Shaft and Tunnel Consulting Services Ltd. is an employee-owned company specializing in the design and construction management of tunnels, shafts, and other underground infrastructure. Based in Saskatoon, SK, the company's core mission is to provide expert solutions for complex underground projects, with a focus on delivering high-quality results on time and within budget.
We are growing our multidisciplinary engineering team and are seeking Engineers across all experience levels: junior, intermediate, or senior. We welcome applicants from mining, geotechnical, structural, or mechanical engineering backgrounds to support the planning, design, and execution of underground and surface mining construction and infrastructure projects.
This opportunity is available in person at our Saskatoon, SK office and has remote opportunities for candidates located in the Greater Vancouver, BC and Greater Toronto, ON areas.
The role will be tailored to the successful candidate's discipline, experience, and professional registration. Junior engineers will work under the guidance of senior staff, intermediate engineers will independently deliver and coordinate technical work, and senior engineers will lead complex scopes, provide senior review, support clients, and mentor project personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, coordinate, and review engineering calculations, analyses, models, drawings, specifications, reports, and design packages, with the level of independence based on experience.
- Develop discipline-specific solutions, including mine planning and infrastructure layouts, geotechnical and ground-support assessments, structural design, or mechanical equipment, piping, pumping, ventilation, hoisting, and material-handling systems.
- Coordinate deliverables with engineers, project managers, designers, drafters, procurement personnel, vendors, construction teams, site operations, and clients.
- Participate in field investigations, inspections, measurements, condition assessments, constructability reviews, commissioning activities, and technical troubleshooting.
- Support proposals, estimates, schedules, material take-offs, procurement packages, vendor-document reviews, construction support, and project closeout.
- Identify and resolve technical risks, design conflicts, field changes, requests for information, and multidisciplinary coordination issues.
- Participate in project meetings, design reviews, and client discussions, clearly communicating technical findings, recommendations, risks, and project impacts.
- Ensure engineering work is accurate, constructible, and completed in accordance with project requirements, applicable codes and standards, quality processes, professional obligations, and regulatory requirements.
- Depending on experience and professional authorization, lead technical scopes, complete quality reviews, approve or seal deliverables, mentor junior personnel, and support continuous improvement.
- Promote and comply with company HSSE policies, procedures, and safe work practices during office and field activities.
- Other duties as required to meet project and/or business needs.
Experience Level
- Junior Engineer / Engineer-in-Training: 0-3 years of relevant engineering, co-op, internship, or project experience and eligibility for Engineer-in-Training registration.
- Intermediate Engineer: 4-8 years of relevant experience, with the ability to independently complete technical work and coordinate deliverables. Professional Engineer registration or eligibility is preferred; strong EIT candidates approaching registration may also be considered.
- Senior Engineer: 8+ years of progressive experience and Professional Engineer registration, or eligibility to obtain registration in Saskatchewan, with demonstrated technical leadership, client support, and mentorship experience.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in mining, geological/geotechnical, civil/structural, mechanical engineering, or another closely related engineering discipline.
- Experience in mining, heavy industrial, underground construction, infrastructure, or consulting is preferred; shaft, tunnel, mine-site, or underground project experience is considered an asset.
- Working knowledge of engineering calculations, technical documentation, applicable codes and standards, and software appropriate to the candidate's discipline.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, client-service, and multidisciplinary teamwork skills.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as required.
