Tacofino

I worked as a bartender at Tacofino mostly focusing on prep of cocktail ingredients. I did the equivalent amount of work as a prep chef while also serving the bar and preparing drinks for customers. I was only paid minimum wage plus low tips. Most prep cooks make above minimum plus tips. 
Our management team had no front of house experience and had a huge lack of communication skills. Especially with new policies etc. 
tips were not distributed equally and managers would take a portion of tips when they weren’t helping out on the floor. Managers often were playing on their phones or hiding in the offices when they were needed on the floor. 
Any ideas or suggestions given by staff members were ignored or not considered in slightest. 
Tacofino was a great idea but now the company is stretched too thin and management is unable to effectively run all its locations. The staff work so hard and deserve better. 

Going back and reading about Tacofino's values on their website, I can honestly say that none of them were brought down to the employee level. It seems like on the outside that it would be this awesome amazing fun place to work but it is honestly average-below average. The owners wouldn't even speak to me if they came in, didn't introduce themselves to anyone, like what kind of high horse are you on that you can't say hi to one of your 20 employees? what kind of value is that? beyond that there were firings happening often instead of proper training, hoping they can just churn through people to find someone instead of building someone up (like in their values). Overall its a super simple job, tips are split 300 ways and are done just based on hours not on when you worked so if your a weekend worker when the place is actually selling anything then big middle finger to you.

A typical day at Tacofino consists of being overworked, under supported by managers, and  certainly under payed in tips as they tip out all their kitchen staff and managers an insanely high amount to make up for not paying anyone a decent wage.  Most of management at the location I worked at had never even worked in front of house positions before, and were extremely unprofessional and  unequipped to do their job.  Workplace culture was pretty great when I started but over the time I worked there it turned into a lot of unnecessary power tripping, drama and bullying, made worse by how unprofessionally managers dealt with these situations.  On top of all this the company cosplay at being accepting and caring, and may have been at one point, but the idea of creating a safe and accepting work place has fallen through the cracks

I've worked at Tacofino for two years and it has been one of my favorite cooking experiences yet.  Its a tight space and days are long but everyone is friends in and out of work.  We work 10 hour days so we can enjoy 3 day weekends camping and surfing.  the wages are great and daily tip out even better.  A free burrito to take home every night.  Not too much to complain about.. minutes walk from the beach.  Can i go on?

Management, specifically the restaurant Operator just sit in the computer from 10 to 6 and leaves the team in the middle of the rush, upper mangement celebrates that he is the only one that works 8 hours shifts. This while the rest of the team is stress, not trained at all, and older staff members have to do thier training joobs without any compensation

Tacofino has potential to be a great company but unfortunately upper management does not do a good job of communicating to the rest of the company. Very underpaid for the work you do. No opportunities for growth. No appreciation for staff and management. 

Glad I got to see it for myself, but it was a waste of time.

the hardest part of my this job was having a service on a food truck a lot of unexpected things happen. Most part building a company for 1 food truck to a company with multiple food truck and restaurants and become a stable in the city.

Great environment to work in. Team oriented with management being hands on and helping out. Fun company that takes care of their employees. Always busy and lots of opportunity for advancement.

Enjoyed working here, more a young adult crowd. Discounted food for employees. Plenty of nice staff members. Benefits for full time employees dental etc
