I have been working at Thornhill for a little over two years, and thus far it has been a very positive experience for me. Initially what drew me to Thornhill was the fair pay, paid sick time and three weeks vacation to start. I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that this company has paid 30-minute breaks. I have worked for several childcare centers in the Calgary area, and this is the first time I was offered any paid break or sick days. 
When I was hired I was given an orientation and then paired up with a Primary staff who mentored me and was able to answer questions I had while in the classroom. This really helped me form connections with the staff and learn the routines of the classroom. 
Recently I was promoted from a float staff to a Primary, which provided me a raise and opportunities to collaborate with the Director and other team members. Because of the growth I’ve experienced at Thornhill I am excited for my future as an ECE! I have had some struggles over the past two years and I found the management team to be incredibly supportive. Some situations have been complicated to navigate but open communication with the Director and my teammates helped me build a support system that helped me grow. 


I enjoyed working here because of the families and the staff. They are all awesome. However, management is awful. Typical day will be welcoming the children, breakfast, small group activities, outdoor play, circle time, preparation for lunch, nap (or outdoor play if not napping), potty/diaper, snack time, small group activities. It's easy to work with children especially if you enjoy it. Hardest part of the job is dealing with the director and executive director. Director is a people pleaser, while the executive director is racist and snotty. Too hard to approach them. They act like everything is all your fault. When it comes to issues, they are ready to blame it all on you. The excuse they always use is "they are not aware" so the blame is put into the staff. They have a staff that have been in the company for years and even though they are aware of her wrongdoings, they looked the other way. Licensing was made aware of those things, and management blamed it on the other staff. They said "no one told them", even though other staff told the director not once, but several times. Director didn't do anything. She turned a blind eye. Executive director believed the director and blamed the staff instead. The staff who was not involved. They don't do staff evaluation, and they don't give salary raise even though the director mentioned that there are raises during interview. They only do evaluation when there is an issue that involves licensing. 

There’s too much politics in this organization. They can fire you if they feel that they can’t control you based on the story they want to play or character they want to portray. They can even make you look like the villain when you didn’t even do anything. Some parent made up a story and they fired me without any investigation. They don’t care about the things you did or have done for the children or the families as long as they can please the people they want to please. They don’t care if you’ve been an employee for a decade. The director is willing to throw you under the bus to save herself.. They say something different in front of the staff but they do the opposite. They may give you .25 cents increase but they will make sure you don’t forget that as if you owe them something. Not worth to stress yourself out for this place.

I had fun at work and really enjoyed being part of a team atmosphere.  The company supported me by encouraging me to take further education and upgrade my knowledge and skills.  I really enjoyed the workshops and planning meetings with my co-workers.

We supported high-needs children and that was probably the hardest part of my job, but also the most rewarding.  My Director challenged me to grow both as a person and in the profession.  

I was sad to leave, but my family and I are moving

A typical day at work is stressful and feels very unsupported. Even though it's an 8-hour shift, it often feels much longer due to the lack of help and proper guidance. Management is unprofessional and not supportive, which adds to the overall stress of the job. The workplace culture reflects this—it's unsupportive and can feel isolating at times. The hardest part of the job is definitely the lack of support; it feels like you're left to handle everything on your own. The most enjoyable part of the day is playing with the kids—they're the only thing that makes the job worthwhile.

As a day home consultant your work day is very full and busy. The team is incredibly supportive and professional.
Management is super organized and makes you feel welcome right from the start.
The hardest part of the job was having to leave it for personal matters.
The best part of the job was the people working in the organization, especially the Executive Director.

Great Team, Great Families, Great Centre.  There’re various opportunities to upgrade your knowledge.  The management is always helpful and understandable, always ready to discuss ideas and is always available and supportive.  We’re provide with ½ hour paid coffee break and an hour lunch.  

Great team atmosphere, very supportive workplace.

Really cares about the children and families.  Weekly team meetings with the director are helpful to share any concerns or issues.  Lots of professional development available and I was treated with respect.

Thornhill Child Care Society is a welcoming, inclusive environment to work in. Educators are encouraged to grow in and reflect on their professional practice.
Of course, working with children and families can be demanding and stressful at times, but I find TCCS leadership offers me support and guidance when needed.

I worked as a support staff and i didn't feel very welcomed in the centre street location. the director don't give me shifts and i always have to call and ask if there is a shift she can give me. The most enjoyable part of the job is being with children.
