White Point Beach Resort

The work environment became extremely hostile and dysfunctional once ownership assumed the role of HR during 2022. Interpersonal skills and experience in this role were grossly lacking, ultimately resulting in a toxic work culture and divide among staff. Communication was outrageously one-sided, and favoritism was shown to staff who fit the narrative and outcome they wanted. As a result, our  concerns and conflicts were not handled properly, if addressed at all.  

Aggressive communication and emotionally charged outbursts were used as a tool to assert dominance. I often felt uncomfortable, intimidated, disrespected, as well as stressed and anxious about going to work. It was frequently difficult having to navigate the owner’s personal relationship within the parameters of the business and their conflicting demands. They often blurred the lines between personal and professional, and expected full compliance with their demands regardless of the impact to others. 

The staff were lovely, hardworking, and wonderful, however, the owners’ expectations, and lack of operational support necessary to meet their expectations often led to burnout, fatigue, and a poor state of mental and physical health. 

Near the end of my time at White Point I had lost all respect for the owners as I had personally experienced their lack of empathy and professionalism, highly questionable behaviour, and the disregard for our well-being. 

Opportunities for other employment and housing in the surrounding areas are extremely limited, which is something to take into careful consideration if deciding to relocate for the sole purpose of a career at White Point. 

This field isn't where I ever saw myself working, but when a position came up that aligned with my previous experience, I applied. I had heard good things and negative things about the resort but I figured I'd interview and form my own ideas of White Point. I had been coming here a few times a year for meals and programs for which we had bought day passes. I had always been impressed by the staff especially. 

Since interviewing and being hired, I have come to appreciate the staff even more. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. People have gone out of their way to make me feel comfortable and to help me navigate this new position. There are several incentives as an employee and I am fairly paid, which sometimes is difficult to find in rural NS. Management listen to concerns and aren't afraid to praise for work well done. 

Guests are extremely important and providing them with an amazing experience is a top goal, but the thing is - it doesn't feel forced. I truly enjoy working here and I love making the guest experience a positive one. Having that good work environment makes all the difference. There's always something to learn, a project to undertake, or an idea to build on, and I never find myself checking the clock or counting down the minutes until I can go home like I have in previous positions. 

I think there was a sticky period for a time in which staff weren't as happy as they could've been. But I feel like changes are being made and the resort is moving forward. I'm truly lucky to have found myself part of this team and can see myself working here for a long while. 

A typical day at white point looks like: Arrive anytime before 9:00 am, Punch in for 9:00 as soon as you get there and organize your own housekeeping cart. Go down on the lines and do your morning stays, sweep walkways, clean windows/decks. Once morning duties are finished we are to call our manager and she let's us know which guests have checked out and then we clean them up. We had a everyday 3:00 pm deadline for all check ins to be done. Most days this involved having "crunch time" because if we have cottages that need to be cleaned and people waited until 11:00am to leave this would mean that we'd have to hurry but to keep in mind we had to pay attention to detail. 
I learned a lot from working at White Point, i know how to make beds effectively, i know how to clean a bathroom effectively and dust and vacuum. I went above and beyond everyday, I went out of my way to ensure guests we're satisfied with my service. I made sure people around me we're in a positive mood the best of my ability. I learned so much from my co-workers to make sure my job was done efficiently and effectively.
The hardest part of my job was ensuring to keep the 3:00 pm deadline because there were several times people had to leave what they we're doing to help and vise versa to ensure the guests would be arriving to our cottages in a very clean environment.
The most enjoyable part of my job is definitely seeing the bunnies everyday, i would bring food from home for down on the lines and every morning they'd greet me and i'd give them what food I had. I loved working the lines that we're closest to the ocean because the views we're unreal.

White point is a gorgeous place to work that feels like a real team.
I've worked here for nearly 5 years now in a variety of departments as needed, and it's the one place of employment I've never wanted to leave.
 White Point pays us well, offers full time employment and health/dental/ vision benefits, offers a flexible schedule, raises for those who work hard and pull their weight, puts on fun team building activities regularly, offers discounted staff meals, and discounted stays in beautiful accommodations and promotions / advancement from within are also available to the right candidates when available. 
I myself have had many opportunities to advance and try my hand at new things  and learn new skills here. From day one I received and continue to receive great training that has made me feel confident in my job role, and I feel supported by my team and my managers and owners at every turn.
Like every job there are hard busy days, and sometimes dealing with the public can be difficult, but at the end of the day being able to be there for people to help make their stay as enjoyable and memorable as possible makes me leave work everyday with a smile, and a desire to come back and do it all over again tomorrow. 
Hospitality is not for everyone, but if like me you like  helping people, and working as a part of a close knit team you should really consider White Point as a workplace for you.

