JOB SUMMARY
The Maintenance Technician / Millwright Apprentice is responsible for the maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, installation, and optimization of production machinery, mechanical systems, and facility equipment to support safe and efficient operations. This hybrid role combines general industrial maintenance functions with hands-on millwright apprenticeship training and mechanical trade development.
Reporting to the Maintenance Lead, Production Manager, and/or designated Journeyperson Millwright, the incumbent will perform preventive maintenance, emergency repairs, machine installations, precision alignments, equipment rebuilds, and troubleshooting of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and basic electrical systems. This role supports the continuous operation of manufacturing equipment while developing competency in industrial mechanical trade practices.
This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving skills, adherence to safety regulations, and the ability to work both independently and under skilled trade supervision. The incumbent is expected to contribute to minimizing downtime, improving equipment reliability, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
KEY RESULT AREAS (KRAS)
1. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE & EMERGENCY REPAIRS (Weighting 45%)
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on all production machinery, mechanical systems, and supporting facility equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications, operational requirements, and internal preventive maintenance schedules to ensure optimal equipment reliability and minimize unplanned downtime.
- Develop, support, and execute preventive maintenance plans by assessing equipment usage patterns, maintenance history, manufacturer recommendations, and operational demands to proactively reduce failures and extend equipment lifespan.
- Conduct regular inspections of motors, pumps, conveyors, bearings, chains, belts, gearboxes, rollers, shafts, couplings, pneumatics, hydraulics, and related mechanical systems to identify wear, misalignment, defects, leaks, or abnormal operating conditions.
- Perform routine servicing including lubrication, cleaning, tensioning, adjustments, tightening, and replacement of mechanical components to maintain proper functionality and operational efficiency.
- Monitor machine performance and operating conditions to identify irregularities such as vibration, overheating, excessive wear, pressure loss, or noise that may indicate potential mechanical failure.
- Schedule, track, document, and maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance activities, completed repairs, parts usage, and equipment history.
- Perform condition-based maintenance assessments using diagnostic equipment such as vibration analyzers, thermal imaging devices, and precision measuring tools to identify potential failures before operational impact occurs.
- Coordinate maintenance activities with production teams to ensure preventive work is completed with minimal disruption to operational schedules.
- Maintain adequate inventory levels of critical spare parts, consumables, and maintenance supplies to support ongoing preventive maintenance activities and reduce repair delays.
Emergency Repairs
- Respond immediately and efficiently to equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, or operational failures to restore production capabilities and minimize downtime.
- Assess equipment failures, determine the root cause, and implement corrective repairs in a timely and safe manner.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and basic electrical faults affecting production machinery and facility systems.
- Remove, repair, rebuild, or replace defective components including motors, bearings, gearboxes, belts, chains, sensors, valves, cylinders, and drive assemblies.
- Troubleshoot emergency issues involving conveyor systems, automated equipment, and rotating machinery to restore operational performance.
- Coordinate with production personnel and management during emergency breakdowns to provide status updates, estimated repair timelines, and operational recommendations.
- Escalate major equipment failures requiring specialized vendor support or external contractors when necessary.
- Conduct post-repair testing and operational verification to ensure machinery is fully functional, safe, and operating within acceptable performance tolerances.
- Document all emergency repairs, root causes, corrective actions, and replacement parts in the maintenance reporting system for future reference and trend analysis
2. EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION & MACHINE CALIBRATION (Weighting 35%)
Equipment Installation
- Assist in the installation, relocation, dismantling, and commissioning of production machinery, facility equipment, and mechanical systems to support operational requirements and equipment upgrades.
- Interpret blueprints, mechanical schematics, electrical diagrams, technical manuals, and manufacturer specifications to facilitate proper equipment assembly and installation.
- Assemble machinery and mechanical systems in accordance with operational requirements, engineering specifications, and safety standards.
- Install motors, conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, rollers, pneumatic systems, and hydraulic components as required for production operations.
- Verify all mechanical, electrical, and operational connections are properly installed and functional prior to equipment startup.
- Conduct startup testing, operational checks, and calibration adjustments to ensure machinery is functioning safely and efficiently.
- Coordinate with external vendors, contractors, and internal departments during equipment installations, modifications, or upgrades
Equipment Rebuilds & Mechanical Repairs
- Perform mechanical disassembly, inspection, repair, and rebuild of machinery components including gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, rollers, and rotating equipment.
- Remove and replace worn or defective bearings, shafts, seals, bushings, couplings, sprockets, and drive assemblies.
