings, and learn about them. Which is interesting. 
But when starting off as a casual/part time worker.  There is very little chance to move into a full time position. 
The only way to get a full time position, is to be related to some one in management. Or good friends, with supervisors. 
Management, is aware of this but just ignores it. As they do with most issues that happen with the employees.
