FunctionAbility is truly a fantastic place to work! Having come from working in the hospital, I felt very used to being treated as just another number/employee, but coming into this company really opened my eyes to how much some companies genuinely care for every single one of their employees no matter what. I have been shown incredible training and continued support by all managers since joining the company, and have even gotten to learn from one of the owners herself, which was such a treat. The SLP supervisor and Ottawa regional director are both such genuine individuals, and I can really get along with both of them on a personal level, beyond just the scope of work itself. I thought that it may be harder to be in a community role when I first started, because you do not get to really share a common workspace with other clinicians regularly, but somehow, we are all still so connected to one another, and FunctionAbility puts such an effort to ensure that is the case by funding monthly meetups for fun, as well as different events in the office. I love each and every single one of my colleagues so much, and they all have a special place in my heart. The client work that we do here is also so meaningful, and the clients we see for the most part are really great, and so appreciative of us coming into the home and being able to help them with functional daily activities. You can really feel and see a difference that you can make with these clients, and that is one of the most gratifying things, plus being able to build those long-term relationships is just invaluable. I am so grateful to be part of such a company like this, where even though there are probably over 200 employees in total, somehow, each and every single person feels so special and valued. The flexibility/autonomy of the job is definitely another pro here- you can make your own schedule and have a say in how many clients you are seeing at any given time, you do not need to tell a manager when you are sick or request vacation time (with potential it gets denied) so long as your clients know, and that you manage your schedule accordingly. All of these benefits really do outweigh some of the difficulties one may think of when first jumping into community work, such as the billing per hour, or the fact that there is no pension plan or included benefits or EI top up etc... Highly recommend this company to anybody looking for a good change in their career, a better work-life balance, and understanding supervisors. I worked for this organization for several years and truly believed in what it stood for in the beginning. There was a time when it felt like a collaborative, supportive environment where clinicians were valued and respected. Unfortunately, over the past few years, the culture has shifted dramatically.

While the company still promotes flexibility and autonomy, and those are genuine positives , they come at a cost. The focus has become increasingly profit-driven, and integrity and accountability have suffered as a result. Leadership decisions often lack transparency, and the CEO and upper management no longer seem connected to the clinicians who are actually doing the work.

What I found most disappointing was the complete lack of recognition for long-serving staff. I’ve never worked anywhere where someone’s years of dedication go entirely unnoticed. When experienced therapists move on, there’s no acknowledgement, no communication, not even a simple thank-you. After I left, colleagues reached out months later shocked to learn I was gone — which says a lot about how little internal communication there is.

Turnover is extremely high, and in the past few years, many seasoned therapists have left. New graduates bring energy, but without experienced mentors, the overall quality of service and team support suffers.

If you’re considering this company, know that the flexibility can be appealing, but it comes with instability, lack of recognition, and a leadership culture that doesn’t reflect the “family environment” they often promote.



Joining FunctionAbility is the best decision I ever made, career-wise.  I left the hospital setting due to crazy commute times and being tired of all the politics.  FunctionAbility has provided a place for me to hone my skills as an OT, as well as take on other roles to grow professionally and personally.  The flexibility of community work allows for greater work-life balance for my young family, and the work is always rewarding, though it can be challenging clinically!  As an OT, I love being able to work with clients from the earliest point of their injuries, at their lowest points, and then see them improve over months and years to achieve their functional goals within their new residual abilities.  The family-like culture of support is like no other, and nowhere else have I ever worked where management truly cares about us as individuals, while also seeking out constructive feedback to make FA even better.  The clinicians in all disciplines (OT, case management, SLP, SW, OTA/PTA/RA) are among the most brilliant I have met, and are all about team work.  I'm proud to be a part of team FA!

I have been working with FunctionAbility for many years and have found my home as a therapist. The most enjoyable part of the job is the long term holistic OT role with my clients. It is meaningful clinical contact with clients in their natural environment (community) that goes above and beyond home safety to address occupational performance goals. I like working with a practice that sets a high standard, shares best practices, and encourages me to be the best I can be. I am seeing a variety of clients from TBI, orthopedics, to mental health populations. I am also inspired by a supportive team of colleagues who are knowledgeable and leaders in the field. I feel safe and protected working with this team of therapists, and my skills have developed every year. The hardest part of the job is a steep learning curve in the first year.  A typical day is either on the road seeing clients in their homes, or working from home (or the Ottawa clinic) writing reports. Hospital visits for discharging clients are also monthly activities. The management team is very in tune and accessible, they are therapists just like us, they have our back and want us to succeed.

