A typical day at work involved watering town trees on a given route (two people in a truck assigned to a route). The day began with the inspection of our 4*4 trucks and attached water trailers and filling out daily paperwork. Water tanks were refilled when empty by attaching to designated town fire hydrants. Some days also involved mulching young trees, tree planting, and the cutting down of dead trees. I learned how to properly plant and maintain the health of trees as well as how to operate a truck with attached trailer. Management was professional and efficient and provided excellent training. The hardest part of the job was ensuring to follow all proper road safety procedures when conducting a job from the side of the road. The most enjoyable part of the job was using my tree identification skills to map out trees to be watered within our route.

The Town of Oakville is an outstanding employer; I was fortunate enough to work at the satellite location - Central Operations, Roads and Work Department.  The staff was exceptional to work with and for, with no exception of the Crew supervisors and the crews themselves.  

Our administrative team consisted of the Roads and Works, Parks and Forestry Departments, along with the Traffic Department.  Our group of administrative clerks worked well together and supported each other.  

The salary was exceptional as well; being the public sector, you must appreciate the recognition of good employees and they are compensated favourable.

I would have hoped to have acquired long term employment with the Town of Oakville, but unfortunately my position was a contract position; however, my contract was extended twice because my supervisor believed in me and I was a valued employee.

Just another sexist, harassment and gossip infused municipality environment. I had an actual mental breakdown working for this corporation. Don't share your opinions or ideas, or work too hard because that is assumed you're stepping on the toes of the higher-ups. If you don't engage in gossip or hate the same people your Lead Hands hate than you're the new target. Don't expect your supervisors to have your back at all, they will throw you under the bus to make themselves look better. Being in a Union means nothing when you're seasonal. Even HR will turn against you and make your life miserable. The work is easy but the culture is suited for a certain personality type, one that you DON'T want to be, trust me. Bunch of greasy people and fully grown children. Do not recommend.

Working as a lifeguard for the town of Oakville was an excellent experience. There were many opportunities to continue to strengthen your skills and take on more responsibilities. The best part was the teamwork and team-building exercises that happened constantly throughout my employment. Being a lifeguard includes cleaning the pool, and changerooms, teach kids to swim, and guarding the pool during leisurely swims. All of my coworkers and I were generally the same age, so the environment was really fun and we became really close. The management are really open to communication if you have any concerns, since the job can get a little stressful at times, and that really helped me grow as a employee.

Excellent supportive workplace culture, interesting projects to work on and many opportunities to engage with the public.
There’s nothing more to say, no union to support the techs, so if a colleague wants to have you forests your gone. Being popular and winning the favour of the supervisors is more important than the actual job. I saw one staffer flirt their way to full time work. Be a friendly, diligent worker and hope that office politics don’t get in the way of your job or you will be dismissed without recourse.

At Glen Abbey Branch of OPL.  Not a very pleasant experience.  I wish I did my time at another calmer location.  It doesn't feel like a library environment and you feel harried all the time. 

A really busy branch to be working at. 
It is a position that takes time to learn all the tasks and to become well acquainted with your duties. 

No one stays in this role for more than 6 months at most before leaving. 

Personally I would apply at one of the other locations rather than this one as you probably wont stay long due to pressure from management and a badly run branch. 

Working as a volunteer for the Town of Oavkille was a fun, enlightening experience. The people were great but as volunteers, we had no place to relax. There was no "volunteer office," and, as a result, we just had to stand around and wait for instruction. However, once we were given an instructor to help, they were great people to work with, and they let you know how to help in the best way possible. Consistently able to get my hours when I asked, and thoroughly enjoyed my time there.

I mostly carried out assigned independent research tasks.

My research helped me develop my understanding of key techniques and strategies in my profession.

Supervisor is very friendly, gentle and warm. City leaders champion innovative and progressive ideas.

Despite their workload, Co-workers are more than happy to engage and educate me on their work and profession.

Hardest Part - Leaving. (co-op job)

Enjoyable Part - Being in an organization committed to progressive innovative public service.

Working for the Town of Oakville I learned responsibility and customer service skills that will follow me through the rest of my life. A typical day would include providing information and customer service in person, over the phone and by email to customers and residents of Oakville regarding Parking and By-Law issues; completing projects and research projects assigned by staff; data entry and other clerical duties; balancing money in and out at end of day; sorting and processing mail and any other duties assigned by employees.

I was a summer student there and let me tell you the department I worked for were the worst supervisors ever. Even other departments called the supervisors dumb and dumber. And if you do not know someone/related who works at the town like me they treat you like a piece of garbage and get a power trip of making students lives miserable. Awful place and I am so disappointed by this do not apply there unless you know someone because they will treat you like garbage and the students who do know people get treated with way more respect. Never going back.
