Job Description:
Position Purpose summary:
The Cook prepares nutritious meals as outlined in menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. The incumbent is responsible for adjusting menus as necessary.
Accountabilities:
Food Services
- Prepare and serve attractive, nutritious meals, according to the prepared menu plans and in accordance with applicable food service and Canada’s Food Guide and safety regulations.

Make use of and decides on the best use of resources to minimize waste.

Arrange for any special dietary needs and prepare an ongoing list of food supplies needed according to menus.

Receive, check, and store food supplies when they are delivered.

Maintain the cleanliness of the kitchen and food storage areas (pantry, freezers, and fridges).

Clean and maintain other kitchen equipment in good condition.

Report to the supervisor if necessary, regarding equipment that is required/or broken which needs to be repaired or replaced.

Record entries and deviations of the menu in the daily log, ensuring log is up to date for inspection.
Health and Safety

Ensure that Department of Health and Fire regulations are adhered to in the kitchen and food storage areas.

Ensure that daily temperatures are recorded for the sterile refrigerator and freezer, they are up to date for inspection

Maintain sanitation, health, and safety standards in work areas, cleanliness of all equipment, food preparation areas, cooking surfaces, dishes, utensils, drawers, and cupboards.

Follow guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitor practices to ensure adherence.

Monitor and maintain kitchen equipment, report any equipment issues to supervisor.

Maintain sanitation, hygiene, health and safety standards and safe handling of foods while performing duties.

Adhere to fire and health and safety standards pertaining to the kitchen and other areas of the facility.

Report to the supervisor new equipment that is required or broken equipment, which needs to be repaired or replaced.

Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
Perform other position related duties.
Critical Relationship Management:

Direct Manager and other management members, staff, volunteers, and children.

Participate in regular staff meetings to review operational effectiveness.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

This position reports directly to the Child Care Supervisor or designate.
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

Assist with food management, complete food inventories, donations/product flow and distribution of same.

Work within assigned budget.
Working Conditions:

Normal hours of work – 8:30am to 1:30 pm

Normal location of work is at The Learning Corner Child Care Centre, 3199 Lauzon Road, Windsor, ON N8T 2Z7

This is a casual/on call position with no set hours per week.

Ability to lift/move objects on a regular basis up to 30 pounds.

Some flexibility in scheduling may be required.

This job requires walking, carrying, sitting, reaching, bending, twisting, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching frequently and working in a standing position for long periods of time.

education and experience Qualifications:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

Completed Secondary School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months

Cook’s papers (1-year course) preferred

Current Safe Food Handler’s Certification

Current First Aid and CPR Certification

Required to have a health assessment and immunization.

Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, with at least one (1) year of institutional cooking experience preffered

Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $20.09 to $25.11 with a maximum of $30.13.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