What is the best part of working at the company?
Flexibility
Autonomy to create your own schedule, but remember this comes at a cost. If you don’t work, you don’t get paid so I have found the work life balance to be more difficult for this kind of job versus a hospital job.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
The constant fluctuation of hours. (Hours = paycheck)
Maintaining a caseload within a reasonable driving distance of your home.
Never really being able to leave your work at work… You’re always thinking about it

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
This company really preaches a family style supportive environment. This may be the case for some people, but I personally found this job is isolating at times I found there were a lot of groups within the organization that had well established working relationships/friendships that were hard to infiltrate. 

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
As a rehab assistant, most of my day was spent on the road seeing clients. If you had cancellations, which unfortunately could happen quite frequently due to the nature of the work and the clientele you’re dealing with, you could lose pay but a typical day with be seeing two or three clients and trying to stay on top of your documentation each day.

I love working at FunctionAbility.  There is a strong culture of support and striving for excellence.  I feel proud to be part of this group that highly values education and best practices and is even accredited.  I love the education days they run, and all the resources offered.  The industry and processes are challenging and there is a huge diversity in client presentations - this can be overwhelming at first but is an amazing learning opportunity and there is tons of support from management and from colleagues.  Everyone helps each other out.  There is even funding to go out once per month with your colleagues.  There is lots of flexibility in terms of scheduling and caseload, but you also have to be responsible for managing your time and keeping things balanced for yourself.  This is also a learning curve, but well worth it!  And the yoga retreat in June was the best!! I wouldn't work for any other company in this industry - FunctionAbility stands out above and beyond the rest.

Community-based work that is dynamic, flexible and demands a high level of organization, planning and self-discipline. FunctionAbility is successful at offering the tools and resources which enable clinicians to collaborate effectively, share resources and feel supported. These factors also enable clinicians to provide consistent and high quality services. Equal emphasis is placed on caring for employees (promoting work-life balance and self-care) as well as on providing high end, consistent, reliable and client-centred care for persons throughout all stages of recovery. From an SLP perspective, the SLP Director has been successful over the past 8+ years at teaching, guiding, providing encouragement, advocating for and offering constructive feedback to clinicians. Other members of the FunctionAbility administrative and leadership team are also consistently responsive, approachable, patient and helpful at guiding clinicians through navigating many aspects of the Motor Vehicle Insurance industry.

A typical day at work involves the provision of assessment and treatment services to the pediatric population. As part of FunctionAbility Rehabilitation Services, I have gained the skills and competency to confidently provide intervention in the areas of Articulation, Fluency, and Voice within the context of a school setting. With the support and encouragement of my colleagues and supervisor, I have learned and feel comfortable to seek guidance when needed for both clinical and administrative tasks, and have come to consider many of my colleagues to be friends as well. The culture within FA is one of inclusiveness, respect, and one that constantly strives to share knowledge and resources to help each other and make each other better clinicians. Aside from making a difference in the lives of children, the best part of the job is feeling like I am part of a special team and family that I know I can always lean on for support both professionally and personally.

A typical day at FunctionAbility is dynamic and meaningful, filled with community-based sessions, collaboration with clinicians, and supporting clients toward their goals. I’ve learned so much about client-centered care, therapeutic communication, and adapting treatment plans creatively in real-world environments.

Management is supportive and approachable, and the workplace culture is genuinely encouraging people celebrate each other’s successes and step in to help when needed. The hardest part of the job is managing a full caseload while staying on top of reports, but it’s also taught me strong organization and time-management skills.

The most enjoyable part of the job is the relationships built with clients and colleagues, and the privilege of seeing clients grow in independence and confidence. Working with FA has helped me grow both professionally and personally.

I've been with FunctionAbility for over 5 years, and really respect and admire the owners and directors.  My work as an occupational therapist is clinically challenging and diverse, which I love.   Working mostly from my home office has given me the freedom to volunteer a bit and flex my hours around being a busy parent.  My supervisor is supportive and I feel like I'm always learning. I work hard and  I write a lot of reports, which for me isn't a bad thing (people actually value my opinion!). There's a big learning curve with the insurance/legal sector, but this got easier over time. There's some challenges with billable hours, but with experience and increased skills, I now earn well above what I ever would in the public sector.
