What the role carries
Prophet River First Nation is seeking an experienced and relationship-focused Human Resources Manager to serve on the Nation’s Management Team. Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), this position provides strategic HR guidance and hands-on support across all areas of human resources, helping to build a workplace that is respectful, culturally safe, compliant, and supportive of employee success.
This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced HR professional who enjoys balancing strategy with practical implementation. The Human Resources Manager works closely with the CAO, Directors, Managers, employees, Payroll, and Finance to strengthen employee relations, support organizational growth, enhance workplace wellness, and ensure fair and consistent HR practices throughout the organization.
The successful candidate will bring strong employee relations expertise, a collaborative approach to problem-solving, excellent coaching and communication skills, and a passion for supporting people and community.
Your day to day
Employee Relations & Workplace Culture
You will support employees, managers, and directors with workplace concerns and employee relations matters while promoting respectful, restorative, and relationship-based approaches to resolving challenges. You will help foster a healthy, culturally safe, and productive workplace by providing guidance on performance, attendance, workplace conflict, investigations, policy interpretation, and employee wellbeing.
Recruitment, Workforce Planning & Organizational Growth
You will collaborate with leadership to identify workforce needs, support organizational growth, and coordinate full-cycle recruitment activities. This includes job postings, candidate screening, interviews, references, onboarding, workforce planning, succession planning, and employee retention initiatives.
Coaching & Management Support
You will provide coaching and practical guidance to managers and directors on people-related matters, including difficult conversations, employee development, conflict resolution, performance management, and workplace communication. You will also develop and deliver workshops, tools, and resources that strengthen leadership capacity across the organization.
Health, Safety & Cultural Safety
You will coordinate workplace health and safety initiatives, support the Joint Health and Safety Committee, oversee WCB and return-to-work processes, and help ensure compliance with health and safety requirements. You will also support cultural safety, employee wellness, harassment prevention, and workplace wellbeing initiatives.
HR Programs, Policies & Compliance
You will develop, review, and update HR policies, procedures, forms, and employee handbook materials while ensuring compliance with the Canada Labour Code and other applicable legislation. You will monitor legislative changes, provide policy guidance, and help strengthen organizational systems and HR practices.
Compensation, Benefits & HR Administration
You will support compensation planning, salary reviews, job evaluations, and market research while maintaining accurate and confidential employee records. You will also act as a key resource for employee questions regarding benefits, leaves, payroll, and HR processes while working closely with Finance and Payroll to support an accurate and timely payroll process.
Lived and learned experience
Training and Education
- Degree or diploma in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or a related field.
- A combination of education, training, lived experience, and relevant professional experience may be considered.
- CPHR designation is considered an asset.
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Valid B.C. Class 5 Driver’s License.
Experience
- 7+ years of progressive Human Resources experience.
- 3+ years in a management, senior advisory, or leadership-level HR role.
- Significant experience managing complex employee relations and workplace matters.
- Demonstrated experience conducting workplace investigations and facilitating conflict resolution.
- Experience developing HR policies, programs, and organizational frameworks.
- Experience leading workforce planning and recruitment strategies.
- Experience designing compensation programs, salary structures, and job evaluation systems.
- Experience supporting occupational health and safety programs.
- Experience working within Indigenous organizations, communities, governments, or closely related environments is strongly preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong knowledge of the Canada Labour Code and federal employment legislation.
- Advanced employee relations and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong facilitation, mediation, coaching, and communication abilities.
- Working knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation, WCB processes, and best practices.
- Strong policy writing and analytical skills.
- Ability to manage sensitive matters with discretion and confidentiality.
- Strong organizational, planning, and project management skills.
- High emotional intelligence, sound judgment, and strong relationship-building capabilities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to foster and maintain a culturally safe and respectful environment.
- Professionalism with the ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to demonstrate and promote a genuine respect for Prophet River First Nation culture and protocols.
What we offer
- Competitive salary ranging from $100,000 to $115,000 per year, depending on experience and qualifications.
- 31.5-hour work week, supporting work-life balance.
