The MRG Group

The MRG Group ruins establishments. Completely changed a beloved restaurant into a scummy sports bar, and expected all employees to change with it. As a server, they don't care about or value your time whatsoever, and expect you to work long hours every day with no warning. You get a start time, no end, and people who work three hours may be able to leave before you even if you've been there eleven. Management is never helpful, do not respect your time off or your availability, and fire you for any comments or complaints. I was let go for "not being a good fit with where the company was going," simply because I did not want to work until 2AM every night (which was not even an option when I originally got hired, they changed their open hours). Though older coworkers were allowed to have stricter availability, the younger ones like me had to be ready to work at the drop of a hat, any day any time. As a first-year university student, that simply was not possible for me, as well, I wanted to maintain a life outside of work. At MRG, that doesn't exist. Only positives were most of my coworkers, who I adored. 

If you’re considering working at MRG, especially on the hospitality side, be cautious. The environment is overwhelmingly male dominated and can feel outright hostile at times. Leadership does little to foster a supportive or inclusive culture, focusing more on maintaining outdated power dynamics than genuinely supporting staff.

It’s not a place where your ideas, skills, or contributions will be recognized or rewarded. There are no benefits. Speaking up often leads nowhere, and personal growth or development isn’t a priority. Over time, it’s easy to feel isolated, undervalued, and overlooked.

I wouldn’t recommend this company to anyone looking for a respectful, inclusive, or empowering work environment within hospitality.

Great at first and supportive... then chaos when they lose management to overwork and underpay. They take too long to find replacements, so once again lean on and overwork more managers who are expected to be in too many places at once with unrealistic workloads and ever- changing computer systems with minimal to no training or notice. 

New West Coast upper management has quickly ruined the culture and individuality of a company that used to have integrity and loyal teams of staff who were like family. They were invested in the customer experience. Now they are constant, jack up prices, create cookie cutter culture and so on. Rome was not built in a day but it sure burned in a day in this case. Sad to see the ship burning but hopefully they wake up.  



Where do I start with this company?  I have never seen so much turnover in a company before whether people are voluntarily leaving on their own accord or being fired.  This should be a strong indication to the level of toxicity that permeates every single level of the company.   

Please be warned that if you work here your role is not safe and you should always have a backup plan, this is not long-term employment unless you have thick skin and can take the constant pressure to perform under misogny and lack of support. A lot of this comes from the people that they hire, mostly corporate backgrounds, they do not have the mentality of people before profit, it is in fact the other way around.     

The MRG Group- this company is extremely toxic and insidious.    You have been warned.   Avoid like Covid-19.

I have worked for MRG Group for awhile now and have had an insider's view to a lot of the happenings in-venue as a bartender and coat check person among other titles and event dependant.  I have watched managers with experience be treated less than human by upper management,  no one should fear their job when they speak back to the powers that be.   It's always their way or no way. Every single manager that I have spoken with or work alongside feel the same way but want to keep their jobs so do not have an opinion on anything.   I guess it's safer that way?   I would not recommend applying here, unless of course you are a professional in being agreeable and a yes person.

I was not too impressed with their structure... everyday you are expected to work past the scheduled time. They emphasize a team and healthy workplace but they are manipulative and guilt trip you for everything. It is a complete front for genuine, independent companies that care. They are a corporate, over-exerting pushing company. It's possible you make some decent money but you'll always be under-staffed and management has no emotional care for your well-being. Typical corporate structure. They have no problem forcing you to work overtime without proper compensation. They own you.. that is it.

At first the company seemed great. But as my time went on the layers peeled back and realized the company was filled with snakes, mostly upper management.
There were some great times and employees but for a company to have a complete overhaul and turn over of the entire management team within a year.. that has to say something about how the person is running the company.
If you cannot keep employees for more than a year from director level to hourly employees what does that really say about the man who makes the decisions? What does it say about how they treat their employees?

They will lure you in being nice at the stage of interview.

False scheduling promises are made for full time time hours which are not delivered. 

For example they had staff starting at 10pm on Fridays to close at 2am. Then work long shifts ok Saturday then nothing the rest of the week.

Gratuities are split evenly between day staff and night staff when there are basically no customers during the day. 

Supervisors are promoted from within which have very little experience. 

Very poor work culture as can be seen from the other reviews. 

Mrg abandoned its staff at the beginning of the pandemic. There was very little communication or transparency and then suddenly everyone was laid off. After that mrg severed all ties with staff and washed their hands of us. Updates or check ins by the company to its staff were never attempted. Now that things are reopening again, mrg has posted everyone’s jobs online without so much of a heads up or courtesy message saying “hey we’re planning to reopen, be on the lookout for job postings soon”. They’ve left everyone in the dark and it is not going unnoticed by the community. 

The biggest issue here is the security manager. He was constantly power-tripping, reminding everyone of his title, and speaking to staff in a condescending and rude way. It created a hostile work environment and made even simple tasks stressful. I would not recommend working here because of the management culture.