- Conduct repairs on hydraulic and pneumatic systems including cylinders, valves, hoses, fittings, and pressure components.
- Rebuild mechanical assemblies to manufacturer tolerances and operational standards to ensure proper function and equipment longevity.
- Perform fitting, shimming, balancing, and component adjustments to maintain equipment accuracy and performance.
- Support welding, fabrication, and modification work where required to facilitate repairs or equipment improvements.
Machine Calibration
- Perform shaft alignment, pulley alignment, conveyor tracking, equipment leveling, and structural alignment to ensure machinery operates within acceptable tolerances.
- Utilize precision measuring instruments including dial indicators, calipers, micrometers, feeler gauges, and laser alignment tools to perform accurate measurements and alignments.
- Inspect and verify machinery tolerances during installations, rebuilds, and repairs to ensure proper fit and operation.
- Adjust equipment positioning, mounting points, and drive systems to correct alignment issues and prevent premature wear or operational inefficiencies.
- Conduct final operational testing following alignment work to confirm performance standards have been achieved.
3. TECHNICAL SUPPORT & APPRENTICESHIP DEVELOPMENT (Weighting 25%)
Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and control system failures to support the continuous operation of production equipment and minimize operational downtime.
- Assist in diagnosing PLC-related issues, sensors, limit switches, motor controls, relays, and related automation systems to identify and resolve operational faults.
- Utilize diagnostic tools including multimeters, vibration analyzers, infrared thermometers, pressure gauges, and precision measuring instruments to assess equipment performance and identify root causes of failures.
- Conduct detailed root cause analyses of recurring mechanical, electrical, or operational failures and recommend corrective actions, system improvements, or process modifications to improve reliability.
- Provide technical support and guidance to production personnel regarding machine operation, troubleshooting, minor adjustments, and best practices for safe equipment use.
- Support equipment optimization initiatives by identifying opportunities for performance improvements, reduced downtime, and enhanced maintenance efficiency.
Apprenticeship Development
- Work under the supervision and direction of a Journeyperson Millwright, Maintenance Lead, or designated senior technician to develop practical trade competencies and expand technical expertise.
- Participate in hands-on training involving rigging, hoisting, shaft alignment, conveyor tracking, mechanical fitting, machine rebuilds, precision installation, and advanced troubleshooting techniques.
- Maintain apprenticeship records, training logs, and required documentation to support trade progression where applicable.
- Develop a strong working knowledge of industrial mechanical systems, machine tolerances, repair procedures, and trade-specific standards.
- Demonstrate ongoing skill development, increased technical competency, and progressive independence in performing maintenance and millwright-related duties.
4. COMPLIANCE & DOCUMENTATION (Weighting 15%)
Safety Compliance
- Comply with all Company safety policies, procedures, and legislative requirements, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, hazard assessments, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
- Conduct hazard assessments prior to commencing maintenance, repairs, installations, or emergency work to identify and mitigate workplace risks.
- Ensure machinery is properly isolated, locked out, and verified safe prior to performing maintenance activities.
- Maintain awareness of workplace hazards including stored energy, moving parts, electrical hazards, pinch points, and elevated work areas.
- Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks, inspections, and incident investigations as required.
- Report hazards, near misses, equipment defects, and unsafe conditions immediately to management.
- Promote and support a culture of safety, accountability, and regulatory compliance within the maintenance and production departments.
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete all maintenance logs, inspection reports, repair records, work orders, and service documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Document machine failures, diagnostics performed, repairs completed, replacement parts used, and downtime durations for operational reporting and maintenance history.
- Maintain accurate equipment service records to support audits, preventive maintenance planning, and equipment lifecycle management.
- Assist in internal audits, preventive maintenance reviews, and equipment performance assessments.
- Generate maintenance reports and provide feedback to management regarding recurring failures, repair costs, equipment performance trends, and replacement recommendations.
- Identify and recommend opportunities for continuous improvement, cost savings, operational efficiency, and enhanced equipment reliability.
- JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in an industrial or manufacturing maintenance role.
- Equivalent mechanical maintenance experience may be considered.
- Registered Millwright Apprentice preferred, or willingness to register and pursue apprenticeship.
- Strong understanding of industrial mechanical systems, conveyors, pumps, motors, and rotating equipment.
- Experience with bearings, gearboxes, chains, belts, and mechanical assemblies.
- Basic electrical troubleshooting experience is considered an asset.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals.
- Strong mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic troubleshooting skills.
- Experience with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) preferred.
- Familiarity with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and other control systems.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and on-call availability as needed to support production.
