WALKING ON A CLOUD

Have been working at Walking on a Cloud for over 3 years now.  For the complete 3 years I had to deal with harassment in the workplace from multiple managers. I contacted the human resources rep multiple times to discuss and never got any sort of reply and eventually had to take it to the labour board.  The pay is awful, you can work all day selling hundreds of dollars of shoes but with their idea of "commission" you will not earn any extra money for your effort.  Any type of incentive they give you they eventually take away. When you think of a family run business you would hope they would care for their employees but it is the exact opposite, I have not once met one of the owners or family members in 3 and a half years, if they came up to me in the store I would assume they are a normal customer.  The only reason I stayed for as long as I did was because I was a student supporting myself and I needed the job.  I have been a loyal dedicated worker for 3.5 years and now after having my hours cut to basically nothing so we could hire 2 new workers I have decided to leave and find a job where the employers appreciate the work all us "little people" do to make them successful.  My advice is if you want to enjoy you job do NOT apply here.

Was not trained efficiently. Forced to work in the stockroom by myself some days, doing stock for 5+ hours because I was "new". Did not sell on Good Friday because manager was "too tired" to train me for the sales floor, missed out on one of the biggest sale days of the year in a commission based job. Co-workers were dramatic and bullies, no staff management. Crude language, inappropriate behavior such as removing articles of clothing behind the counter, suggestive innuendos, and verbally abusing manager through gossip. Indifferent and overly-strict manager. Special order sales are not managed properly, employees steal sales from one another when you have a day off, major income loss.  No consequences for inappropriate employee outbursts in front of customers. Company does not care for employees, horrible HR management. Atmosphere is tense and depressing most days, sets a precedent for the workplace. No teamwork whatsoever, every man for himself in this job.

Toxic co-workers, toxic environment, toxic management. Do not work for this company. There are plenty of other retail jobs out there who appreciate their employees and do not mentally and emotionally abuse them.

Walking on a cloud prides themselves in their customer service, working here has provided me with new variety of people skills I had never had before. A typical work day may be a little slow, as we are not one of the busiest stores, and we mostly cater to elderly. The store allows for some time to relax while we are not busy which is also very nice. Management within the store located at Seaway Mall is absolutely fantastic, she really goes above and beyond for the company and her employees. The company itself could certainly use more updating (Point of Sale system in particular), as well as the people in charge of shoe transfers and inventory. You will find with this job that the owners do a very poor job of paying attention to the important things (inventory, sales etc), and would rather attend to meaningless tasks that make the employees upset.

Preparing the store for the day, checking and arranging merchandise, checking stock, contacting other stores for coordinating weekly procedures (exchanges, deliveries, etc). Product knowledge thanks to good relations with vendors and PKs provided by them. Good understanding in between the store and warehouse management, very helpful. Workplace culture fully depends on the manager of the store and personnel that has been hired. In my case - exceptionally good judging by letters of those who had to resign by various reasons (letters are available). The company management did not pay much attention to proposals and suggestions of how to improve the store's operations. Working with people in the store and having Christmas parties together.

Working at Walking on a Cloud has been a great experience. A typical day at work usually involves the following:

- assisting customers with their orthopedic footwear needs
- performing opening/closing procedures; balancing books
- developing creative merchandising techniques
- completing transfers

During my time with this company I have learned how to respond maturely to a wide variety of people and situations.

Part of what makes this job so enjoyable is the people. The manager and co-workers are very professional, friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. 

The most difficult part of the job is having to sometimes work long hours.

The best part of the job is the regular customers. Typical day at work includes fitting customers for shoes.

Pretty much everything else I would rate poor or below average. I rated three stars for work-life balance due to it being a standard retail job that offers part-time hours. While employed with Walking on a Cloud I witnessed many things that should not be taking place in a workplace. Managers having staff clock them out after leaving early, staff clocking each other out after leaving early, Managers and staff talking poorly about customers in front of other customers as well as mocking customers. Management was aware of staff members fighting but did little to discipline. I wouldn't recommend this company.

As manager it was stresfull as  there was no communication between the store and head office, HR person  not helpful at all, arrogant and full of herself....Back in the day the company was run by the owner and was great, now his children took over and 👎.
I tried to get salary increases for my staff and in 4 years I got one ($ 0.25) after months of negotiations. They told me to sell more shoes and get a bigger commission ...
The staff and managers from other stores is what made me stay there for 7 years but was not worth it! You can find better jobs, the best thing I ever did was to run...lol

My typical day at Walking On A Cloud looks like setting up the store for opening, count till, greet customers and ask if they are looking for any particular shoe and if they need any sizes. If size is needed, go into back and grab shoe and particular size. Organize and strategize with co workers. The hardest part of the job is keeping up with customers and maintaining the cleanliness of the store during a rush. The most enjoyable part of the job is that I get to interact with different people and converse with them.

I worked at this company from a part-timer all the way up to assistant manager and as I moved up, I became more disappointed with how I was treated. The commission rate was very low and at times, our part timers made more then the management team.

Despite that, I did learn  a lot from this job. I was trained very well as an associate and it was enjoyable at times.  I learned to deal with complex customers and learned a far amount about shoes and foot problems.
