Job Summary
PANTECHNOLOGY ENGINEERED SERVICES LTD. is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Automation Engineering Technologist / PLC Programmer to join our engineering team.
The ideal candidate must have strong hands-on experience in PLC programming, industrial automation, HMI development, SCADA programming, control system design, troubleshooting, commissioning, and process automation. This role requires a technically strong individual who can design, program, test, troubleshoot, and support automation systems for industrial equipment, process skids, batching systems, CIP systems, valve clusters, pumps, mixers, conveyors, and related manufacturing processes.
The candidate must be proficient in PLC programming using Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram, and related PLC programming languages, with strong knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, instrumentation, sensors, control panels, and SCADA systems.
This position also requires the ability to support electrical/control drawings, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, project documentation, site commissioning, customer communication, and shop-floor/site supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot PLC programs for industrial automation systems.
- Program PLCs using Ladder Logic, Structured Text, Function Block Diagram, and other IEC 61131-3 programming methods.
- Develop, configure, and troubleshoot HMI and SCADA systems for process control, equipment monitoring, alarms, trends, recipes, user access levels, data logging, and operator interface screens.
- Work with Allen-Bradley PLCs, including CompactLogix, ControlLogix, MicroLogix, and related Rockwell Automation platforms.
- Program and troubleshoot FactoryTalk View ME/SE, PanelView HMIs, SCADA interfaces, and other industrial visualization systems.
- Configure and troubleshoot VFDs, servo drives, sensors, transmitters, flow meters, pressure switches, temperature controllers, valves, actuators, and industrial communication networks.
- Develop automation logic for pumps, mixers, valve clusters, batching systems, CIP systems, conveyors, process skids, tank level control, temperature control, flow control, and safety/interlock systems.
- Design and implement control sequences, alarms, interlocks, permissives, fault handling, safety logic, and automated process routines.
- Review and develop electrical schematics, control panel layouts, I/O lists, network drawings, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and control system documentation.
- Perform PLC/HMI/SCADA testing, simulation, debugging, commissioning, and startup support in both shop-floor and customer site environments.
- Troubleshoot automation issues related to PLC logic, HMI screens, SCADA communication, field devices, VFDs, instrumentation, wiring, and process equipment.
- Support integration of PLC systems with SCADA, HMIs, VFDs, remote I/O, Ethernet/IP devices, and industrial communication networks.
- Prepare and maintain PLC programs, HMI files, SCADA backups, electrical drawings, project documentation, commissioning reports, and change records.
- Assist with control panel design, electrical component selection, instrumentation selection, I/O mapping, and automation hardware layout.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, fabrication, welding, and installation teams to ensure automation systems are properly designed, installed, tested, and commissioned.
- Supervise technicians and tradespeople during panel building, equipment wiring, installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and site startup.
- Attend project meetings with customers to understand automation requirements, process sequences, system issues, and project expectations.
- Provide technical support for quotations, project estimates, material lists, labour requirements, and automation scope development.
- Support continuous improvement by identifying automation improvements, reducing downtime, improving process efficiency, and optimizing equipment performance.
- Maintain organized project files, program backups, drawings, reports, and technical documentation in accordance with company standards.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced Diploma or higher in Automation Engineering Technology, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Instrumentation and Control, or a related technical field.
- Strong hands-on experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting.
- Must be proficient in Ladder Logic programming.
- Must have working knowledge of Structured Text programming.
- Must have working knowledge of Function Block Diagram programming.
- Must have hands-on experience with HMI and SCADA programming.
- Strong knowledge of Allen-Bradley PLCs, Rockwell Automation software, FactoryTalk, PanelView HMIs, VFDs, remote I/O, and industrial networks.
- Experience with Studio 5000 Logix Designer, RSLogix 500, FactoryTalk View ME/SE, and related Rockwell Automation software is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of electrical controls, control panels, sensors, instrumentation, motors, VFDs, valves, actuators, and industrial process equipment.
- Ability to read, understand, and develop electrical schematics, control drawings, P&IDs, process flow diagrams, I/O lists, and panel layouts.
- Experience with SCADA features such as alarms, trends, recipes, data logging, user permissions, equipment status screens, and process monitoring.
- Experience with industrial communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, DeviceNet, Profibus, Profinet, or similar networks.
- Strong troubleshooting skills for PLC logic, HMI/SCADA issues, field wiring, instrumentation, VFDs, sensors, and process equipment.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, AutoPlant, or similar design software is considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Project.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, prioritize work, and meet project deadlines.
- Ability to work in shop-floor, fabrication, and customer site environments.
Pay: $35.00-$45.00 per hour
