Job Title: Mechanical Insulator
Job Description
This role focuses on installing, removing, and repairing thermal and acoustical insulation on a wide range of industrial equipment within a large-scale shipbuilding environment. You will work primarily on major marine projects, including support ships and an upcoming polar icebreaker, ensuring high-quality insulation work that meets strict specifications and safety standards.
Responsibilities

Apply, remove, and repair thermal and acoustical insulation, including materials such as calcium silicate, glass foam, mineral wool, fiberglass, armflex, and similar products on industrial equipment such as duct piping, heat exchangers, tanks, and vessels.

Read and interpret drawings and specifications to determine insulation requirements, material types, and installation methods.

Select the appropriate type and amount of insulation and determine the correct method of securing it, such as pin welding, wiring, banding, or taping, based on the equipment’s temperature, location (indoor or outdoor), shape, and function.

Measure and cut insulating materials and coverings accurately to required shapes and dimensions, ensuring precise fit and minimal waste.

Fit insulation around obstructions and irregular shapes, and form insulation materials and protective coverings to match complex surfaces.

Install vapour barriers to protect insulated systems and ensure long-term performance and durability.

Finish insulated surfaces by applying metal cladding, canvas, PVC, or cement, delivering a clean, safe, and professional finish.

Use hand and power tools safely and effectively to complete insulation tasks in accordance with project specifications and safety procedures.

Collaborate with supervisors, forepersons, and team members to coordinate work, meet project timelines, and support overall site productivity.

Follow all site safety rules and procedures, including those specific to working in a marine shipyard environment.

Participate in weekend overtime work when required to meet project schedules.
Essential Skills

3+ years of mechanical insulation experience

Ability to read, write, and speak English effectively to understand drawings, specifications, and safety instructions.

Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications related to insulation work.

Eligibility to meet security requirements for the site, such as permanent residency or citizenship, as required by project security protocols.

Reliable transportation to commute to the shipyard for early morning shifts.

Physical ability to work in an industrial shipyard environment, including standing, bending, and working in confined or elevated spaces as needed.
