I couldn’t not recommend this employer more. They are run by a council that does not care about the concerns of their citizens they already make decisions before bringing it to the communities attention. The new mayor has been called out on lies. They do not know how to manage and the reason there is a new peace officer temporary posting is because they screwed themselves over by cutting a peace officer position. The town has an increased level of crime, along with being an attraction for homeless with the new shelter that is being made permanently. The town has become a not so nice place to live anymore unfortunately. Any peace officers reading this do not apply to work at this town, they are not a good employer and they will not appreciate you I warn you now. 

The Fire Department is a fast pace dynamic that involves quick decision making, balanced thinking and displays a great environment for team building and camaraderie, to serve something greater than yourself. Over the years I have learned the value of being a team player, why its important to role model and how to be a strong independent leader and thinking outside the box. A definite place for someone who is looking at wanting something more then just a job. This is a career with amazing benefits, a wide variety of learning opportunity and a group of award winning employer and employees to work with. I highly recommend applying to this life changing career.

This job was wonderful in so many aspects, from the responsibilities to the clientele that found themselves wandering into our facility. 

I would generally start work early around 5am, and work until mid-afternoon. Creating memberships for new guests, taking payments, setting up schedules and maintaining cleanliness of our facility. 
The only thing I had a hard time with was the "casual/part-time" label they gave my position. It prevented from getting livable hours, any chance in receiving benefits and no way to move up in the company. 

However it was an incredible atmosphere, and i would greatly go back if I was considered for a position.

Management in Fire Service is poor. The chief is a bully and nobody stands up to him. They do not follow their own Policies and Procedures. Lateral violence is evident. His bosses are well aware of his behaviour and do nothing to change it. Work place culture is poor given the inexperienced management. Team morale is low. On the other hand coworkers were great.  Would not recommend volunteering or working for the Fire department until management is either educated or replaced with competent individuals.

There are no typical days. Just routine tasks. Municipal work is high stress, with little to no thanks. I learned that, in municipal work, you have to love helping people in general, and gain your reward from a job done well, not from appreciation, and that negative attitudes and angry people are a result of frustration and not anything personal. The workplace culture varied a lot, depending on who you spent time with.


The Town of SLave Lake has great team members and great opportunities for employment and advancement.Constant turnover and restructuring creates many challenges and effectiveness. No recognition after years of service for valued employees. Micromanagement is a problem and HR tactics and support are questionable. Departments are pitted against each other and the Safety Program is an afterthought at best. 

I had a very positive work experience with this organization. I found management to be very responsive to being flexible as related to life circumstances that affected my job. It is an environment of good collaboration and potentially excellent co-worker business relationships.

Interesting work with great possibilities  hampered by weak revenue base and location. Weak senior management with poor leadership skills. Antagonistic management environment - Not recommended.

It doesn't matter if you are just starting your career or nearing the end, the Town of Slave Lake staff makes you feel included every step of the way.  The Work/life balance is excellent.  It is a non-toxic workplace where you feel appreciated.

Everyone that works at the Town of Slave lake is very kind and willing to help with whatever you may need. I received many opportunities working here, as once you work one job with them it is an automatic "in" to the wide range of jobs the Town offers.
