SE Design has a career opportunity for a Geomatics Supervisor in our Cold Lake, Alberta office.
Position Description:
- We are seeking a motivated individual with a minimum of 8 years’ experience in providing geomatics and survey services. The Geomatics Supervisor is responsible for taking the lead on geomatics projects and ensures that they are well planned and successfully executed.
- The Geomatics Supervisor role will provide leadership and oversight of geomatics projects including land development, topographic surveys, road and utility construction surveys, and other varied types of surveys.
- This role will involve periodic interoffice travel to Edmonton for project implementation and execution.
Position Duties:
- Supervise the day-to-day office and field geomatics projects undertaken by the SE Design project delivery team, ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project requirements.
- Provide technical leadership, guidance, and support to geomatics staff to facilitate successful project execution.
- Strong knowledge of surveying principles, procedures, and industry best practices.
- Ability to work independently in the field while exercising sound judgment and decision-making.
- Experience with construction layout, topographic surveys, as-built surveys, and utility staking.
- Coordinate with the SE Design project delivery team to communicate project scope, priorities, schedules, and resource requirements.
- Provide guidance, training and mentoring of SE Design’s geomatics team of technical staff.
- Validate core competencies for the geomatics team members to ensure that technical staff meet corporate competency requirements.
- Support project planning, scheduling, and execution while assisting Project Managers in achieving project objectives and timelines.
- Anticipate client’s questions or concerns and keep ahead of any impact on a client’s project and ensure on-time delivery and client satisfaction.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and to proactively respond to time-sensitive issues with exceptional time and people management skills.
- Utilize Microsoft Office, Trimble Business Center, and AutoCAD Civil 3D to review, interpret, and support the preparation of field files for survey plans and project deliverables.
- Perform and oversee drafting and calculations for construction surveying projects, including preliminary topographic surveys, record plan surveys, utility staking, road construction layout, pile staking and construction gridline layout.
- Deploy and operate industry-leading survey hardware, including Trimble R-Series GNSS receivers (via Trimble Access software), total stations, and digital levels to ensure high-precision field data collection.
- Use of UAV technology to conduct aerial surveys, managing the workflow from flight operations to post-processing for the creation of accurate orthomosaics, 3D surface models, and engineering deliverables.
- Review survey documentation, calculations, and reports prepared by technical staff to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with project requirements.
- Assist with project administration activities, including tracking project progress, supporting billing information, and communicating project status to Project Managers.
- Lead regular team meetings to coordinate workloads, communicate project updates, address technical issues, and promote efficient project delivery.
- Supervise office operations related to survey data management, drafting, quality control, and document organization.
- Promote and participate in the implementation and maintenance of SE Design's Health, Safety, and Environment Program, including compliance with COR certification requirements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by identifying opportunities to improve workflows, processes, and team efficiency.
- Coordinate equipment, vehicles, and survey instrumentation to ensure resources are properly maintained, calibrated, and available for project needs.
- Assist management with workforce planning, recruitment, and onboarding of new geomatics staff as required.
Qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in geomatics engineering, geomatics technology program or related field.
- A minimum of 5-8 years of practical surveying experience.
- Proficiency with Trimble Business Center, Trimble Access, AutoCAD Civil 3D, Agisoft Metashape, and DJI Terra.
- Proven ability to lead survey crews and coordinate field operations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage geomatics projects, work effectively in diverse client environments, and lead multidisciplinary technical and professional teams.
- Strong project management and coordination skills.
- Ability to obtain a Government of Canada security clearance, including Secret level, for access to 4 Wing Cold Lake.
- Valid Class 5 Drivers License with a minimum of 4 years verified Canadian driving experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the flexibility to adapt to a variety of projects and changing priorities.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other standard engineering and surveying software.
- Previous experience supervising, mentoring, or developing project staff is considered an asset.
- Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and maintaining industry best practices.
