About Qualicum School District

Qualicum School District is centrally situated on east Vancouver Island and covers the area of Nanoose Bay to Bowser and spans from Errington across the Strait of Georgia to Lasqueti Island. We serve a student population of approximately 4700 students. Qualicum School District consists of eight elementary schools (Grades K-7), two secondary schools (Grade 8-12), an alternate school (PASS/Woodwinds) and a Distributed Learning program to support home-learning families called the Collaborative Education Alternative Program (CEAP). False Bay School on Lasqueti Island is entirely off-grid with an immense solar project recently completed. Qualicum School District also embraces many community organizations through various school programs. We are currently seeking a Heavy Duty Mechanic to join our team. This a full-time 40.00 hours per week, 12 months per year position offering a competitive hourly wage and comprehensive benefits, including enrollment in a defined pension plan.

JOB TITLE: Heavy Duty Mechanic

JOB FUNCTION:

An employee in this classification maintains and inspects all district owned vehicles and equipment to ensure

compliance with all applicable codes, bylaws and procedures as required by the School District, and any Provincial

or Federal licensing authority.

REPORTING TO:

Director of Operations or Designate.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:

1. Repairs and maintains district school buses, vehicles and other equipment.

2. In compliance with the Motor Vehicle Standards Act, inspects and certifies school buses, trucks, trailers,

including fuel and air brake systems.

3. Schedules, performs and maintains records of all preventative maintenance and repair work on vehicles.

4. Researches and orders parts and replacement equipment as authorized by the Director of Operations or

Designate.

5. Ships, receives and inventories equipment and replacement parts.

6. Updates Repair Manuals and Service Bulletins.

7. Responds to emergency breakdowns.

8. Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment.

9. May perform the duties of a bus driver as required.

10. Performs other job-related duties.

REQUIRED ABILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school graduation or equivalent.

2. Valid BC Trades Qualification or Interprovincial Trades Qualification for heavy duty mechanical repair or

commercial transport repair. Automotive mechanical repair would be considered an asset.

3. Valid Air Endorsement Certificate.

4. Class 2 BC driver’s license considered an asset.

5. Certification as a vehicle inspector under the auspices of the Vehicle Inspection Division of the Motor Vehicle

Department, to perform all aspects of vehicle inspection.

6. Minimum five (5) years as a journeyman experience.

7. Valid Basic or Emergency First Aid certificate (one day course).

8. Competency using tools and diagnostic equipment and technology.

9. Ability to work effectively with staff.