If you suck up to your boss and the general manager then youll have a great experience at white point except for the low wages they pay you for overworking you. You don't get regular breaks if you work in the dinning room or kitchen. If you apply for a kitchen position here's what you should expect. Your boss will berate and degrade you no matter how much you show up for work and work extra. You will be overworked and underpayed and most times you won't have the proper amount of people to help you on busy nights. The grill cook, will basically get you to do all his work so he can take multiple breaks and get mad at you if you don't do something of his. White point does not care about their employees sadly. However most of the staff accept a few exceptions are really polite and easy to talk to. So if your apply for a job there and get hired and then either quit or get fired, you'll miss a lot of the people you work with but won't miss the job unless you kiss up to your boss and the special people who work there

White Point comes into your life as a charming place to work. Before you realize it, it has consumed every aspect of your life. There is alot of pressure and the environment is stressful. They continue to add amenities and activities to the property without the fundamentals to operate the additions. Its added workload on already overworked employees. The new immigration work program is creating a divide between staff and adding stress. There are communication barriers, lack of knowledge or our community/culture with the new workers. GM should be investing more time transitioning these workers. 
There needs to be more attention/money/time put towards their existing complimentary services, that have been neglected for years. 
All employee incentives besides the poor options for staff meals have been taken away. Beach buck program is a joke. IF you are given beach bucks, you can't use them for much. Staff have nothing to look forward to anymore. Its no longer a fun, happy place to work. GM has some family dynamics involved in his workplace which is also causing tension amongst staff. 
The owner is in the dark about alot of the "behind the scenes". The owner should be taking more time to speak one on one to managers and senior staff to get to the real issues. 

What is the best part of working at the company?
White Point is a wonderful place to work, with a supportive team environment and a strong sense of community. Management is approachable and encourages growth, and the workplace culture is both professional and welcoming. It’s a great place for anyone looking to gain experience while being part of a positive team.

What is the most stressful part about working at the company?
Fast passed environment. A wide mix of leisure guests and wedding/corporate groups. No two days are the same which makes the busy time engaging.  In the winter and shoulder seasons, it can be very slow at times, which can make the sudden increase in guests a bit stressful in getting back into the swing of things

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?
The management team is very supportive and easy to work with. They take the time to listen to staff, offer help when needed, and create an environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing ideas and asking questions.

What is a typical day like for you at the company?
Typical day is split between guest and staff interactions. asking questions and creating memorable experiences for guests.

Resort life comes with many, many stresses. That's just how it is. It takes a village, literally to operate a resort efficiently. I've been in the industry officially for over half my life speciallizing in resort management and I've been bogged, exhausted and beaten down - the industry has that effect. However, working for/with a team that recognizes the effects of the industry and does thier extreme best to educate and promote thier leaders and entire team by providing them with internal and third party training, reconizing peoples strengths and weaknesses (cause we all have those) and giving them the tools based around these attributes to help boost each individual to the best they can be! I joined this team to be part of the culture effect both within the company and the community relationships and i've seen/felt the shift happen. Without sounding egotistical,  I could literally fly off anywhere else and get a "job" but why would I when I can work at White Point - where I'm finally enjoying my career.  

I've worked at White Point in various roles over the years and have had to leave on multiple occasions because of the high expectations of my roles with not enough pay to compensate for the stress and the workload. There is very little appreciation shown to management from the higher-ups. Hours worked are long and stressful with limited support. Owners' expectations are unreasonable and unrealistic. Changes have made work difficult on staff and the lack of trust in the intentions of the owners and GM has caused a lot of turnover with very few options to replace. Staff are not given paid sick days and the benefits package for management isn't great. There is a strict policy staff are required to sign which limits their ability to take time off or stay home sick without repercussions. 

The staff are great to work with for the most part and the Resort is beautiful. There are staff perks like beach bucks, staff meals and some staff accommodations. The staff accommodations are used for the immigrant staff. 

White Point appears to be a dream job for anyone looking for life by the ocean... but White Point is all about appearances and appearances can be deceiving.

The recent turnover in management has been difficult and the loss is felt throughout the property. 

Owner involvement in human resources has led to a work culture that is toxic and stressed with a significant breakdown in trust. The foundational and human rights issues at White Point aren't addressed in a timely manner or at all. Instead the owners focus on continuing to expand the resort accommodations and events but lack the staff to keep up with the workload.  Our dining room now has to close frequently because of staffing issues ever since a recent turnover in senior management. Which makes shifts unpredictable for us. And when we are able to work we don't have any hands on support.

They do have some employee incentives but the work environment is so bad that bingo events or Halloween parties are hardly what we were missing to be happy.
