Worked as a legal secretary here.  The firm is well-managed, run with a preciseness that I've yet to see in myriad other firms and services I've worked.  Culture is excellent. Staff are not necessarily included in the lawyer hierarchy but the staff are given their own perks and supports.  Lots of opportunity to learn and enjoy the work environment and grow as a team.  The big negative is that if you want to work up a mobile career ladder and you're not a lawyer , this may not be the place for you. If you're enjoying your secretarial role, go to Torys.

Everyone is friendly, higher-ups are distant. Regular hours, good location. Because of the big law firm nature, problem-solving is traditional and there are many constraints in place that slow down efficiency. Middle management is not consistently competent. Expectations are mostly clear. Negotiate your salary on the way in, raise structures are depressing.

Perform a wide variety of complex and highly confidential administrative and secretarial duties
Responsible for organizing, compiling and scheduling reviews for all partners (140+ in Toronto and New York)
Work under little supervision and perform duties that require considerable confidentiality, initiative and independent judgement

Torys, will welcome you to the real world of corporate culture. One of best law firms to work for as a first time experience,  to get your foot in the door. If you have plans to be a lawyer or clerk be prepared for people to turn on you, and get your self handed to you. HR pretends to support you, but really does not care. It is extremely political, and Team leads are HR's spy's. 

If you are looking to work here. Look elsewhere. They don’t treat the employees well especially the law clerks in the  litigation department and if you are from outside and not within the firm then you won’t be treated equally. A very toxic environment.

The firm itself is great to work for but I was in the IP department and the head partner of that department is the most awful person I have ever worked with.  The entire environment in the department is toxic and everyone is miserable.  I took another job making much less but am WAY happier.  The turnover within that department is very high.

IT team at Torys are filled with friendly and approachable individuals. 

Management is great and approachable. Just a good group of people here

Strong job security, Torys business is quite robust. 

Only downside is limited promotions, and I believe that has more to do with the smaller size teams and pace is slower.

There is a terrible partner that works in the Real Estate Department.  Stay away from this firm if that is the department you want to be in.  She will do anything to get you fired.   Very toxic environment.  

I was with this firm for 2 years and she handled things unprofessionally.  She gets away with murder.
