The Cook has a primary responsibility to provide nutritious and attractive meals in a timely manner, providing meals at correct temperatures and textures for all clients, respites, and guests while following Canada’s Food Guide. The Cook maintains and complies with Public Health Standards and Regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for following HACCP procedures on;
- Receiving of foods and products
- Storage – labelling of products, proper placement
- Preparation and handling of food
- Cooking/serving at correct time/temperatures and diets
- Proper cooling of prepared meals and storage – labelling of product, proper placement
- Food preparation for all regular, therapeutic, and modified diets
- Serving 3 meals and 2 snacks throughout the day following Canada’s Food Guide and menu set out by the Manager of Core Services
- Documentation – completing diet recording, inventory, temperatures, communication reporting, meal choices, cleaning recording, equipment maintenance checks, etc. as required
- Reporting to Manager of Core Services any relevant information ex: client meal requests, etc.
- Manage workload and work area while keeping a clean and safe work environment
- Practise good personal hygiene and frequent handwashing
- Follow cleaning schedules and perform cleaning duties as scheduled
- Effectively monitor expiry dates and rotate food stores as needed
- Critical thinking skills in order to effectively utilize food supplies and avoid food waste
- Maintain high sanitation standards as set out by Public Health and PLGB Policies
- Follow all safe food handling regulations
- Follow established dietary and Health & Safety policies and procedures
- Attend in-service educational programs as required
- Assist in preparation, set up and clean up of catering or fundraiser events as required
- Act as the back up for the water systems operator as required
- Perform other department duties or special assignments as directed by the Core Services Manager
Qualifications
- One year of professional cooking experience
- Grade 12 diploma or equivalent
- Cook Level 2 Certificate
- Successful completion and maintain regular renewal of Safe Food Handlers Course
- Must have or be willing to obtain and maintain regular renewal of non-violent crisis intervention training
- Must have or be willing to obtain and maintain regular renewal of small system drinking water testing certification
- Must have or be willing to obtain and maintain regular renewal First Aide and CPR certification
- Valid Criminal reference check for vulnerable sector
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record (as per agency insurance requirements) and reliable vehicle
- Proven work performance, effective communications skills (including written and verbal, interpersonal and organizational skills, and ability to work independently and as part of a team
Competencies
- Understand and follow written and verbal directions
- Proficient in basic computer skills for recipe documentation, inventory tracking, and food order processing.
- Maintains standards of confidentiality and ethical practice according to PLGB Code of Conduct
- Ability to read and understand kitchen equipment, operators, and policy manuals
- Know and follow all health and safety policies and procedures, WHMIS training
- Always demonstrates safe work practices
- Reports all unsafe conditions, practices equipment. Reports all accidents and completes incident reports
- Ability to work independently and as a team member. Fulfils shift responsibilities
- Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment
- Learn to use a variety of kitchen equipment, supplies and materials
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Considerable knowledge of equipment, cleaning supplies and methods used in performing maintenance, and cleaning in kitchen equipment
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic necessary to calculate portions of product for correct measurements
- Employee pursues knowledge and information necessary to perform job duties
- Completes work in an organized and time efficient manner
Committee Participation

Working Conditions
- Ability to lift 50 pounds
- Ability to walk, kneel, climb, stand, stoop, crouch, and reach when performing an array of kitchen related activities

- Employee is aware of and implements/enforces all organizational policies and procedures, ministry guidelines and union collective agreements
- Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during public health incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
