It's unfortunate to see Walsh advertising in their job postings that they maintain a "culture-first attitude that values support, collaboration, and inclusivity." The collaboration is required because they are so severely under staffed (on purpose), they do NOT provide support for staff members experiencing verbal or emotional abuse from lawyers, and their staff demographic does not foster "inclusivity". I wouldn't recommend this office to anyone in the job market. The HR department and the partnership are underqualified and do not support or offer solutions to the staff when they bring up challenging work environments or other office stressors. From my personal experience, this was not a good place to work in any sense. I would encourage anyone who thinks they might want to work here to ask HR the question "What is your staff and lawyer turnover like?" and you will learn everything you need to know about this firm. 

I worked at Walsh for nearly one year, as Legal Assistant to the Litigation department, it was my first employment in Canada. And there I found a welcoming, friendly, and organized environment. 

As an immigrant, I felt greatly respected, and I could see people had an honest interest in knowing more about my roots and culture.

The workplace and management culture are built around mutual support, and I met with great co-workers who had the patience to share with me their in-depth knowledge of the Canadian legal system and administrative practices.


Toxic and disrespectful work environment. Management does not respect staff or many of the lawyers, particularly those of a certain gender.  Extremely high turnover since the current management came into place.  Most of the people on the website have quit or retired but management wont take them off the website to save face. The talk about caring about clients is untrue for management, it's all about money. A few problematic and dishonest people get all the resources and support at the expense of the handful of good lawyers who remain. HR is never in the office and isnt confidential so youd be better off not saying anything, as it will be used against you.

Like many law firms , talk of a family and they care, but of course they could care less. HR is close friends with some of the higher ups and staff, so there is a conflict of interest. You cannot tell HR a problem and expect confidentiality when it has to do with those person as that person would be told. 

One of the higher ups shouldn’t be in their position as they have no skill in communicating with staff as they make the assistants feel below them.

The lawyers I worked for were amazing human beings.  I formed a close relationship with them and we worked together as a team.  I had full support from the lawyers, whenever I needed.  If I was working overtime, so were they.  Work-life balance was consistent.  I loved working there.  I felt included and part of a team and never working alone.  

They tell you they value you, but they do not. Management is awful and all the good lawyers have gone or have retired. They do not treat staff equally and communication is extremely poor. HR takes months to answer your emails. Doesn’t help she’s never in. We are told to voice our opinions as they “care”. Once we do, it gets turned on us and we get slapped on the hand. 
Save yourselves the stress and disrespect and find another firm that cares about their employees. 

Enjoyable place to work. The management and partners give the associates freedom to run their own practices but also provide support and mentor-ship when needed. The office has hired a new HR team that is proactively addressing previous internal office issues. Our team is collaborative and supportive. I do enjoy my job on a day to day basis. I would and have recommend the firm to other lawyers.

This establishment suffers from poor management and a lack of organization, with little to no enforceable protocols in place. Harassment and bullying go unchecked, contributing to a consistently high turnover rate. Outdated software and technology further hinder efficiency, while professionalism is lacking at multiple levels within the workplace. 

Walsh has taken purposeful steps in the last year to address past cultural issues. Since the joining the firm about 6 months ago I've experienced nothing but a fantastic culture of teamwork, collegiality and collaboration. I mostly enjoy the work life balance and feeling valued by my peers and the partnership.

They make a great pitch for lawyers to join and take care of the lawyers. Paralegals/Legal Assistant’s are treated differently and certainly not equally with the lawyers or equally amongst themselves. No teamwork here. Special privileges to “certain” people. 

No HR department to go to.. only someone who is there part time.
