The Department of English Language Centre invites applications for a part-time ELC Instructor position, commencing September 8, 2026.
Salary: $8,062-$18,913
The ELC Instructor will deliver the English Language Centre (ELC) Intensive Academic English Program (IAEP) curriculum to ELC students. Instructors are expected to teach for the dates of their contract. Teaching assignments are made based on what is best for the program. Instructors must be available to teach in-person to students who are studying on campus or remotely, or a combination of the two.
The successful candidate will have:
- University degree from an accredited post-secondary institution
- Completion of a TESL Canada recognized TEAL training program with:
- A minimum of 100 hours of theory and methodology
- A supervised practicum of a minimum of 20 hours
- Minimum 5 years’ experience teaching English as an Additional Language or English as a Foreign Language
- An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Key Responsibilities and Duties:
- The successful candidate must be able to work in-person or remotely based on the needs of the program. For remote delivery, the successful candidate will use the online platforms selected by the ELC. For in-person delivery, it is expected that the successful candidate will use technology in the classroom. Virtual learning platforms and techniques are expected to be used in any delivery mode. Hybrid teaching may also be required.
- Instruct and assess students
- Provide and maintain a safe, supportive and effective learning environment
- Collaborate with colleagues and administrative staff with program or teaching related materials development
- Maintain consistency and meet curriculum expectations as outlined on UMLearn
- Prepare online lessons, assignments, materials and assessments in accordance to the curriculum
- Create, prepare and invigilate exams
- Provide students opportunity, to see all assessments, and to receive appropriate and timely feedback
- Maintain accurate electronic records
- Submit documents, reports, etc. electronically by the required deadlines
- Document and submit student issues and/or concerns
- Meet with students
- Refer students to appropriate resources
- Participate in weekly staff meetings
- Lead workshops, collaborative time, staff meetings or ELC related events
- Attend and participate in scheduled professional development events
- Complete the Assessment of and Reflection on Teaching (ART) at the end of the term
- Comply with UM and ELC policies and procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Preferred qualifications include:
- Competence using computers required
- Experience with virtual learning platforms and techniques required
- Experience using UMLearn required
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
- Empathetic approach to the instructional needs and concerns of students learning in-person or remotely is required
- Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity to language, learning, and cultural barriers required
- Ability to work independently, proactively and productively required
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required
- Excellent organizational and problem solving skills required
- Excellent leadership and team building skills required
- A satisfactory employment record, including teaching record and attendance, is required.
